Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The proce is very high and there is nothing more to see than what you can find in a free entrance church.
Inside the church there are several people asking for money or to buy things.
It was really bad. Until now it is by far my worst experience.
ARTgilão TAVIRA and Santa Casa da Misericórdia find a way to raise money from nothing and are exploring tourists and giving a bad name to the catholicism and the Tavira city.

Caro senhor

Of all the many churches in Tavira, the Igreja da Misericordia exudes the strongest sense of place. Behind the deceptively plain Renaissance facade lies one of the most marvelous arrays of pictorial tiles to be seen in Portugal. Scenes depict acts of charity performed by the nuns who originally commissioned the church. The baroque altar screen is also quite literally breathtaking. The space doubles as a concert venue for fado performances and mixed choral/orchestral groups. If you're lucky, your visit will be led/accompanied by the caretaker's very friendlyfeline companion.

From the outside this church looks plain ad simple, but step inside and prepare to be wowed. The walls are covered with blue and white azulejo tiles showing acts of charity carried out by the nuns whose convent church this used to be. The tiles are well maintained and beautiful. The organ loft and altar piece is another work of art. Well worth a visit and especially for a fado concert.

We went to a fado concert with explanations in several languages. And the church was a surprise because of the diversity of styles it has. The floor plan is Renaissance and the Portuguese tiles and altarpieces are baroque. I loved the representation of the 14 misericords and the wonderful level of conservation in which the tiles are found. Without a doubt, whoever goes to Tavira should stop by the church, which is also super central.

Small church (as all other churches in Tavira) with a very original and nice baroque interior full of azulejos (blue tiles). I have not seen many churches with this decoration. Also a nice tower and a small exhibition. I learned what is “tocar la matraca”

My advice at the end of the contribution, if you do not want to read it in full.
By visiting the Algarve, you will have the opportunity to enter a number of religious buildings. Some are paid (but it’s symbolic), others are not. Many have explanations that enhance the visit with cultural, artistic, architectural and theological knowledge. So you won’t have the Impression of strolling around looking at simple stones or works without information.
Visiting the Church of Mercy will take you 30 to 40 minutes and admission is three euros per person. If you have to stop on its Renaissance façade with its statue of Our Lady Mercy (I do not know if the statue dates from the 16th century, like the church), the interior is truly sumptuous. On the walls run 14 scenes of the life of Christ made in azulejos, and date from 1740. Latin inscriptions explain each scene. However, the QR Code must be used to explain it in both Portuguese and English. Thus you will understand each scene (Jesus feeding the hungry, dressing the naked, burying the deceased, comforting the sad...).
When you face the magnificent baroque covered with gold leaf (a specialty in Portugal), you realize that the railing that delimits it is blue in order to recall the azulejos. At the foot of the altar is a statue of Fatima and on the left an inaccessible chapel.
On the right, on a grandstand supported by wooden pillars painted imitation red marble is an organ but I found no information about it. Still on the right but directly next to the altar, you must stop at the 1722 altarpiece representing Notre Dame de la Conception (a QR Code will give you more information).
On either side of the nave are four grey stone arches whose top leads to a light wood vaulted ceiling. The columns seem to me to have a Corinthian-style capital but I can make a mistake.
It would seem that a renowned pianist is present to play classical music, adding to the magnificence of the place, a calming atmosphere.
The visit is not limited to the church itself. After passing through a small exhibition of liturgical objects, we climb up a spiral stone staircase of 33 steps. The tower is more recent, dating from the 17th century. This allows you to see the city of Tavira 360 degrees. The space is quite small and you can quickly be tightened. After the descent, we were able to briefly dwell on a temporary exhibition dealing with bread, oil and wine in the Mediterranean tradition, specifically within the three main monotheistic religions. The explanations are written in Portuguese and English. For each religion, a poster explains the symbols. Objects are on display, I find it playful. In addition, the rooms have superbly maintained creaking wooden flooring and the first of a beautiful painted wooden ceiling.
In summary, for a successful visit:
- check opening hours;
- the tower of the bell can be closed depending on the weather conditions;
- allow 30 to 40 minutes of visit;
- use your smartphone to access information about places and works.

Came for the evening fado concert which was wonderful. Had some time beforehand to explore the main part of the church. Lovely porcelain exemplary panels. Acoustics are good in the church. The Baroque altar is stupendous.

This church is well worth the 2 Euros entrance fee. You can pay slightly more to go up the bell tower or you can get a combined ticket to visit the church of Santa Maria ( a short walk away by the castle). When we visited there was a young man playing the grand piano in the church and the acoustics were absolutely brilliant. We didn't want to leave.

This little gem is classified as a National Monument. Located in the heart of this beautiful town it is definitely worth a visit to see the 17 century ecclesiastical architecture - lovely hand painted glazed tiles

The local singers and guitar players were great and we came away with a couple of discs to remind us of the event. The setting was unusual with the beautiful blue tiles of the church adding to the atmosphere. The lady guide, Fatima, made us most welcome. I think there might be another concert in February and we would certainly recommend it.
