- Steph SBristol, United Kingdom94 contributionsIn AweOf course no visit to DC would be complete without a visit to see Lincoln, I went in the evening to see everything lit up and found less of a crowd but I was upset to see the iconic steps in front of Lincoln were having work done on them. So sadly I could not stand where Martin Luther king Jr stood when he delivered his iconic speech. However, it is still incredibly impressive to see and I have to say Americans know how to do a memorial as there are many other memorials in the vicinity that are also worth admiring. Definitely not to be missed if you’re in DC, I’d love to be able to live local and walk around the mall and the memorials whenever I pleased!Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 October 2023
- bag1234Atlanta, Georgia37 contributionsOur Visit at Night was INCREDIBLEWe went around 7 p.m. and it was the best part of our trip to DC. We could see the Washington Monument and The Capitol from the Lincoln Memorial. It was beautiful. We spent some time near the statute of President Lincoln.Visited October 2023Written 20 October 2023
- Whitney DRacine, Wisconsin100 contributionsAmazing Memorial to visit! My husband and I are big Lincoln fans so I knew he needed to see this memorial. I myself have seen this when I was much younger so now that I'm a bit older it was great to experience it again! Unfortunetly, the memorial was under construction so that was a bit disappointed but the statue and main area where Lincole sits was not. It wasn't too busy and it was fun to see people dancing on the stairs leading up to the memorial. Its such a great likeness of him with all of this famous quotes around him. They do have a little gift shop there but there is also another one with more things just a bit aways away which is where we found what we were looking for. This is a must see in DC!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 October 2023
- LisaMNUSASaint Paul, Minnesota1,120 contributionsWell worth visitingThe memorial is nice, you'll need to take some steps to get to it. The statue is very big, there is information about him and the history on the wall. You can see the Washington monument from here through refection pool. I visited here on a Tuesday afternoon, it wasn't crowed.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 27 October 2023
- SeamusOakville, Canada1,673 contributionsAwe InspiringEven for us Canucks, this edifice is not just impressive in size, but meaning for the histories of both our countries. After absorbing the magnificent statue we’ve seen in many films, take the time to reread the Gettysburg Address on the left of this simple space, and Lincoln’s second inaugural address on the right. Then step down the stairs in front to where Martin Luther King gave his “I have a dream speech,” and enjoy this vista over reflecting pond down the Washington Monument.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 December 2023
- Bea1,301 contributionsTruly spectacularIt is one of the most spectacular monuments we have ever seen. As the name suggests it is devoted to the 16th president of the USA, Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865 and two years later Congress incorporated the Lincoln Monument Association to build a memorial. The Lincoln Memorial stands on the National Mall. From the Lincoln Memorial you can have a wonderful view on the Washington Memorial and the reflecting pools. I would recommend visiting it in the evening, too. It looks really spectacular. All memorials in Washington are free of costs.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 December 2023
- Nicole Y5 contributionsLincoln Memorial: Timeless ReflectionsThe Lincoln Memorial is a powerful symbol of American history in the heart of Washington, D.C. The imposing statue of Abraham Lincoln and the serene Reflecting Pool create a solemn yet awe-inspiring atmosphere. - KayakgirlyLondon, United Kingdom359 contributionsA must-doAlways worth a visit when in DC. There’s construction underway so half the stairway leading up to the memorial is closed. This means that the place where Martin Luther King Jr gave his legendary speech is not currently able to be seen. I sincerely hope that when the construction is complete, that location is given the focus it deserves as previously it was lost.Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 5 January 2024
- Kevin BMount Juliet, Tennessee4,182 contributionsWonderful memorial! The Lincoln Memorial has always been my favorite memorial in D.C. and it's likely because Lincoln is one of my favorite presidents. It's a stunning tribute to him and it's a very thought-provoking place to be, even when it's absolutely crowded. The architecture of the building itself is gorgeous and that is only enhanced by the statue of Lincoln himself. My favorite way of seeing this is it lit up at night and the memory of that is one that I will keep with me forever. It's a beautiful memorial and one you should make sure to see once in your life.Visited May 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 23 January 2024
- Boyd JMaleny, Australia1,758 contributionsA Must See in Washington DCWe visited twice, once on our own in the day time and later, on a night time tour. Both times it was crowded (though less so at night). In the day time it was very crowded, and it is worth patiently navigating your way through the crowds to view this impressive monument up close and take in the speech inscribed in stone, and other information about the 16th President. (A little useful tip: underneath, there are public toilets - not always easy to find in US cities).Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 February 2024

The Lincoln memorial very much has the appearance of a colonnaded temple and also has the vast feeling of a cathedral. Our visit during the day was very busy and it was difficult to appreciate the architecture and the fact that it is a memorial. We returned during the evening where we able to enjoy this enduring symbol in spectacular lighting, definitely a better time to view if you can.

very nice views from all around the Memorial. I like to visit in late afternoon or early evening when the crowds have decreased. Very close to Memorial are the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial which is on north side of Reflecting Pool and Korean War Memorial which is on the south side of Reflecting Pool. Across the Independence Ave is the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial and along the west side of Tidal Basin is the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial then you will see the Jefferson Memorial.
NOTE: If you are calling a ride share car, pick up is on the south side of Lincoln Memorial where the taxis and buses pick up and drop off.

If you live in DC or are just visiting you must go to the Lincoln Monument, I go at least once a month just to center myself. The statue of Lincoln takes my breath away and I am always pleased to see that once inside the monument even the most boisterous visitors seem to be taken over by the serenity of President Lincoln and the meaning of the words etched on the walls. Of course the view from anywhere around the monument is amazing, but my favorite is sitting on the steps looking towards the Capitol.

If you are in Washington D.C you really should go see this memorial. Its amazing.Have seen it on TV many times and was not disappointed at all. We were there in February so the crowd was small so it was easy to see the statue, in summer I would go early. Then turn around and take a look over the reflecting pool to the Washington monument that's a great view. When you look at it there are a lot of stairs but there is an elevator if you have problems with stairs.

I loved the Lincoln Memorial and all the stories that go a long with it. I was on an African American History tour, so we heard stories from the architecture of the building, the meaning behind the words around the inside of the memorial, to the significance behind delivering the momentous I Have A Dream Speech at such an important location. I would’ve loved to see this monument at night which they say is a beautiful sight.

The history behind Lincoln Memorial is inspiring, the father of the American union receives his recognition in an awe-inspiring moment in the heart of DC. The Lincoln sculpture is perfect and really realistic. When I was there it was raining and dark but no lights were on what was difficult for us to read the inscriptions on the wall.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “I have a dream” speech monument, in the center of the stairs is really nice and represents the struggle of millions.

A must see if you are visiting DC. It is a very important part of American History.
If you are at the Memorial and look East you will have a view of washington Memorial and the reflective lake.
This is also where MLK gave his historic speach "I Have a Dream"
A must visit by night too

We tried to take our kids here last time we visited the area, but due to illness, we weren't able to see this monument. We are so glad we tried again and was able to see it this time. We loved this monument. The size is unreal and the work that went into making it is just amazing. We are glad that we stumbled upon the history of it near the bathrooms, otherwise we wouldn't have known about all the rich history. The size of the building overall is incredible. Although there were many people coming and going, we felt we were still able to stand and enjoy it and get good pictures.

My first visit to The Lincoln Memorial many years ago was during the day; however, a nighttime visit is a must.  It is amazing to see the memorial illuminated at night.  The Lincoln Memorial is an exquisite creation that pays homage to the president that saved the union.  In addition, there have been so many other defining moments that have taken place at The Lincoln Memorial such as Dr. Martin Luther’s King’s I Have a Dream speech given on August 28, 1963.  Visiting this monument definitely provides an opportunity to think about historical moments in time and how one man’s presidency helped to shape the United States of America.  The Lincoln Memorial is one of the most impressive monuments that you can visit at the National Mall.  I encourage everyone to visit.

The Lincoln Memorial is not only an important reminder of US history, it is also an esthetically uplifting experience. It offers one of the best views of the expanse of the Mall.
The Memorial can be visited within less than an hour, To take in the surroundings and getting there will take more time depending from where you start out. Thus, It is not as easy to get there as the other monuments but it is definitely worth it.

Where is the easiest parking to be able to walk and view all the monuments and Smithsonian?
Written 19 June 2019
Honestly, take the metro into town and get off at the Smithsonian stop. That places you roughly in the middle of the National Mall. They have a red bus called the DC circulator that you can ride for free and it will take you to all of the major stops. Or you can take a stroll around to see all of the monuments and museums.

Hi,
We will visit Washington this summer. How long did you take at each monument? We are staying close by so will probably start out really early to try and avoid the main crowds!
We have to be at the Capitol Building for 10:15 and would like to get Lincoln, Korean, Vietnam and Washington monuments seen before that. We hope to be at the White House (just to take a picture and not stop) for 8:00. Do you think that would be sufficient time? We will be on foot but are all fit and healthy!
Thank you!
Bev

My opinion is No, that's not enough time, 20 minutes at each place is like running from place to place without actually paying much attention to what is there. I suppose, depending on how you sightsee, you could run up to it look it over quick, run to the next Monument. But I like to take it all in, walk around, read the information that is posted. I can't imagine being able to read anything about each place you are seeing at the speed with which you want to go. So I guess it depends on what you want to get out of it. Do you want to just look at the pretty building and keep moving? If so, sure, you can see all these things in that time. If you want to get more out of the experience while learning about each place... .you will need to allocate more time. Enjoy your visit!

Is it possible to see all the major monuments in D.C. in one day?
Written 15 February 2018
It is. But D.C. is worth spending more time in. If you also want to visit some of the museums, you should plan for some days.
Enjoy your stay. It is a nice city. :)
