Opposite is a steam engine museum that you don't even pay to go in so you get a bonus if you venture this way.Visited November 2022Written 4 December 2022
- audreyling2014Singapore, Singapore16 contributionsGreat Submarine Tour at the museumThe museum is located right next to the harbour at Freo, where it has a rich maritime and port history. We took the Submarine Tour together with my husband and 7-year old boy. The tour guide, was was an ex-submariner, gave us a wonderful tour of an actual submarine (yes, we went into a real submarine!) and we learnt lots from him as he shared about his past working experiences. He also took care to make my boy engaged during the tour which I appreciated a lot and was very patient with him. Thank you for making our visit such a memorable one!Visited December 2022Written 6 December 2022
- car0leb66Brisbane, Australia232 contributionsInteresting Place for Tourists to PerthWe enjoyed wandering around looking at the interesting maritime history on display. The building itself is awe inspiring. There were a good range of goods in the giftshop especially for children. I particularly enjoyed the interactive fish display with real fish and the very informative fellow to tell me all about them. That was the best part. The worst part was the parking (or lack of).Visited January 2023Written 6 February 2023

It details Freemantle/Perth’s history of its relationship with the ocean. There’s detailed exhibits on the history of the indigenous peoples, the fishing and seafood industries and their development, the boating history including the river boats and yachting. The Australia II Yacht is housed here. The upper levels detail West Australia’s boating heritage and it’s naval history. Unfortunately many of the exhibits are poorly labeled or mislabeled making it a little hard to reconcile the dialogue with the exhibits however all in all it is a great way to spend a few hours.Visited February 2023Travelled soloWritten 15 February 2023
- Wanderering1Lake Macquarie, Australia743 contributionsDon’t Miss the WA Maritime MuseumWhat a fabulous display and general admission is a voluntary donation. The museum has an excellent array of nautical exhibits covering immigration, pearl diving, submarines (including the conning tower from AE2 our WW1 sub) and an around-the-world yacht. Of course the best exhibit is the Americas Cup winning yacht ‘Australia II’. The one that the New York Yacht Club couldn’t beat by any means: fair or foul.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 March 2023
- Allons!Gloucester, Virginia221 contributionsOutstanding nautical museum. Equal to if not better than the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News, Virginia!Have visited Mariner’s Museum many times, so I know what right looks like. You outscored them! From the friendly, knowledgeable docents, the cafe behind the counter with great view of the harbor, simply outstanding! I especially liked the oldest message in a bottle exhibit! Just wish there wqs more available regarding the submarine being repaired just outside. Well worth the visit!Visited June 2023Travelled soloWritten 22 June 2023

The Australia 2 exhibit was excellent, the video was interesting and the Lego model very impressive. We found the other exhibits well presented and interesting. The submarine tour was excellent, our guide Alex is an ex-submariner and talked very knowledgeably about the submarine, I feel like I learned a lot.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 October 2023

The main exhibit was great and we throughly enjoyed the rest of the museum too. Luckily for us they had kids activities; colour in a yacht and scan in to display in a virtual race. We all coloured in to match our own yachts with current colours and watched them race - what a hoot! Not just for the kids :)Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 17 October 2023

Was great to see Australia II on display and all the exhibits about it too. Never realised we had a few cracks before we actually won in 83. The highlight was the sub tour with an actual ex serving submariner. Gave some great, honest insight into what it was like to be on board and how they managed to live, serve and keep us all safe.. highly recommend and would do it again for another set of stories.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 31 October 2023

Having made my way to Fremantle I decided to visit the Maritime Museum on a whim. There is currently another exhibition entitled 'Sea Monsters: Prehistoric Predators' which costs an additional AU $15 on top of the standard AU $15 to visit the museum itself.
I recalled enjoyed the Sea Monsters exhibition with its incredible fossil displays and then the museum itself which had an impressive collection of life-size boats and a preserved whale shark. There is a lot of historic information regarding the development of the fishing community as well as the harbour during WW2.
The submarine display is currently closed for upgrading until the end of June so if you're going there for that you'll be out of luck. I recommend going in the morning (the museum opens at 9am) and spending about 2 hours there before exploring the rest of Fremantle.

A great experience with fascinating exhibits. The submarine was closed for restoration but that didn’t detract as there is much more to see and do. A hidden gem is the steam engine exhibit in the old workshop adjacent to the main building

We took my 83yo dad and we loved it. Plenty to see, read and watch here at the museum. History across the timeline of maritime in WA, including Australia 2. There is a lift if needed to access the 2nd and 3rd floors.
Outside the museum is a display of all 21000 names of people who came to WA via sea, very interesting.

The museum is lovely and has a great selection of exhibits.
Unfortunately many of the exhibits are poorly labeled or mislabeled making it a little hard to reconcile the dialogue with the exhibits however all in all it is a great way to spend a few hours.

Well worth a visit. The submarine, called the HMS Ovens.
Google this to find booking info (this site won't let me put the limk for you!)
Can I visit the Kylie temporary exhibition without paying to go into the rest of the museum? Thanks

I am looking for history on MV IONA.
She was gifted to the RAN in 1940 and used on boom defense's in Fremantle and Cockburn Sound.
I have a copy of a letter from Navy Office stating the vessel would be returned to the previous owner
after the war or when no longer required.
Mr & Mrs G Andrews were her previous owners.
I have a rough photo of a plaque however not aware where it is located.
