On a recent business trip to DC, I finally made my way to The Phillips Collection. I'd wanted to visit this museum on previous trips, but I'd missed it. It made for a wonderful morning of discovery! First of all, the collection is impressive, but completely do-able in a morning. I found my Zen in the Rothko room, admired Renoir's... More

Sometimes you bump across a private gallery where the collectors have assiduously squirrelled away their art, over generations and then it all comes to light in a public collection. Such was the amazing eclectic collection I found during one cocktail function hosted at The Phillips Collection. The collection was started by a family of Pittsburgh industrialists who simply could not... More

I went there and saw the "Boating Party". Even if its still not there this place was awesome! Find it, do it!

There were 2 African American Exhibits when we visited in late Oct. One was about the Great Migration when the Southern Black people moved up North. But I loved almost every painting in the entire Collection. One of the little known treasures in DC.

Fortunately for us my friend had read that the Renoir Boating Party painting was here, so after a very hot morning sightseeing we spent a delightful couple of hours wandering around this beautiful building looking at other art and then sitting in front of the Renoir - bliss! The walk from the museum to the metro is along some delightful... More

Located in nice neighborhood away from main tourist area, and charging for admission, Phillips is far less visited than Smithsonian properties (free and near each other along Mall). Small cafeteria available for coffee, soup or sandwiches.

Sunday afternoon concerts at this small museum has been a longstanding tradition. Many young artists from here and abroad make their Washington debut here. The music room is an elegant, intimate space. However, the sight line in the room leaves much to be desired. Neither the stage nor the seats are elevated, so very few people in the room can... More

The Phillips Collection is the right size to enjoy. In many galleries and museums, you are overwhelmed when you attempt to see all that they have, but that's not the case here. I also appreciated how the art was arranged thematically. You get a taste of how different eras and artists deal with major themes. Once again, this approach keeps... More

Of course we came to see Renoir's "Boating Party" but we timed our trip to DC to see the complete Jacob Lawrence "Migration Series." We only get to see half in NY at MOMA, so to see it whole, with the Phillips half was so moving. It was absolutely an art highlight of our lives. A lot of other great... More

Well, go any time to this wonderful small and easily digestible museum, but the Jacob Lawrence paintings are sublime - you must see them all together - which is a rarity.
