So, I have both observations from a coworker who really did not enjoy flogging a rental car down this road, and my own personal experience astride a sportbike. 1) It's 150 miles of TURNS. Many of them are tight, and there's a section in the...More

If you have some car handling skills, a little bit awareness, and some common sense, this road could possibly be the best drive you'll ever go on. Is it a straight city highway? Absolutely not! You shouldn't expect it to be! Highway 299 is wider...More

This road was one of the scariest drives I have ever been on. Four hours of pure hell. I asked at a gas station if 299 or 36 was better to take from Redding to Eureka, he said 299 had slides, but 36 was a...More

About 4 hours long, no guard rails, cell service, chp, or civilization. If you are looking to live on the edge take this road. Especially if its raining & snowing. With the 101 closed you get 2 options to go to northern CA. 299 or...More

I took this road because Hwy 101 was closed due to mudslide. It was whindy, dark, rainy and snow in April!!! To make matters even worse, I had a tyre puncture. There are no major places to stop. If you are not looking for a...More

The short answer is "Yes", but be very cautious. I did see large trucks on the road but where the road is being repaired it narrows down to one lane with no straights. Good luck!
