We enjoyed the portraits and sculptures of the Presidents. The rest of the gallery was okaaaay, but I've seen better. My husband was disappointed that the special exhibition of graphic arts mentioned in their brochure had closed. We were tired so we didn't go up to the third floor. I might be able to persuade him to go back.

So many things to see. Make sure that you see the very top floor that has more portraits that did not make it on the main floors - Jerry Seinfeld, etc. The presidents' portraits were great but I still did not understand the outliers of George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. They looked out of place. Check out Duane Hanson's... More

Visiting the National Portrait Gallery was my husbands idea, but I'm soooo glad we went! This place is amazing! I thought it would just be portraits from the presidents, but there are so many portraits there - from Queen Elizabeth I to Pocahontas to Elizabeth Cady Stanton and everyone you can think of. This was a surprise highlight of our... More

A fantastic collection of interesting works, covering a wide time period and all aspects of life, from politics to entertainment. My only observation that might put some people off, is that almost all the portraits are of people in American life. This is not a criticism (we are in America!) but as a European visitor, i was faced with a... More

If anyone wishes to get a visual knowledge of who created the US Constitution, Bill of Rights, fought in the Civil War and was instrumental in shaping America's history, then a visit to the National Portrait Gallery is an absolute MUST! Not knowing what to expect, we were totally enthralled by what we saw room after room, portrait after portrait,... More

We loved this museum. Off the Mall, so not as crowded. Could really explore and see some amazing pieces of art. My 12 yo loved it and really appreciated it. We could have stayed all day to really enjoy the art.

Truly exceptional gallery and facilities. I didn't allow enough time to view the exhibits - will definitely be going back (and allowing more time).

I dragged my eleven year old son to this with me and I'm so glad we did. There is something for everyone. While we didn't understand the history of media communications exhibit, we had fun playing with the falling letters in that section. The presidential portraits brought me to tears and my son kept saying, 'I saw that in my... More
