Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Called in for cheese tasting & that's what we did for as long as we liked & as much as we wanted as no one around to care!

Eventually a staff member walked through but he was off to his car. Then a lady came in, spoke maybe two words to us. We did buy some cheese but no staff cared either way.

I checked on the website before leaving Christchurch on the opening hours; it said 9 am so I got there in time. The banner outside said Open; the sign on the door said Open from 9. The shop was shut. I waited 15 minutes and it was still closed. So I then headed off with my substantial order for a special function to another Canterbury cheese factory. Will use them again instead of here.

Not only can you view the cheese being made, you can taste it on site and purchase small pieces perfect for a holiday at home evening cheeseboard selection. Have now tried several varieties... Wow will be back here again and when I need I can order from the website.. Always looking for new ideas and suggestions... I suggested Havatti with walnuts (a Danish French type cheese) let us see if they make it... it would be yummy as they had locally grown sacks of walnuts for sale.. Also many different accompaniments for the cheeseboard. As we purchased some cheddar I also purchased some balsamic pickled onions.. Yummy

Great place to stop and sample some of the best cheese New Zealand has to offer. A place to get great cheese bargains. Sadly covid restrictions meant not many tasting opportunities.

We stopped by for a visit while enroute to Akaroa. It was a delightful little boutique cheese shop. Lots of variety of locally made cheeses are available and we enjoyed the free cheese tasting as well. We could look through the glass window from the shop to view the factory where the cheese are made. We ended by an assortment of cheeses to take home. The do online orders as well. Highly recommend.

Great little place on the road from Christchurch to Akaroa. A great selection of cheeses made on site. There’s a viewing window to see the cheese made as well. A selection of 4 cheeses to taste, all were delicious. We bought 2 cheese blocks and crackers. The lovely assistant gave us a cold bag to keep the cheese cold while we were in Akaroa.

We stopped on the way to Akaroa to sample some cheese. I was a little disappointed with the selection of cheese available but I did buy some Masdaam cheese that I hadn't tried before and also some very nice cumin spice cheddar.

While nothing special at this shop, I would still visit again.

As a cheese shop (obviously its main function), I'm sure Barry's Bay has anything a buyer might want and more. We went there with great anticipation having heard there was a bit more of an 'experience' involved, however brief, as well as to buy a picnic lunch. We were the only customers there and saw various members of staff stocking shelves and at the counter, not one of whom said hello or offered to help us choose or learn anything about cheese. We felt so awkward that we ended up leaving without buying anything - it seemed nobody minded whether we did or not.

If you are looking for a place to watch cheese being made this is a must see place. It is conveniently located on the road to Akaroa about an hour drive from Christchurch. Barry's Bay cheese is sold in grocery stores in the North and South Islands and it is delicious!!! There are plentiful samples available for tasting and you can purchase freshly made cheese and beverages. And, there are picnic tables outside you can sit and enjoy your cheese. Lovely, lovely setting!

Thanks Sunlee56! Yes, many people enjoy a picnic outside in the summer, with a platter of cheese and crackers! Thanks for stopping in!

A drive over to picturesque Akaroa is not complete without stopping on the way to the cheese factory.
Operating since 1895 the milk is locally sourced and handcrafted using cloth and wax to mature.
If you want to see cheese making in operation you will need to be there by midday. With huge viewing windows you will be able to watch the cheese makers in action.
Tastings are on offer and then you may select from the wide range of tasty cheeses to suit all taste buds.
Gift boxes are also available or you may just purchase for yourself.
My favourite is Peppered Harvati with a bite.
