I especially enjoyed the Saguaro cactuses they are everywhere and so big and old. Read about them too they are amazing!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 November 2023
- GalSherry133 contributionsThe mountain isn't the only thing memorable about this placeI received a ticket from the library through the Culture Pass program for the Superstition Mountain Museum. Honestly got more out of the free part of Superstition Mountain itself. The hike and the "town" was interesting to see. Being able to go into the church, see Wells Fargo, jail etc and see photos/posters of all the actors who have made movies there, was unique. Never knew so many movies had been made there. Most.of what you see online about the place has to do with how Superstition Mtn got its name but not that the place has so much more history. I think the stamping machine still being used (can be seen at certain days a week) made me realize that the Mountain isn't the only thing memorable about the place. Make sure to keep hydrated if you hike it. Definitely bring a camera because the area is gorgeous.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 13 November 2023
- Ry MIowa City, Iowa2 contributionsGreat challenging mountain but have to be carefulI love this mountain but it can be dangerous if going during bad weather. My wife and I go about every other year and it’s a good challenge for us, we’re in our late 20s. I tried beating bad weather once, got lost and then the bad weather hit, this map is our path after realizing we were lost at the top of the mountain and couldn’t find a safe way down. Only ended up in a helicopter ride back down.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 February 2024

We’d been looking forward to hiking in the Superstitions on a recent trip to Phoenix, but the trails were beyond our expectations. Dramatic vistas with rocky backgrounds and saguaros. We hiked the Peralta trail and stopped at the Fremont Saddle. Spectacular views. Petroglyphs at the canyon on the Heiroglyph trail did not disappoint. So many more trails, we hope to go back to the Phoenix area for this.

The Superstition Mountains look more impressive the closer you get as you hike. The view from the road or parking lot do not do it Justice! The hike is not challenging until the last 25% of it. Make sure it is dry when you go. It was sprinkling out which made it very slippery on the steep rocks at the top.

My husband and I took our Jeep to Superstition Mountains. We took the Apache Trail and it took us 6 hours round trip with photo stops and a lunch break at a park near the water. There were places where we could take the Jeep off the road. The last mile or so was on an unpaved road so it was quite bumpy but we had a fantastic day! A lot of people had Jeeps especially at the last overlook.

What an interesting and beautiful area! You can see Superstition Mountain for miles as you approach. It stands high and ragged above the undulating desert surrounding it. There is a small fee to enter and park. Parking was spaced for social distancing. There are bathrooms that are exceptionally clean. The woman responsible for that should be commended. I thanked her in person as a clean public restroom is so appreciated. The area is dotted with picnic tables, some covered providing shade, some not. Some are right up close to where you'd park some are a few dozen yards in. There are many trails that crisscross through the terrain, some shorter some harder. Some with informative signage referencing the flora or animals in the area. There is one trail, at least, that offers benches along it for resting. My 80+ yr. old parents had no difficulty handling the shorter trails. I use Alltrails.com for trail info. Be sure to wear a hat and sunscreen, unless your at a covered picnic table there is no shade. Nearby there is a rock and mineral shop, horse stables, and old western style town with what they call a zip line. (Not recommending that!) But the town is cute.

With the rough terrain and vertical slopes, the area is a hikers and mountain climbers haven. The scenery is spectacular.

We hiked many of the major spots in Phoenix on our vacation, including Piestewa Peak, North Mountain/Shaw Butte, Lookout Mountain, South Mountain Park, and we attempted to hike Camelback, but were unable to due to the shear volume of people and cars. By far, our favorite hike was the Peralta Trail to Fremont Saddle in the Superstition Mountains. It is a little further drive, located just east of Phoenix, but the drive is so worth it! The round trip from the trailhead to Fremont Saddle and back is just over 5 miles, and there is a climb (I think the elevation change was somewhere around 1300 feet). The rock formations in the Superstition Mountains are very unique with changing colors. There is more vegetation found along this trail when compared with much of the desert landscape in Phoenix, and the contrasting colors of the vegetation and the rocks is gorgeous. At the top of Fremont Saddle, the view overlooks Weavers Needle and the mountains beyond. The trail had fairly steady foot traffic, but there was plenty of parking (on the Sunday in January that we visited). It was much less busy than Camelback and Piestewa Peak, and in my opinion the views and scenery were just as spectacular if not more so than these more commonly visited locations. If you're looking for a scenic hike in the Phoenix area, put the Superstition Mountains and the Peralta trail at the top of your list!

Enjoy the scenery and stop off at the Lost Dutchman's Ghost town for lost of fun things to do. Along the drive you can drive through the mountains over to Canyon Lake, Tortilla Flat, Roosevelt Lake and dam. Very nice getaway in the heat of the valley summer. A great place to go on a motorcycle ride.

My wife and have one day to hike in the Superstition Mountains. What hike would your recommend, we have about 6 hours of time.
Thanks
Written 19 January 2018
Massacre ground trail or peralta trail.
Both moderate picturesque shorter than 6 hour trails.

Trying to get a little more clarification on time/distance/difficulty/recommendations...going to be in Phoenix area, want a difficult day hike. I am an experienced hiker, so wondering how much of the La Barge Boulder Canyon Loop Trail can be completed in a full day vs doing the Boulder Canyon trail...or do you start at the same and can decide as you go? Thanks!!

Don't bother with that hike. Do the Siphon Draw trail up the northwest side all the way to the Flatiron and then take a left all the way to the top. If you are in real good shape, you can be up and down in four hours. But for most hikers, count on six hours total.

According to George Johnston, president emeritus of the Superstition Mountain Museum, the mountain was called many different names, by a handful of different cultures, over the years. "The Crooked Top Mountain,” “Thunder Mountain,” and "Mountain of Foam,” are a few examples. But it was the local farmers, in the late 1860s, who tabbed this mountain with its final namesake.
Through the Pima Indians, the farmers of the Salt River Valley had heard stories about “strange sounds, people who disappeared, mysterious deaths, and an overall fear of the mountain.” Johnston said.
This influenced the farmers to believe the Pimas were superstitious about this particular mountain, and thus the name Superstition Mountain was born.
