- Mike HSeattle, Washington21 contributionsGo to Barton Creek Cave!Mind blowing. Go! Easy tour in an amazing cave. Easy to navigate. Drove to cave. The drive was probably more challenging than the cave. About 2 miles from howay on a rustic road that has you driving across river bed 2x. Had a 2 wheel Jeep. We were fine. The cave is hige. Stalactites and Stalagmites that are enormous. Remnants of Mayan sacrificial ceremonies. Great guide at mine entrance. Meet a guy named Mike if you get the chance. Built much of the access roads. If ATM is too much, this place is quite easily traveled. Recommend both if you can. Stunning.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 November 2023
- Karla GColumbus, Ohio8 contributionsEven the teens liked itThis was a great trip for a family - our family of four includes two older teens who were impressed by the experience of canoeing into the cave (the younger one says “it was SWAG”). We took at tour arranged by our resort in San Ignacio, Cahal Pech, but we didn’t catch which company we went with. We enjoyed seeing the stalactites/stalagmites and the bats, but were amazed by the archeology. The stories and history told by our guide, Alex, were a high point! We swam in the pool outside the cave afterwards, and that was pleasant. There are restrooms on site where you can change out of wet clothes. If you don’t intend to swim, you don’t really need a swimsuit, but water sandals are a good idea. Plan on a half day for this trip.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 December 2023
- Ellie MCalgary, Canada84 contributionsUnderworldlyThe entrance road is very bumpy and you have to cross a stream so you might need a hired driver if your vehicle or confidence isn't up to it. Once there, you are rewarded by not many other visitors. The water in the cave is extremely slow moving but you have to canoe with a licensed guide because there are ancient artifacts and formations that need to be protected. Guides are available onsite if you didn't come with one. I found the information about Mayan beliefs in the underworld fascinating and the formations were spectacular. This is a slow and peaceful meditative experience that I really enjoyed - not intended for adrenaline seekers.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 February 2024
- Fasteddie100Ventura, California102 contributionsEducational and EnjoyableThis was a fun trip especially the ride in which we did with our guide from Chaa Creek Lodge. I would not do this in my own vehicle unless you have high clearance and some experience. The cave tour is by canoe and not a physical challenge. Try to get an early start to avoid the crowd and lights. Lots of interesting geologic formations and Mayan history. We had a fun half day.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 February 2024
- Julei KBelmont, California4 contributionsReview of Barton Creek from San IgnatioWe loved the Barton Breek Cove. Discovering the cave and swimming afterwards was perfect way to acclimatize ourselves to the environment. We had a very nice guide. Belize Family Adventure was great! The last 15 mins of the drive was rocky but well worth the drive there.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 April 2024
- garydennis501Phoenix, Arizona17 contributionsEasy paddle into a caveWe arrived just as they were cleaning. Carlos offered to stay and guide us into the cave. We were the only ones in the cave which made the experience that much better. The cave and artifacts are beautiful. Neat experience. Ask for Carlos.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 April 2024

Most people explore Barton Creek Cave by canoe, which takes them about 1 km into the cave. That's what I did at my first visit in 2016. For this time I booked the Extreme Tour, which takes you a lot further into the cave ... by canoe and on foot.
My guide Alex from Mike's Place provided a lot of interesting information along the trip. When we reached the point where the normal tour ends, it soon became clear why the tours end at that point. For the next part of the canoe trip we had to navigate below overhanging stalactites and I was lucky that the rain the previous days hadn't cause a rise of the water level in the cave as otherwise the tour would have to be cancelled.
After a while we reached a point where we left the canoe and continued on foot. We had to squeeze through very narrow passage, which were sometimes challenging for a 6'8" guy like me, but it was all manageable in the end. We also climbed up to the highest point of the cave, approx. 300 feet above water level and the returned for 10-15 min wade/swim though the water. The ground was extremely muddy at times causing us to sink into the ground. A few more narrow passages on foot and we were back at the canoe.
While we met a few other canoes when we were entering the cave, we had the place for ourselves on the return trip, which was great and very peaceful. After approx. three hours we were back into daylight. I can highly recommend this tour for everybody that it adventurous, but also fit enough to the climbs etc.

Amazing experience! We drove ourselves (requires 4WD) and I HIGHLY recommend you don't take El Progresso Road - which is the steepest road in Belize. We came in that way, and left via Upper Barton Creek Road which is MUCH better (although you do have to cross two rivers, not too high.) So we got to Mike's Place and a guide was waiting to take us. As he paddled in he told us great stories about the cave itself and the Mayan activity inside. he was a great guide! Note - if you are afraid of bats I would not take this tour, as the ceiling gets pretty low at the end and they whoosh by your head. But they never touch you. This was probably our greatest experience in Belize!

Was staying at a jungle camp and had booked this side trip. A man from the camp took us there, paddled the canoe and showed us the highlights. Well worth seeing. Travelled five years ago.

This is was such a special day for our family. We drove to the creek (highly recommend taking LOWER and not UPPER Barton creek road...it was not safe, even with a Jeep Patriot) and purchased a tour there at the creek. Our guide was great-taking nine of us in three canoes through the cave. We learned about what it was used for, and saw pottery and remains left behind THOUSANDS of years ago. Our daughters (age 5 and 7) also loved the tour. We considered taking a tour from our hotel but because we had a car, drove ourselves. It saved us a couple hundred dollars doing it this way.

Highly recommend Barton Creek Cave canoe tours. Go early and you can often be the only people in the cave and the experience is extraordinary. The formations are beautiful and to spend a few minutes in complete darkness you really feel the spirituality of the caves.

Drove up with no reservation, but they were very accommodating and we had a great canoeing and caving experience. Easy to do with kids, nice amount of time, cooler temps inside the cave, not to overwhelming or claustrophobic at all. Was glad we weren’t in the water and just got to canoe! Also had a really yummy lunch at the cabana type restaurant before heading out on some afternoon adventures (we saw the butterfly preserve and then went swimming at Big Rock) and the delicious homemade food sustained us!

You travel by canoe into a cave deep underground to see the various stalactites, stalagmites and pillars that have been created by water dripping through the limestone for millennia. It's a great way to stay out of the hot Belizean sun as it's very cool inside the cave. The Maya are said to have visited there.

Wanted to take in a cave tour while in the area and were not too impressed. We have visited many caves in different countries. Felt it was expensive for an hour long canoe tour through the cave. $65.00 US a person. We had a rental so drove ourselves. Took an hour from San Ignacio on the typical Belize no paved roads. The tour guide was very good at explaining the history and facts about the cave. The grounds of the cave area are beautiful and you can take in the greenery and flowers that are lush. Overall wasn’t impressed and would have maybe went to a different cave in the area.

We loved Mike's family and the entire staff at Mike's Place. Lilly, Elsa, Carlos, and Alex all took exceptional care of us. Part of our group did the extended cave tour with Alex and loved it. We were traveling with a toddler so a couple of us did the shorter cave tour with Carlos. Both groups had a great experience. Mike is a great host. He helped us with a day trip to Guatemala (which was also super fun). I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a jungle adventure. The setting is stunning and the people are so welcoming!

Considering doing the extended tour here in place of ATM. Anyone done both an have opinions?
My husband and I have done ATM, but our children are coming who have not experienced it. I know they could handle ATM, but is this more strenuous?

What should one wear? A swim suit or shorts and T? Are mosquitoes a problem?
Written 6 September 2019

The canoe ride is short, maybe 20 or 30 minutes
Our 3 year old could not do it (we think because it was so dark so we had to leave

I seam to get car sick easily when on tour van / buses, so we would be driving to the location. Is there parking available? You say we cross a river, I hope it isn’t the one pic the red truck is in. We are looking at this adventure for January 17th. What time do we have to be to your location? I saw some pricing in other posts, please confirm what options are available for tours as well as pricing? I saw mention of canoe, lunch, zip line, waterfall, is there atv, etc.?

You can easily drive here, There are two ways one is completely dry and the other is a river crossing , Currently the river is about 6 inch deep , this varies on and in rainy season . Coming from Georgeville the first entrance is river crossing and the second which is 2 miles further is a dry crossing , follow the signs . There is restaurant and Zip line a few hundred feet from cave entrance and a great fresh water swimming area in-front of the cave , climb the vines and dive in off rock cliffs ( ladder for non Tarzan and Jane's ) . Look to forward to seeing you here .Go to web site Bartoncreekcave for pricing and maps . Depending on activates you want you can come any time between 7 am and 4 pm.

If we drive to the cave site ourselves how much do you pay for the entrance, equipment and the guide that will take you into the cave? Just considering if it's worth driving there rather than joining a tour.
Written 7 September 2017
If you drive to the cave you will get a local guide who grew up here on site and will do a very special and different tour then the organized tours from town ... The price is 50 US each , the drive is good and a lot of fun ,, The roads are in better shape then they have been in years ,, If you would like a pickup we can do that for 65 US each from San Ignacio town and area , and you would still get local guide

Can we drive to this cave on our own and rent canoes there instead of taking an expensive tour for the whole experience? Here will be 8 of us and we already rented a large van to tour around Belize on our own
Written 4 September 2016
I was told at the cave that you are not allowed to enter the cave on your own. It’s really not worth going anyway. It’s boring.
