Stunning views! Beautiful drive from Haines town (USA) to Haines Junction Canada. Possibly a short wait at the border depending on the time of day. This border does close at night so watch your timing. Just before you reach Haines Junction, stop at Dezadeash Lake for pictures-look for eagles! The highway also passes the border of Kluane National Park which is joined with Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Have a full tank of gas and food and water.

During our cruise stop at Haines, we rented a car at Haines, drove to Chilkoot Lake, to the Bald Eagle Preserve, past the border to Tatshenshine-Alsek Park in BC, and finally to the Million Dollar Falls in the Yukon. The entire route was spectacular, but the British Columbia section was eye-poppingly so. There was stops along the way where you can enjoy the scenery. The Million Dollar (Takhanne) Falls was a worthwhile stop; the kids loved it. We were pleasantly surprised at how good the road conditions are for a relatively remote location. Another bonus: Traffic was very light. At times, we felt like we had all this grandeur to ourselves. This is so rare in this increasingly busy world.

We live in Haines, Alaska and travel the Haines Highway very often. It runs from the Haines ship dock (mile zero) to Haines Jct. Yukon. It is 160 long and was built as a spur of the Alaska Highway. The first 40 miles are in Alaska. When you cross over into British Columbia you start up a 15 mile mountain. Be sure to stop at Million Dollar Falls if you take this drive. It is a beautiful waterfall with a nice boardwalk. It is a must detour as you travel the Al-Can Highway.

I grew up 26 miles outside of Haines, right off the Haines Highway, and I gotta say I did take it for granted. Looking back on everytime I took the school bus to and from, the things I saw I would gladly pay money for today. To drive through the Bald Eagle Preserve everyday at least once, I never thought twice about an eagle. Now, when I see am eagle, it's a big deal, and I remember seeing hundreds each day. The drive from Haines to Haines Junction is a nice drive, minimal traffic if any, lots of mountains, big sky, perhaps a far off glacier, and maybe even some grizzly bears, eagles, an occasional moose, and if you stopped and looked in the water too, you'd probably see a salmon or too. It sounds so stereotypical, but its true. Don't take it for granted.

I spent three nights on the Alaska Marine Highway marvelling at the beautiful scenery of the coast of British Columbia and Alaska. The Haines Hwy in Alaska is beautiful as expected but a few miles into BC I couldn't stop saying WOW. The magnificent mountains towering over me and my motorcycle gave me shivers. After several miles I felt that I must be the only person on this beautiful road. The pavement was perfect and the road gently rolls through the valley of the famously beautiful Canadian Rockies. I travelled 10,000 miles on my motorcycle looking for beautiful roads and there is a long list of them but this road fills my dreams at night.

Arrived at the U.S. Border Crossing just before Haines, Ak approx July 5/14. Gave the gentleman my passport and relative paperwork showing permission to have a rifle in my motor home. Received this paper work from Bureau of Firearms in Washington D.C. Had planned on not using the weapon at all, but for protection from possible critters because we were planning to camp in some remote areas. (I never did take the rifle out of its' storage area). The border guard (Buchannan?) was very rude. He stated that the paperwork Washington had sent to me was wrong. I asked him "what do you want me to do?" He then took our passports and paperwork to my brother in laws' camper who was behind mine in the line up. He continued to tell him that our paperwork was wrong and that Washington was wrong. He at no time asked to see our rifles or search our vehicles. If he was so upset about us having rifles, why didn't he ask to see them? He then stated that he would let us through "this time" but to never come to his crossing again with a weapon. We had previously passed through U. S. customs near Chicken, Ak. with absolutely no problems from the guards. After visiting Haines, we again passed through another U.S. border with no problems. What is bothering the fellow at the Haines crossing? He is a representative of his country. A sour taste was left with us after this experience. We heard from other tourists who had also run into this fellow at "his" crossing and were also given a hard time. We did everything the proper way. Why was he the only one with an "attitude"?

I have driven all over the United States and Canada many times over in my 48 years, first with my father as a kid and now with my own family every summer. If I have the chance to fly or drive, I'm driving because I want to see the country. I try to drive to and thru places that I have never seen before trying not to drive the same route twice. In the summer of 2012 during one of our driveabouts, I had the opportunity to drive the Haines Highway to Haines, AK. Having driven into most national parks throughout North America, this was one of the most majestic drives I have ever had the pleasure of making. I drove north to south but it was so beautiful, I may do it again one day south to north! Put this drive on your bucket list.

This road stretches 152 miles from Haines Junction in the Yukon to Haines, Alaska. The views are magnificent. We saw bears and other wildlife along the side of the road so keep your eyes open. As the road rises in British Columbia you will be surrounded by snow and frozen lakes. Make sure you stop at Kathleen Lake just outside of Haines Junction, the Klukshu fishing village and the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve just outside of Haines. Although, you could make the drive in three hours…what a mistake that would be! Take your time, stop often and see the sights.

We rented a car after getting off the cruise boat and drove toward the Canadian border. It’s such a smooth drive and often times we were the only ones on the road. The scenery is simply unmatched. Go across the border and you’ll get an even more beautiful view.
