The train (tren) ride is very interesting. It was built by the old American Fruit Co (Dole) for coconuts. Then you go to the visitor's center which has decent bathroom facilities. You then get in a boat driven by a refuge guide. The red mangroves are hugh. You can see birds, howler monkeys and small bats. I also saw part... More

Don't miss this place if you are in the area. You'll be the only people there. Don't expect to see TOO much mammal wildlife - lots of birds, monkeys and bats. But the mangroves are some of the best I've seen. It's really beautiful and peaceful. The train was a hoot! Try to sit in the front on the way... More

Cuero y Salado is one of Honduras nature reserves worth visiting! Birds, monkeys, marine life and magnificent mangroves. To get there one needs to get into a small train for about 20 min. Later by boat the rivers Perla, Cuero and Salado are navigated. David was very nice when welcoming us at the entrance of the park and organized food... More

this is a great day trip: In La Union, west of La Ceiba you catch a train. It is about 30 min. to get to the visitors center on the side of the lagoon and just a short walk from the beach. From here you take a boat ride around a part of the lagoon. We saw a great variety... More

Ask Hondurans if they have visited this place, a few have, and a lot are not even sure where it is exactly. We opted not to do an organized tour, simply found out the Burra (small train) schedule, showed up at La Union, left our car at the departure center, and headed out not knowing exactly what we would find.... Our birding tour led by Robert Gallardo and William Orellana boarded the 2-car narrow gauge train for the short, colorful ride to the river bank near the park headquarters building (restrooms, some maps, explanations, and a few items to purchase). There we boarded two boats with experienced boatmen to take us upriver to see the specialties of the area. Among... More

There are two main ways to visit the reserve: by an organizaed tour, or by showing up individually. It is a lot cheaper to just show up (about $20-$30 instead of the $60 plus from an organized tour group), but be sure to know at least a few basic Spanish phrases to make sure that it'll be easier for you.... This wildlife refuge is not to be missed. Well protected mangrove nature, where you can see from motor launch boats birds, crocodiles, manatees (if you're lucky!) and other wild life. Don't forget to notice the plant life and flowers too! The local park-service guide was very knowledgeable about where the animals/birds are. Managed and well guided by a Honduran park... More
