Green Hills Butterfly Ranch is the premier Live Butterfly Exibit in Belize. Green Hills literally has thousands of live butterflies on display in a 4,000 square feet walk-in flight area. See the full metamorphosis from egg to adult butterfly. The photo opportunities are unlimited. The tour of the butterfly flight area and the Caterpillar Center takes about an hour. The facilities are surrounded by a botanical garden with more than 150 plants, shrubs and trees. There is a hummingbird viewing and photographic area where the average visitor can easily see a multitude of species. During the visit you are welcome to take advantage of the covered picnic area and clean restrooms. WiFi is freely available. Green Hills is worth a stop on your way to or from other popular destinations such as the Mountain Pine Ridge, Barton Creek, Caracol or the nearby villages of San Antonio and El Progresso. Oh wow! Oh WOW
We stopped in on our way to San Ignacio, planned for a walk around to stretch our legs, and go find the place we’re staying however we were so blown away by the hummingbirds, we stayed 3 hours and probably only left because it was closing time. We had some time a couple days later and came back! We’re pretty sure we saw 6-7 different hummingbirds and there were so many of them!

    Fun for all ages!
I’m glad we finally did this! Roni was an excellent guide. We learned so many fun facts. There were SO many butterflies and Roni provided a thorough and up-close education on the complete lifecycle of these amazing creatures. Come support this place and have a beautiful time with the butterflies AND hummingbirds!

Got lost on the way but worth finding our way to it!
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! our guide, Raina explained in depth how the ranch works, the various types of butterflies and answered all our questions very knowledgeably and thoroughly. Besides the many butterflies, they also have a hummingbird feeding station that will fascinate with dozens and dozens of the tiny shimmering creatures. Doesn’t look like much from the road, but believe me, it’s worth a visit.

Fascinating Experience, Much More Involved than Just Seeing Butterflies
This experience was so much more than other butterfly exhibits I have visited. Our guide at the Butterfly Ranch, Weslyn, was a passionate educator taking the time to share with us the life cycle of the various species. It’s a beautiful, fun and far more interesting experience than I had imagined. Thank you Weslyn and Stefany!

Roni is a "ROCK STAR" for the tour!!!
We visit friends that live in Belize and they took us to Green Hills. They close at 4pm and we got there at 3:40. I'm sure they would have preferred us to arrive sooner but you'd never know it by the way we were treated. Our tour guide was "Roni" and he was the best!!! Very unassuming, friendly, knowledgeable and extremely patient, we had lots of questions. I don't know any of the other guides but Roni is the man you want for the tour. Ask for him by name, he's a "ROCK STAR"!!!

A great stop for all who love butterflies
Well worth the visit to the butterfly ranch to see the wonderful conservation work they are doing, and to have the experience of having so many beautiful butterflies to observe. Cleydi was quite knowledgeable and took her time showing us around. Highly recommended!

    Butterfly extravaganza
Green Hills Butterfly Ranch was truly spectacular. Roni was our tour guide and he was very knowledgeable about the butterflies and answered our 138529 questions. I highly recommend coming to learn about native butterfly and hummingbird species in Belize as well as a chance to walk around and see some wild life. We rented a car and drove. It’s about 25 minutes outside of San Ignacio. It’s a bit hard to get there without a car or a ride because there is no bus route that goes that direction but if you Have the time and are willing to pay a little more for transportation it’s highly worth the visit

    Beautiful butterflies and hummingbirds!
This is such a cool place! Shanell gave us a great tour, explaining in the caterpillar house all the stages of raising these beautiful butterflies from eggs to adults. I was amazed to learn that they ship cocoons to butterfly houses all over the US and the UK! I especially liked the chance to just stay in the butterfly portion without being rushed, allowed to admire these delicate creatures. After the butterflies, it's a delight to watch the hummingbirds (we saw 8 kinds!) and walk around the property. We even saw a toucan fly overhead.

Stopped by in our rental car after Barton Cave tour and really enjoyed the tour by Erving and seeing the beautiful butterflies, as well as learning all about their life cycle. Ask about the trail cam photos of local wildlife on the preserve! So glad places like this exist to educate and help us appreciate how cool the natural world is- felt like our admission price was going to something very worthwhile and important. Never knew there were butterflies with TRANSPARENT wings!! Look closely at my “rock” photo- there is a butterfly there!

We were introduced to this place three years ago by a tour guide. We had such an awesome experience that we decided to visit it again during this year's visit and we were not disappointed at all. In fact it's even better! Sylvia our guide at the ranch was very knowledgeable and shared what and how they breed, raise and feed each species. To walk through the enclosure and have beautiful butterflies fluttering around you and to even have some land on you is absolutely amazing! The care and effort is very time consuming and requires lots of patience. On top of that the hummingbirds flying around the feeders were mesmerizing. There are trails on the grounds that go by greenhouses where they raise plants that the caterpillars feed on. Well worth a stop!

The Butterfly Farm is so interesting ! We were led by a very knowledgeable guide who really enhanced our experience. They have many areas devoted to lots of different kinds of Butterflies and you see them in all stages. It is clear that they are passionate about conservation. In addition, they have Hummingbird Feeders and we were able to sit and watch 7 different kinds feed. I would highly recommend a visit.

My husband and I stopped by when traveling from San Ignacio to Caye Caulker. The pirates at our San Ignacio hotel wanted to charge us $121 USD pp just to go back and forth from our hotel to the Butterfly Farm. We found a travel agency in San Ignacio that picked us up at our San Ignacio hotel and waited for us at Green Hills and then took us to the ferry in Belize City for $85 USD pp.
The butterfly tour was excellent and we stayed for a little over an hour. There are trails on the property and hummingbird feeders so could easily spend a few hours there but we had a ferry to catch. Highly recommend!

Darwin gave us the absolute best tour. He is very knowledgeable about plants, indigenous medicine, conservation, butterflies and effect of climate. He descends from a long line of medicine professionals and communicates clearly and engagingly.

Highly recommend both the butterfly exhibit and medicine trail tour.

The most unique thing I have ever done.

Informative, fascinating tour of the largest butterfly site in Belize. They ship live chrysalises all over! Our guide was very knowledgeable about the stages of metamorphosis, and pointed out tiny but significant details that show that a larva or pupa was ready to change into the next step. Beautiful grounds covered with flowers that invite both butterflies and hummingbirds. Inside the butterfly house, there are 13 varieties that are being cultivated. There was even a small pond with locally grown fish. When one of our party mentioned planting a local garden to attract butterflies and hummingbirds, our guide began handing him starts of various plants to take home. Definitely a place to soak in nature and enjoy the beauties of butterflies and hummingbirds!

Had a wonderful time at the Butterfly Ranch! If you’re canoeing at Barton Creek you MUST stop here. Our guide Rachel was very friendly and knowledgeable. She took us through the butterfly garden and pointed out many of the different species for us. We got to see all the stages they go through from egg to caterpillar to pupae to butterfly. These butterflies are very well cared for. The enclosure itself is beautiful and if you stand still, the butterflies will land on you.
Many hummingbirds also call this place home and we got to see many species. I’ve never seen so many hummingbirds at once! There were at least 30 in one area. We’d definitely go again!

Shanell gave us a wonder tour of the farm and was obviously extremely knowledgeable about the conservation work they do there. Much respect to her and her colleagues for helping this wonderful counties wildlife. And maybe some advice “sell the hummingbird experience more !” … 20 minutes of blissful birdwatching at the end of a wonderful couple of hours.

We have been to a number of butterfly museums in the US, but nothing compares to this! This was an unexpectedly wonderful experience. The species you see are native to the area. In the screened in space where the butterflies are, they use the specific plants that each species needs (plants are grown on property). They collect the eggs, manage the process through the development of the chrysalis. Some are allowed to released in the screened area, some are released outside and about 60% are are shipped all over the world. Reyna was our guide and does the hands-on management of several of the species. She is passionate and greatly added to our experience.

In addition to the butterflies, we saw 6 species of hummingbirds by the hundreds on feeders.

We almost didn't go, but are extremely glad we did.

I was a little skeptical of visiting a Butterfly Ranch, but my wife convinced me that the kids would like it. I probably enjoyed it more than the kids. Cleydi took us on a little tour and showed us various species that we would find there. The actual butterfly enclosure is amazing and if you stand still, lots of butterflies will land on you. When we were all done, we were able to sit in an area that had an astonishing number of hummingbirds that fly right next to you. All in all, a great experience.
