The Mojave National Preserve sits about an hour outside of Vegas and offers some great sights if you want to break up your trip a bit, all you need is a rental car. I started with a trip to Baker, then dipped into the preserve, with a dry salt lake off to your right, and Cinder cones on your left,... More

My husband and I did a desert road trip and checked out Mojave in between visits to Joshua Tree and Death Valley and agreed that Mojave was the best. We went in February, so wildflowers were not yet in bloom, but there were other things to look at - plants, animals, rock formations, dunes and distant hills. The Kelso Depot... More

We were heading to LA and would have gotten there at the height of rush hour so decided to see real country instead. So glad we stopped. We took the road less traveled and saw wonderful sights. So glad it's March and not July as the temperature was bearable. The park has amazing views around every bend. Saw wildlife and... More

Wow. Such views. Quiet. Great campground. Loved the lava tubes and ring loop hike. I also station is a step back in time.

It is a sort of lonely drive through the reserve, but the area around Cima is loaded with Joshua Trees, and the stop at Kelso is a nice bathroom break. It should have food however. The views are long across desert, which can be nice if new to you.

The views of the night sky were absolutely stunning. Even being 100s of miles away from LV and LA you could see the light radiating in the sky just because there weren't any other light sources around you.

with a 15 passenger van with youth school group headed to Joshua Tree. We stopped at Kelso Depot Visitor center. Excellent place for train watching and the restored depot is interesting. Good bathroom stop and has an outdoor picnic area. It appeared to have food indoors, but it wasn't open when we were there. Friendly rangers and average exhibits. The... More

We drove through on our way to Joshua Tree. It was the middle of winter, so mind you it wasn't the most exciting time of the year. Also the road to 'Hole in the wall' Trail and ring hoop look out point was very rough due to seasonal conditions. Cool to see, but don't make a special trip out.

Beautiful dark night sky, crisp cold night air with a wood camp fire. Hiking during the day we were usually alone, occasionally one or two other cars indicating another's presence. Kelso dunes, kelso depot, hole in the wall canyons were awesome. Was not able to see the lava tube because we didn't feel comfortable in our Chevy equinox awd to... More

The Mojave National Preserve is much under rated. A lot of people will say there is nothing there but in fact it's filled with geologic wonders and natural wonders. On my way back to Las Vegas my adventurous spirit kicked in. I exited Cima Road headed to Kelso and exited at the Kebalker road toward highway 40. Beware there are... More
