- MD72017Brisbane, Australia19 contributionsVery Enjoyable Wine TastingA friend of ours who lives in Auckland recommended a visit to the Waiheke Island and time permitting a wine tasting at this or another nearby Estate. We were delighted with the views, wine and food experience enhanced by our host Wendy who has a wealth of knowledge of the vineyard and the wInes produced. To complete the tasting I also sampled a craft stout beer which was particularly good. We spent 90 minutes here and it was a relaxing and enjoyable experience.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 October 2023
- JacDinnanAuckland, New Zealand14 contributionsCheapest way to get here. You can get here by bus and ferry. Simply get yourself a Auckland Transport Hop card from the ferry terminal, and load on enough for the ferry return $55 and $6-$10 for the bus dependent on if you’re making extra stops. You don’t have to pay the expensive bus tours or taxis. BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL at this winery as it’s very popular and beautiful. Allow lots of time for the ferry in the summer months!Thank you for sharing these valuable travel tips and insights for visiting Waiheke Island and Tantalus Estate. The bus is an excellent option with a stop right that can drop guests at the gates of the Estate. Also, your advice on booking in advance is much appreciated. We do recommend reservations, particularly in our busy spring and summer seasons, to avoid disappointment. We want to ensure all our guests have the opportunity to experience the beauty of our Estate and have a pleasurable experience. We also acknowledge your suggestion to plan for potential delays during the summer months particularly when it comes to ferry travel. Your contribution will undoubtedly assist future guests in planning their visit. We hope to welcome you back soon!Written 8 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 October 2023
- HolidayGalVictoria, Canada17 contributionsGreat place to taste aged red wines. We split the $30.00 wine tasting, featuring their aged red wines. The server also gave us an extra Chardonnay tasting which was a nice surprise. Excellent wines, but way overpriced. We didn't eat at the restaurant but it is stunning - first class.Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed our wine tasting and that the additional Chardonnay tasting was a pleasant surprise for you. We strive to provide a memorable and premium experience for our guests, both in our wines and our culinary offerings. We do hope to welcome you back and hopefully, next visit you can join us in the restaurant. We would love to host you again.Written 8 January 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 January 2024
- Simone CileaWaiheke Island, New Zealand10 contributionsA culinary gem on the islandWe've visited Tantalus several times over the past few months, and it has consistently exceeded our expectations. The service is incredibly attentive, professional, and elegant. The food is simply exquisite – kudos to the chef! It's my top choice on the island when I want to impress visiting family and friends or celebrate special occasions. We'll definitely be returning again and again.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 23 July 2024

Absolutely loved the wines and the service during our tasting was phenomenal. We paid for the tasting and decided to sit in the fabulous garden with a glass each (there were 4 of us) while working out which bottle we’d buy - this was $89 alone. After 3 x snacks we were looking at an additional $50 - the food was lovely. After a lovely drink in the garden we’d decided to purchase the Syrah to take away which was $90 and I was under the impression the tasting fee was taken off if we purchased only to be told by a not so polite staff member that it was ‘not how we do it here.’ Lovely place but to be honest, I wouldn’t go back for that reason alone. Paying for tasting is one thing but when you purchase off the tasting and they still charge, that’s crazy!

Three of us visited here on a Thursday for a late lunch and wine tasting. Our lunch in the Alibi Brewery Restaurant was very good. We shared the broccolini and fava bean dish and a 3 Cheese plate. The portion sizes of both dishes were ample for 3 people sharing. The flavor of the broccolini and green beans with dressing was excellent. The three cheeses were well sized and the taste and texture went well together. The delightful meal was made even better by a glass of estate Rose or Pinot Gris. The total cost of NZ$108 was well worth it. We followed up the lunch with a three wine selection wine tasting. The tasting was held with the three of us at one table. The cost of $15 for the three good wines and the explanation was good value

This was our third stop on the winery tour after Wild on Waiheke and Stonyridge. All three were very different. With a family or friends looking to play some games, Wild is nice – though reserve ahead and prepare for not the friendliest service on the island. At Stonyridge, the vide is more hip – nice deck overlooking the vineyard and some great reds to taste. We were tempted but glad we waited to eat until we got to Tantalus – recommend the cozy and casual bar downstairs unless you are looking for a longer and more glamorous lunch upstairs. The food and service were great whether inside the cave or out on the small covered patio.

Recently my BF and I stopped here for lunch and wine tasting as part of a wine tour. The restaurant decor was stunning as was the vineyard views. The food was also very nice but what I found disappointing was that the lunch choice was restricted to a 2 course or more with a starting cost of $70. In addition the desert course took so long to arrive we had to ask for a takeaway dish to take it. Perhaps some one course options should be considered?

I dream of the wine and spectacular food that is not only delicious but visually stunning. My partner and I spent a week on Waiheke and found ourselves back at Tantalus Estate multiple times. The staff were wonderful, helpful and incredibly knowledgeable too. We loved exploring the wetlands boardwalk, relaxing outdoors and even grabbing a pint at the brewery downstairs - it all just adds to the whole experience. This is a must winery stop when you are on the island - highly recommend making a reservation tho!

Very cool place providing a home to a micro brewery underneath the restaurant and wine tasting area, I loved the ambience - fabulous light fittings, good wine and warm and welcoming surroundings. I really loved this place. I think one should spend the day here! Lovely gardens, views of the vines and a great atmosphere.

We visited three wineries on our Waiheke visit and this was the pick of them. We had a tasting and the woman guiding us through the five wines was knowledgeable and very friendly. These wines are very expensive comparatively but the added bonus of a beautiful walk through native bush lessened the blow on the credit card. We purchased a Chardonnay but could’ve happily bought all five had the budget allowed it!

This was our second stop on Waiheke Island and it was recommended because the Alibi brewery on the Tantalus Estate do a paddle of beers for tasting. The waitress was very helpful with our choice of beers, and we sat and looked at the beautiful views over the winery.
We then decided to have a pint of beer and I had the old-fashioned lemonade, which was very refreshing. So then we decided we ought to have some food to go with this- a plate of buffalo wings, and some smoked fish croquettes - just right. We didn't order the fries as we could see the bowls of fries were huge! It was a very relaxing lunch, and we didn't feel rushed even though more people were coming in, they just found them all places to sit. The bathroom was very interesting too! The room was made completely of wood, and the sink of metal.
I would definitely make another visit here if I was to go back over to Waiheke Island in the future.

Tuscany vibes await at Tantalus Estate with a world class setting to rival any wine region in the world. The buildings are stunning, mixing stone, glass and wood to sit amongst the vines and rollings hills. The food is spectacular and the wine is top drawer. We visited when the sun was shining and the whole time was simply perfect.

We arrived on a miserable rainy day but had a wonderful experience. Staff were super friendly and attentive. We had the trust the chef menu and would HIGHLY recommend. One of the best meals we’ve ever had. Served by Lauren who is clearly experienced in hospitality - very attentive without being being overbearing in any way. Great wine, great food, great experience overall and would recommend. Probably even better on a nice day!
