Traveling south from Florence, you will gradually see the terrain change from dry low desert to high scrubland. Beautiful vistas of the desert and sky-islands in the distance. Interesting cacti such as saguaro, organ pipe and cholla. Memorial at the spot on the road where actor Tom Mix died in a car accident in 1940. East end entrance to Park... More

Instead of driving on boring I-10, take this former main route (Rt. 179) through the tranquil desert. It goes near Casa Grande Ruins NP, worth a visit. Stop at the touching Tom Mix memorial, with a nice picnic area adjacent. It goes through the small old town of Florence as well. The lack of billboards and much civilization is refreshing.

Taking this road since the '50s before I-10 was completed. Now I do an annual bike ride to Tucson on this road. Much more lush landscape than I-10 and places to stop along route like the Tom Mix memorial, the amazing Greek Orthodox compound south of Florence, and Florence an amazing historical town along with the jails.

The landscape of wild desert plants on a 17-mile stretch of Arizona Highway 79 is out of this world. If you’re a devotee of desert gardens, this stretch of highway known at the Pinal Pioneer Parkway is not to be missed. I stopped often to view the cholla, barrel cacti, prickly pears and saquaros that grow wild in nature’s garden... More
