I learned much about the staircase by stopping at the visitor center. I also learned it is a monument of 1.9 million acres-did not see it all. Took 12 from Bryce Canyon intersection to Boulder, Utah. The road in several places was shear drop-off on...More

Taking Hwy 12 west from Bryce to Torrey was the best decision we ever made. It's a beautiful and relaxing drive-the condition of the road is excellent. The scenery is gorgeous. Lots of hiking opportunities.

We drove Hwy 12 from Moab to Bryce Canyon in one day. We stopped at Goblins Valley State Park, which was quite underwhelming after being in Canyonlands and Arches. We then had lunch and picked fruit in Capitol Reef National Park. As we started approaching...More

Parking is free, no entrance fees. A National Monument since 1996 but a remarkable treasure. Not for the faint-hearted but totally inspiring. None of the facilities of a National Park but if you like some peace this is the place to visit. It is huge,...More

After the crowds of Arches NP, we certainly welcomed the more relaxed pace of this place. There are many choices for activities; you can hike on your own, you can sign up for a tour, you can just drive through it on Scenic Byway 12...More

This was the hike my 8 year old said was his favorite of the entire two week park trip. It's a super easy hike for moderately fit people. We saw a lot of unfit people or those who rely on canes quickly abandon the hike...More

Driving Highway 12 in Utah through a portion of the Grand Staircase Escalante is unforgettable. Geology is alive, all-encompassing, and we were enveloped by astounding beauty of colors in their expanse. History is alive here, as well. This is a must to see and feel.

Unique geology and interesting history. Pretty far off the beaten path. Be aware that the visitor center closes rather early at 4:30pm The restrooms are still accessible. The visitor center was rather trashy and unkempt when we were there.

Driving through the steep canyon walls along the Burr Trail was really something. At the beginning of the driving trail in mid-May is magnificent greenery with the gorgeous background. See photos. This long scenic road is just one part of the national monument. It's all...More

Hello! The actual top step of the Grand Staircase is at Bryce and the monument is 1.9 million acres, so it surrounds Bryce. I think you might be asking where the closest access with a Visitor Center is? That would be 20... More

Hi, Scenic Highway 12 is the only east/west paved road through that part of Utah, so if you start at Bryce, you are going east about a 2 hour drive to get to BLM Spooky/Peekaboo trails. Then, you would have to backtrack... More
