Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions...

Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions and the only World Heritage listed building in the State. The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. With solitary cells and gallows Fremantle Prison is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent. Fremantle Prison now holds the key to history, mystery and fun. Step inside and do time with experienced guides on a fascinating Prison Day Tour. Explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20m beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour adventure. Feeling brave? Delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on an eerie Torchlight Tour.

Well worth a visit. Tour guide was fantastic, so much info. Amazed prison was open so long given the bucket toilet situation.

Stopped by for the doing time tour as it was recommended by the guide since it was our first time here. We were able to wander around the front yard and the cafe as we waited for the tour to commence. The tour lasted about 1.5 hours and I had enjoyed more then I thought I would. The guide was... More

We did the 'Doing time tour' (1 1/2 hours) and what a great tour it was, the guide was fantastic, so informative, making history fun to learn about. You get to see more or less all the prison, cells, kitchen, exercise yards, solitary confinement cells, church even the gallows and lots more besides! A very interesting place, full of history,... With only limited time available on our (unplanned) half-day train trip to Fremantle from Perth, we could only afford the time for the standard tour with our helpful guide Steven - it would have been interesting to try out one of the longer tours. Still we got to see some very interesting sights and learned a lot of important history... More

We did the "doing time" day tour which was very interesting and informative. We only had a couple of hours, but there are other tours available if you had more time. A lovely old building and an insight into the treatment of prisoners in days gone by. Particularly intrigued by the gallows exhibit.

It was my first time in Perth, Fremantle Prison of course is on my must-visit list. I have joined the "Doing Time" day tour (1 hour 15 mins). It is amazing. The tour guide showed you around the prison, telling you the history of it, how it got built up, how the prison kept their prisoners, and how the prisoners... More

A must see if you are interested in really understanding Fremantle and WA. I've been to this World Heritage site twice, and I've been on the basic tour as well as the great escape tour. Still waiting for the opportunity to do the tunnel tour. The guides do an excellent job with making your experience as informative as possible while... More

I had the pleasure of showing overseas visitors around Fremantle. The absolute highlight was the trip to the Prison and learning about our convict past - without whom Perth would not have been established due to their incredible contribution to the infrastructure in the 1850's. Terrific Tour Guide kept us entertained with local facts and stories. What a dark story... More

I have seen a few mconvict penitentiaries. This is so fascinating, partly because it was used up until recent years. The guide was a humourous ladies, Maxine I think. She was full of interesting facts and made the whole experience come alive. Some parts very sad, some parts just hilarious. It wasnt hard to picture in your minds eye how... More
