Kind of hidden on 16th street but really worth a visit. And it's free. Mansion built in 1910 for the U.S. Treasury Secretary. It was long tome Mexican Embassy. Murals done by famous Mexican muralist Roberto Cueva in 1933. Various temporary exhibits that change regularly. Concerts occasionally. Now houses the Cultural section of the Mexican embassy. Open to public Monday to Friday 10 am to 6 pm and Saturdays during exhibitions from 12 to 4 pm.

Although I went for an evening musical performance, my favorite part of the visit was seeing the beautiful murals on the interior walls of the Cultural Institute. When you first enter, they will take your breath away. The walls were painted in the Diego Rivera style in 1930 and 1931 by a student of his that Rivera personally recommended to paint these murals. Cueva del Río's outstanding work is on a challenging "canvas" due to the many angles and surface size variations presented in this historic mansion. Staircase walls, the second floor landing, and other interesting places were painted, as are many broader expanses of room walls. Each space tells a piece of the cultural story. I look forward to visiting again to take the offered tour and to spend more time admiring the exquisite detail of this beautiful work. If you enjoy Diego Rivera's style of bright & beautiful colors depicting cultural activities, the del Rios murals in the Mexican Cultural Institute are not to be missed.
