A Lovely and Historic Church at 16th St & M St NW
May 2019
A Lovely and Historic Church at 16th St & M St NW

In May, while my wife was in meetings on “The Hill,” I was walking much of 16th St NW, and came upon the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church, at 1518 M St NW (Corner of M St and 16th St NW). I must have passed it several times, and really paid little attention to the structure, but then the on this Spring evening, and the light was so nice, it caught my eye, so I explored it a bit. Unfortunately, the chapel was not open this evening, so I had to confine my exploration to the lovely exterior.

It was not until later that I learned a bit of the history of the Metropolitan A.M.E. church – several notable funerals were held in its chapel: Frederick Douglass, and Rosa Parks, for two. Now, I had noticed that the church was celebrating its 180th Anniversary, and that, in the USA, is significant.

The main building is done in a lovely example of Gothic Revival, popular in the 1880’s, and especially in the Nation’s Capital.

I plan to return, on our next trip to Washington, and do so on a day, when I can tour the interiors too.

Beautiful church

I happened upon this magnificent church as I was exploring the neighborhood.. it is a lovely spiritual sanctuary. I would have stayed longer, but they were getting the church ready for an evening event. The guard graciously let me go up to the sacristy and allowed me to take photos.
When I am again in DC, I will arrange for a tour of this church.

The District's iconic A.M.E. Church
Dec. 2017 • Couples
During our most recent visit to Washington, D.C., my wife and I visited Metropolitan A.M.E. on a Saturday morning. My wife's cousin is a long time member and gave us a great tour of the church.

The stained glass window featuring various A.M.E. Bishops is gorgeous and provides a special atmosphere to the main sanctuary. It was also touching to see the name plates attached to pews with the names of special members engraved on them. Two names that were of significance to me were Gwen Ifill and Frederick Douglass.

It was also a special time to visit the church since the Christmas decorations were up and a festive spirit was in the air. We were greeted very warmly by members as my wife's cousin took us around the church.

This is a church with a rich history that remains a vibrant center of the community it has served for so long.

Gorgeous landmark

I’ve been to DC numerous times and have hit the usual suspects: White House, Congress, Courts, Smithsonian, and more. I ended up on a long walk this morning and walked around the exterior of the MAMEC. What a gorgeous church. I did not get inside, but want to go back to take a tour.

179 Years and Going
Jul. 2017 • Solo
The Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church is about to celebrate 179 years of service to the community. This church is a living testament to the endurance of faith. I didn't go to a service, I visited while I was on the Capital Buddy Tour.

I was able to sit in the same seat as President Barack Obama, Gwen Ifill, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Frederick Douglass. It was nice to take a peek at the sanctuary and observe the architecture of the building.

Visited church on 1st Sunday in March. We were received warmly. The pastor welcomed us as well. Stain glass is wonderful. The sanctuary is adorned with items that depict black history month. Lots of history in the facility.
The pastor greeted us warmly as well and took a couple of photos with us after delivering a wonderful sermon. Parking is located next door. We enjoyed our visit.

Beautiful Landmark of DC

Because the Church was prepared for certain ceremony so I could only peaked inside. However, just the sight of the building from M street area was enough to give me a pride of having this wonderful building in the city. According to the history on site, the Church is the oldest AME Church is continue to be black-owned Church in the City. It was built in 1839 and was registered as a land mark historical building in 1973. Great looking building standing tall along all new glass buildings on M Street.

Wonderful experience, left feeling elevated

I visited MAMEC on July 3 2016 during my holiday. The church is very welcoming and you're greeted with a smile by many upon arrival. Although the service was longer than I'm used to you wouldn't realise as it such a great service filled with great music from the choir and guest singers, liturgy and some of the best preaching I've ever witnessed from Rev William Lamar. Regular worshippers were very welcoming when they realised I was from overseas. I would definitely return to MAMEC if I were to visit D.C again, I left feeling great and the worship really touched me; definitely one of the highlights of my holiday. Thank you MAMEC!
