Being a dream of mine to ride the train from Coast to Coast this experience was high on my bucket list. Upon boarding the train I was met by friendly and professional Porters. I was shown to my Roomette (small sleeping space) and was able...More
My 10 year old granddaughter and I traveled Thanksgiving week 2018 from Chicago to San Francisco. Prior to boarding, we enjoyed a couple hours in the First Class Lounge in the beautifully renovated Chicago Union Station. Hot coffee, tea, sodas, breakfast offerings, fresh veggies and...More
Were hoping for snow when we made reservations...but still a really nice trip. Cars are roomy with leg space, I'm 6', no problem like on air lines. Nice ride through the Sierras. The scenic car and dining cars were never crowded and the snack bar...More
My husband and I (newly retired):)... were going to visit my daughter in Sacramento. My husband decided he would like to take a train part of the trip to see the Rockies. Initially we looked at Denver to Sac, but that was in the range...More
Very nice train, lovely sights to see, I went to lunch with my family, and went back into my cart and some of my items are gone. That cart care taker told us on the way down, to make sure the electronics are away and...More

If you're used to 4-star hotels and crisp uniforms I'd say unless you're up for 'adventure' you might be disappointed after seeing the marketing. The people who work on the train are great. The tracks on some of the 'tours' are horrific. I was [seriously]...More
My wife and i did this trip last year. The scenery is amazing no doubt about that. Especially the trip over the mountains.
The reality with the rest of this trip was that it was quite poor. The cleanliness of the cars was ridiculously poor....More

The two best scenic areas are in the Sierras and in the Rockies, The Zephyr is timed such that when traveling in either direction, that you are scheduled to pass through both these two areas in daylight. The keyword here is "scheduled" as the Zephyr can be delayed and run behind schedule by hours, however traveling in May or June with the longer days and daylight savings time in effect, you have a good chance of viewing the best areas in either direction in daylight. I've been Chicago - San Fran twice and San Fran - Chicago once and didn't notice much difference in either direction.

The times I have been through Truckee, there hasn't been enough time to step off the train. Sometimes when the train is early at stations like Truckee, which is not often, you may have time to get off but I never have. As best I can recall, the only station between Salt Lake and Emeryville that there is an actual stop where you can get is off for a bit and stretch has been Reno.
