The Smithsonian Institution has two museums of Asian art: the Freer Gallery of Art, which opened to the public in 1923, and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, which welcomed its first visitors in 1987. Together known as the Freer|Sackler, the museums are physically connected by an underground passageway and ideologically linked through the study, exhibition, and sheer love of Asian art. Please note: The Freer Gallery of Art will be closed to the public from January 2016 until summer 2017. The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Library, and Archives will remain open for the duration of the renovation.

This small gallery contains a lot of masterpieces. You'll have a lovely time exploring them all. Beautiful display space. Nice way to spend an hour or two.

The gallery is mostly underground so it is easy to miss in the gardens behinds the Smithsonian castle. Mainly Asian works with rotating exhibits. Great gift shop.

The entire Freer Gallery of Art is alwasy worth a visit, but the main attraction for is is the amazing James McNeill Whistler's Peacock Room. This whimsical treat is always a highlight.

There wasn't much to look at but the things that were there were quite interesting. The kids were not that impressed.

Touring the Smithsonian museums can become overwhelming in tourist seasons, because of the huge crowds. The Freer gallery has always been one of my favorite Smithsonian Museums. The Asian art is world class and the atmosphere is serene. As the crowds in D.C. have grown,...More

Have visited the Freer and Sackler galleries, both of which are impressive. They are much less crowded than the larger museums, but well worth visiting!!
