About
The WA Shipwrecks Museum is recognised as the foremost maritime archaeology museum in the southern hemisphere. The Museum is housed in 1850s-era Commissariat building and has since been restored to its historic glory. Steeped in history, the galleries house hundreds of relics from ships wrecked along WA’s treacherous coastline, including the original timbers from Batavia (wrecked in 1629), the de Vlamingh Dish, and also countless artefacts from the Dutch shipwrecks Zuytdorp, Zeewijk and Vergulde Draeck.

    Really Worth A Visit.
Don't miss this bite size piece of amazing history!! I loved this place and couldn't believe it was entry by gold coin donation. The collection on show was extensive and really interesting. Everyone should know the story of the Batavia, as grim as it is, it's an amazing tale. I highly recommend a visit. Friendly staff too.

    Well Presented Museum
This museum showcases objects recovered from a number of local shipwrecks. The highlight, and the reason I went, was the section of the hull of the Batavia. Well presented and very interesting. Well worth the visit for the Batavia and the huge array of objects on display.

    Interesting tour.
If you are into shipwrecks and seeing the treasures found under the sea then this is the place for you! All pieces have been carefully catalogued and explained in great detail in all of the displays showing their final destinations. A really interesting and well laid out museum for everyone to enjoy and if you ask the staff are more than willing to give you any extra information.

Easy museum to miss in Fremantle.
We stopped here on our cross town walk from the dominantly sited Maritime Museum to the large UNESCO Fremantle Prison. This small museum is housed in the 1850’s Commissariat Building which is fronted with old anchors. The entrance was free/donation and the interior a bit disjointed but its featured remains of the 1629 wreck of the "Batavia," off the coast of Western Australia is very interesting, along with the objects recovered and the story behind the 300 of the 341 passengers that made their way ashore with the rest drowning.

    Surprise find
Mostly about early Dutch discoveries, really interesting and also free! There’s lots of info about wrecks. The part of a shipwrecked boat is not quite The Mary Rose but equally fascinating. We wandered down to the beach and found it by accident on the way back. Nice shop.

    Well Done
We visited this museum on a recent visit to Perth. It was very well done and has a lot of artifacts that have been responsibly collected, catalogued and displayed. The information boards and presentations were also well done and we left feeling like we'd learned a lot. This attraction is free but donations are accepted. If you are at all a sailing or diving enthusiast this is a must-see for you.

    Wonderful collection
A great collection of artefacts from various shipwrecks. Very good stories to explain what happened. The Batavia display is amazing, and Geoff was able to give us a very detailed answer to my question about provenance of the overall collection. Worth visiting, and nicely air conditioned,

    Great experience
An impressive museum which showcases the archaeology of the maritime. This place is funded through the donations from the visitors and does not impose any entrance fees. The collections of artefacts were amazing, and you can immerse yourself in a maritime journey as your stroll past the various exhibits and halls.

This is a fascinating museum with some impressive exhibits of wrecks plus charts on early explorers. A great place to spend an hour or so. Read about how the ships of the early world explorers were wrecked, together with tales of their rescuers

An enlightening and very well presented, dramatically lit museum display that you can do at your own pace. It is a revelation for locals and visitors alike as they come face to face with relics and soundly researched information of the fascinating stories of the West Coast of Australia. Before navigational maps of the unknown South Land were available to traders, so many European sailing ships left it too late to 'turn left' and head for the 'Spice Islands' to the North. The shop and information publications are good value.

Really impressive museum, I particularly liked the Batavia artefacts having read the story. The whole place is really well done, with just enough information about each exhibit so there is no overload. A beautifully restored building, light and airy yet dark when required. A very good small shop with quality but not overpriced things for sale

This is a free museum in Freemantle. There are 2 levels to this museum the ground floor and another level. They offer free behind the scenes tours. There are artifacts and explanations. A person can spent 1 - 2 hours at the museum. This museum gives insight about WA history. One of the original timbers from the ship, Batavia is at the museum. The museum is maybe a 15 minute walk from the train station.

This museum is on the waterfront - a short bus trip from Fremantle railway station.

It's in a restored stonework building with lots of character. There are two levels of exhibits with one special area showing the remains of a timber ship that sailed the WA coast centuries ago.

Great for maritime memorabilia such as cannons. Well worth visiting.

We visited the WA Shipwrecks Museum in summer ... well worth it, especially for history buffs and fans of shipwrecks! It is near the Fremantle foreshore and harbor restaurant district. Extremely well maintained and an absolute attention to detail. Enjoy the visit!

We had the chance to visit whilst in Fremantle for work. We were so impressed with this museum and very surprised that it was free although a donation on entry was appreciated (your choice as to what you drop in the box but definitely recommended). We enjoyed the Batavia exhibition and all of the other exhibitions and we did the free puzzle tour ... you are never too old to find a rat and get a stamp!

We loved this small museum particularly the interesting artefacts from each of the featured shipwrecks. There is plenty to read and study regarding the ships that were lost along the Australian coast. Interestingly, we came across the names of the ships as we travelled down the coast to Albany in each of the towns.

My wife and I 'stumbled' across the WA Shipwrecks Museum on our day in Fremantle. We hadn't planned to visit it, but we were so glad we did. The museum is exceptionally well laid out and is full of interesting exhibits, displays, artefacts and information boards. The stand-out exhibit is probably the 'Batavia' Gallery, but there is so much more. We found it particularly interesting because of its focus on WA, and because references were made to some of the stories and events we had been made familiar with as a result of tours we had already taken, and it was interesting to find out more about some of these events and stories. Highly recommended.

A very interesting place; lots of information, but not easily accessible with kids in tow, because a lot of dense information written up on plaques. Good kids information-trail-Hunt. Good 3D displays of wrecks, that help understand the size perspective. Very very good use of a small space .
