- JoBrisbane, Australia101 contributionsInteresting DayWe arrived early and were lucky enough to be able to book a submarine tour for later in the day. The Australia 2 exhibit was excellent, the video was interesting and the Lego model very impressive. We found the other exhibits well presented and interesting. The submarine tour was excellent, our guide Alex is an ex-submariner and talked very knowledgeably about the submarine, I feel like I learned a lot.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 October 2023
- TMM818Bunbury, Australia825 contributionsYachties DelightA sneaky group roadtrip for the day from our Sailing Club for the Australia II Exhibition - we had a great time! The main exhibit was great and we throughly enjoyed the rest of the museum too. Luckily for us they had kids activities; colour in a yacht and scan in to display in a virtual race. We all coloured in to match our own yachts with current colours and watched them race - what a hoot! Not just for the kids :)Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 17 October 2023
- reeciebobsieFrankston, Australia113 contributionsWell worth the Sub tour and Australia IIStumbled across this while googling things to do in Freo. Was great to see Australia II on display and all the exhibits about it too. Never realised we had a few cracks before we actually won in 83. The highlight was the sub tour with an actual ex serving submariner. Gave some great, honest insight into what it was like to be on board and how they managed to live, serve and keep us all safe.. highly recommend and would do it again for another set of stories.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 31 October 2023

His persepectives were unique and often very personal through his involvement with Fremantle and the museum through the years. We enjoyed his engaging and relaxed delivery styl . A wonderful Sunday afteroon in November, in our port city.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 12 November 2023
- Schlepper1939Brisbane Region, Australia890 contributionsAn excellent attraction to visitIf you are thinking of visiting this attraction, make sure you leave plenty of time as it does not lent itself to a quick look see. Situated in an ideal location overlooking the harbour, one could spend many hours delving into WA maritime history. It includes an excellent display of Australia II and the America’s Cup. If you are energetic, include the guided tour of HMAS Ovens, a submarine. The tour takes about an hour but it gives great insight in the life of a submarinerVisited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 December 2023
- Amanda EMelbourne, Australia210 contributionsEnjoyable, wonderful insights into links between the sea and Fremantle/WAWe visited the Maritime Museum as a group of three adults, mid-week and during the afternoon. Admission fee is $15 per adult (less for concession). Recommended to allow 2-3 hours for a visit. Paid parking is available at the Museum, alternatively it's about 10-15 minutes walk from the area near Fremantle Market. The admissions staff were friendly and welcoming and providing us with a quick overview of the Museum. Free tours are available twice per day (one morning, one afternoon). We went for a stroll through the various galleries of the Museum, learning about the way that the sea and coast has shaped the lives of those living in WA, from first nations, pre-European explorers, European settlement, fishing industry, immigration, transport, pearling and recreation and sport (including America's Cup). Displays provide for various ages, including activities for children. There are options to purchase additional tours (submarine) and experiences (movies). There is a cafe and gift shop. The Maritime Museum is filled with information. The day we visited was fairly quiet; it was most enjoyable to spend some time in the Museum where it's warm and dry on a wintry day.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 September 2024

This museum is packed with interesting exhibits and there is a separate trip you can do around the Submarine which is housed next to the museum building. Don't miss that trip it takes about an hour and you will have a completely different outlook on submariners when you have done it. You need a good bit of time to do the museum justice

We arrived late in the day, and the front desk was kind enough to let us in for free. We ran around the excellent special exhibition on Ancient Roman civilization, particularly the engineering aspects of the Republic and later Empire, and then quickly looked at the rest of the museum. Our big regret was that we did not have enough time to do justice to this excellent museum.

The Ovens Submarine tour was a standout and I highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting Fremantle. You book it through the Maritime Museum. Runs for around 2 hours, all of which is spent inside the submarine. You get to see everything so really experience what life on board would have been like. What made the tour even more meaningful and enjoyable was our tour leader Jeff. Jeff served on this very submarine for 2 years so we not only got to experience what life would have been like, but we got to hear first hand stories of his day to day life on board. History is so easily lost over the years and having Jeff involved in these tours helps to keep it alive.

This relatively new museum is on the dockside in Fremantle. It has a great range of exhibits including Australia II, the boat which won the America’s Cup. The exhibits are well explained and there are hands on exhibits for young visitors.

The WA Maritime Museum on Victoria Quay is one of two museums relating to the sea in Fremantle, the other being the WA Shipwreck Museum, about 600m away. The WA Maritime Museum is built in the shape of a sail and has two levels with - apart from the permanent collection - special exhibitions such as about 'Ancient Rome. Innovators and Engineers', when I was there.
There are different type of boats and ships to be seen in the museum. A section deals with Fishing in Perth and Fremantle. I was interested in reading about a man from the small Greek island of Kastelorizo, where I once lived, who started the Oyster Beds in Western Australia. From the same island is the still active Kailis Fishery and Seafood restaurant here.
What I also remember from this museum are curiosities such as the world's oldest message in a bottle (with the bottle being exhibited). Then a Megamouth Shark, preserved in ethanol and the 'Australia II' yacht, which in 1983 won the America's Cup, partly also thanks to a novel winged keel.

The Museum was very modern, and is situated on the waterfront, near to the ferry terminals. HMAS Ovens is actually outside the museum, but can also be seen from the windows inside. It wasn't open to visitors on our visit.
Adjacent to the Ovens is a small steam museum, which is staffed by volunteers and is well worth a visit.
The Museum has a replica of the Americas Cup, next to the yacht which won it.
We enjoyed our visit, and the visit to the cafe was very welcome too.

Usually when I visit Fremantle I make a point to visit the Maritime Museum. There is always something different to view. This visit there was a Roman Display in addition to the usual boats and maritime displays.
Stopped half way around and had a coffee and cake, most enjoyable.

A great way to spend a few hours of an afternoon. We had the good fortune of being shown around some of the exhibits by a guide called Matthew. It was refreshing to hear somebody speak with such passion about their work and the museum itself. If only we could all enjoy our jobs as Matthew clearly does.

I am looking for history on MV IONA.
She was gifted to the RAN in 1940 and used on boom defense's in Fremantle and Cockburn Sound.
I have a copy of a letter from Navy Office stating the vessel would be returned to the previous owner
after the war or when no longer required.
Mr & Mrs G Andrews were her previous owners.
I have a rough photo of a plaque however not aware where it is located.
