The area is not fully excavated so one does not see a great deal of the old city. However, what is present is quite interesting. The grounds are used by families and worshipers on Sundays and I presume other days of the week. We had a great visit and recommend this site.

If you are passing through the capital on your way to one of the major tourist destinations like Lake Atitlan or Antigua, take a few hours and visit this site. It's not more than 45 minutes from the airport, but it dates back to 800 BC. Yes, BC people. It's one of the oldest Maya sites in Guatemala, and was inhabited for a thousand years. Most of the many pyramids are covered with grass, graceful trees picturesquely growing on top, but you can enter the "Acropolis" and see what the archeologists are excavating. If you're more into anthropology than archeology, you'll find that on many days local indigenous peoples conduct religious ceremonies at the site. (Note the flowers laid by some of the trees). A lot of the amazing finds from this site are at the National Museum of Archeology, close by to the airport.

This Maya ruins are close to the center, just 15 min. with a taxi. It is worthwhile seeing it. The ruins are not massively big, but you get a first impression of the culture, especially if you don't have time to travel through Guatemala! The one room museum is showing some artefacts. We were there on a Sunday. The park area was frequented by many locals. We saw some shaman doing their cultural rituals. That gave this location a very unique touch.

It’s a small place to see some exacted site and locals carrying out mayan ceremony. It is not worth the ticket price. Foreigners pay 10 times that of the local price. I wasn’t impressed with the area after having been to Tikal.

Kaminaljuyu (or KJ), is a very important ancient highland Classic Maya site. It is a must for whoever wants to understand the history of the city.

Kaminaljuyu is a Maya civilization site primarily occupied from 1500BC to AD1200. Archaeologist Michael Coe described this as one of the greatest of all archaeological sites in the Americas. What remains today, unfortunately, are a few mounds due mainly to real estate developments in the late 20th century. Archaeologist E.M. Shook first mapped scientifically the Kaminaljuy site over several decades from the 1930s (about when Torre del Reformador was constructed—1935). That mapping revealed some 200 pyramidal mounds and platforms. Kaminaljuyu’s known sites lie beneath the western third of modern Guatemala City. The area surrounding excavations is preserved as a park. Much of the ancient architecture was constructed of hardened adobe, more degradable than limestone used to build the Mayan cities in the Lowlands (Tikal, Copán, Yaxha). The park is a pleasant respite, but self-proclaimed shamans profane tradition by asking for money to witness religious performances.

This is an unknown but really important archaological site in the middle of not-such-a-great neighborhood in Guatemala City. They are actively uncovering Mayan ruins and have a small visitor's center describing their work. The grounds are also beautiful and often used for both Christian and Mayan ceremonies. Well worth a visit.

One of the most important archaeological sites of the Valley of Guatemala holding the deep past in its ancient constructions that once spread out around this area. The work at this site is important and the honoring of its long prehistory relevant to our world today.

What makes park really unique is that it is located inside the city limits and you don't have to travel far to get to it. A long time ago this park was not very well taken care of but now they have done a lot of great advances in making sure that it is per serving and that it is well taken care of. You can definitely see the archaeological finds here. Mayans to this day still celebrate and perform some of the rituals right in this park it is really an amazing thing to see and I am very glad that they are preserving it's natural beauty. This place is definitely a must see if you are into the history of the Mayan people

Because we knew about this site before we took our trip, it was on our bucket list because of its status as a very influential pre-classic site. I wish more objects where left in place in the little on site museum instead of having to travel to the Popo Vuhul Museum and others to see what was found there. I also wish there were more explanations available of how they build in the early time period of its settlement versus later. After being at Tikal it's a big step down, but understanding how much older it is would give a better perspective.
