Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Well trodden bridge and very picturesque from both sides -morning evening in the sunlight.
No traffic aloud across.
Several spans offer small seating areas on the right hand side.
Walkway across to the lovely town and square area, that includes many type shows concerts on during the summer season

A beautiful old bridge worth spending some time on for thelovely views of the river. On one side is a maze of old cobbled streets with old buildings, small squares and plenty of restaurants and the opposite side is the Praca Republica (the town square) with its amphitheatre . The bridge itself is cobbled and traffic free. The views of the river are best when the tide is in.

The bridge is an excellent starting point for exploring both sides of the river. If like us, you stay in Tavira, you’ll cross it many times.
It’s a wide pedestrian-only bridge, with 7 low long arches and ornate wrought iron railings which seem to have largely escaped the scourge of the padlocks. It crosses the River Gilão and links the main square, Praca da Republica with the bars and restaurants on the other side.
I’m not really sure why it is called the Roman Bridge. It was only built in 1667 so it was a bit of a puzzle. There’s been a bridge on the site since the 13th century but that still doesn't explain the Roman name. In any case, the bridge adds to the historic charm and unspoiled character of the old town. From the middle of the bridge, you get expansive views down the length of the river on both sides.
We often found ourselves stopping mid-way, intrigued by the massive variation in the water level. At high tide, even small boats might only scrape through the arches. At low tide, large areas of rocks emerged and the water barely covered some patches. River-side houses were left with their backdoor staircases suspended in mid-air above the water. At the extreme, the tide can vary by 3 metres.
A blue and white glazed tile plaque at the southern end of the bridge also caught my eye. It commemorates a battle fought sometime during 1383 – 1385 when the men of Tavira and Faro gathered and made a stand here to successfully defend the bridge against King Juan’s forces.

We were told by multiple people that Tavira was the prettiest town in the area and we were glad we listened! We stopped through after having lunch in Lagos and wished we had just come straight here. The bridge connects two old sections of the city but the neighborhoods themselves are the real attraction. Have lunch or coffee in one of the many cafes by the river!

Coming from Canada, the only thing that dates back to 400 AD is our dirt. It is awe inspiring to see a piece of history that has survived an earthquake an tsunami.
I was very glad we got to see the Roman Bridge, amazing how their engineering has stood the test of time and Mother Nature.

Well it does what a bridge needs to do very well - it bridges! Links the two halves of Tavira for pedestrians at its heart. Very lovely really with lots of what would have been cart or donkey passing places in olden times, but now are just lovely spacious niches to sit along their stone benches. There is a tradition of leaving closed metal padlocks attached to the railing with the names of lovers or loved ones on them. Hundreds of them. Strolling across at night with all the lights of Tavira burning is very romantic.

We walked across this bridge most days and at night. Lots of musicians. It's a good place for a photo stop. Beautiful at night. There are a few seats. This takes you into Tavira which is a small city. The bridge is very old. It's a must.
