This place offers a fantastic scenic drive! You can spend a few hours driving in it for some far-west feeling. The Kelso dunes are fantastic and the lava beds offer a somehow original hiking experience.

Good old Google Maps took me straight through here for Las Vegas to Palm Springs drive. The Kelso Dunes were amazing and this is a real desert! 2050

I cannot help you. Only been once. And only to Hole in the Wall. Which takes time given the unpaved roads.
