Drove the road to the dam...spectacular scenery...only a few towns on the way but as you approach the dam the cliffs rising from the green hued water against the blue sky is not to be missed...we wondered what it would be like to come in the late spring to see the numerous streams running down the almost vertical cliffs. We... More

This is a must! Someone said can't do in a day-nonsense I went to from Baker City to Hells Canyon, back to route 39, up to Joseph, and back to Baker City in a easy day. Someone else said it was frightening, not true easy drive. I have done a lot of the great ones out west, and trust me,this is one not to... More

We did this drive in one day from Baker City and back. Too much for one day, I would recommend doing it in 2-3 days. The Hells Canyon Overlook was a scary drive for me but the view was gorgeous! For National forest service roads they were all paved and well maintained! Our kids got kind of bored though.

The part I loved best was along NF 39 and the overlook. Really beautiful and hair raising driving. But really, all of it was excellent!

I've heard about the beauty and power of Hells Canyon for years and on our drive from Mcall, ID to Walla Walla, WA we decided to make a detour. We found it very confusing to figure out how to get there/what we'd see since OR, WA and ID tourist bureaus are all pushing their routes and TripAdvisor has multiple "Where... More

Spectacular views- at the end of the scenic drive - downstream from the dam enjoy water tours on speed boats or do some white water or kayak .. Start north in Lewiston ( after Lewis & Clark ) and drive south - only about 140 miles - but will take you 5 hours of hills ,mtns, switch backs , open... More

We travelled in from the Idaho side on a cold ,wet September day. This road is not one to lose your concentration on, it is twisty, very steep in places with no barrier. It is however an extremely beautiful drive in any conditions. You get varying views of the river as the road rises high above and then drops to... More

A smokey visit. The Oregon scenic byway was a pretty picturesque winding mountain road but smoke limited the visibility at viewpoints I feel like the area would be better seen from the Idaho side at river level road or on the river itself by either motorized boat or kayaks/rafts

This was getting to the end of our tour of Oregon and we were surprised again of the beauty of the State. We had planned to do it in a day, but not a chance. With plenty of overviews we took two days and it was well worth the effort. So much to see.

It's hard to describe the beauty - the sheer canyon walls, the deep green water above the dam and the river below. Try to capture the depth and height of what you see with a camera - it doesn't work. Take time to enjoy the view with your eyes only! Along the way were some wild peach and possibly wild... More
