Breathtaking! I had a pretty serious injury on this trip so our planned hiking was cabashed. This was an easy walk from the parking lot to the lake. The bonus was - a Sunday afternoon local hockey game. Dog friendly. Kid friendly. A must see
Get there early! We parked in the garage and took the bus up to the Bells. We had a great bus driver who would stop for wildlife and photo ops! Once at the park, there are multiple paths for different skill levels! The view of...More
We survived the free bus trip to the interchange, then transferred to the next bus which was an informative experience, to find another natural wonder being loved to death by the migrating tourists from around the World, who ignore the signs and the fragile environment...More
We went to see this place the first week in October and were able to see the glowing aspens along with the scenic mountains. It even snowed a bit on top of the mountains. The road to get up to the Maroon Bells was magnificent...More
Headed to Maroon Bells to hike Pyramid Peak. We were lucky enough to score one of the camp sites so we were able to drive in instead of taking the bus. The walk to Maroon Lake is crowded with gawkers but the lake lives up...More
Unbelievable place to visit! So beautiful! Trails to walk on, short and long. If you ever visit the Aspen area, this place is a must see. Plus, you take a bus, so you can enjoy the scenery the entire way. Probably a 20 minute trip...More
It had been 20 years since we visited Aspen, and we enjoyed an early season overnight snow storm that was lifting from the valley the morning we visited the Bells. There were only two other people there, which was a treat, and the scenery was...More

Any time of year is great to visit the Maroon Bells. The Bells are majestic and magical. Chances are in mid October most of the fall colors will be gone. I suggest that you keep the Maroon Bells as a destination on your trip, you will not be disappointed. The roads should still be open in October as long as there is not heavy snowfall.
To double check if the roads are open visit the government Maroon Bells website.
Maroon Bells are open year-round but in the winter the only way in is by dogsled, horse, snowshoe or cross country ski. I believe from the gate the trek is over 8 miles.
