Massive Soviet built monument to memorialize their victory over Germany in WWII. The statue is in a large park area with many other sporting activities. It seems a bit neglected and has spots of graffiti on it. This area used to be more used for ceremonial events, but just seems to be quietly decaying. Worth a visit, especially if you are interested in the Soviet period or art.

This park is definitely worth a visit for a number of reasons. Firstly as a piece of architecture built in the classic soviet realist style and it certainly is an epic piece of work if contentious in modern day Latvia. The memorial "commeorating" the victory of the red army in WW2 is impressive in scale and also set in a nice park where you can sit and reflect upon all the complex issues this parks seems to throw up in terms of Latvia 's relationship as part of the former USSR and current relationship with both modern day Russia and the 25% of its population that are ethnic Russians. You can easily walk there from the centre but my tip is to get a train from Riga Central station one stop to Tornakains station (many trains stop there). The park is only about 5 minutes walk from Tornakains station and you can see another interesting monument at the station which offers an interesting contrast to Victory Park. This is a railway wagon which commeorates the 15,000 Latvians who were shipped to Siberia in 1941 by Stalin after the USSR annexed Latvia in Latvia. In a way these two monuments represent both sides of the same coin and highlight the contradictions and complex issues faced in modern Latvia. Especially with respect to its relationships both with Russia as a nation , it's people and of course those Latvians of Russian descent.

Many locals feel that the monument in this park is a symbol of their repression under communist rule and would like to see it torn down. The park it not very impressive, and the statue is worn down even though it was built in the 80s.

This review refers to the old sowjet monument, which simply does not exist anymore. According to decision by Latvian authorities it was demolished. Demolition started on 23rd of August. As of today, 26th of August the two statues and the obelisk are gone.
The Latvian and Estonian governments have decided, as a reaction to the Russian invasion of Ukraine to remove remaining Sovjet era monuments.

This is a relatively new monument, built in 1985, not long before the fall of the Soviet Union and the independence of Latvia (again). Many reviewers of this monument incorrectly state that it is a monument to the Russian Red Army. That is incorrect as it is a monument to the Soviet Red Army, a very different thing to the people of the Baltic Republics. There is talk of destroying the monument because of what it really represents, not the victory over the Nazis, but the occupation of the Baltics. The monument itself is typical Soviet style and huge. There is not much care given to the monument as no one really wants it there. If you can visit, by all means do just for the history of this monument and it may not be there all that long.

While this was an interesting place to visit, it felt quite rundown and forgotten about. You get the impression that it's not really wanted by the locals and wouldn't be surprised if it's removed in coming years.

This enormous monument is really worth visiting. It is only a short walk away from the library. And it is breathtaking. And huge.

The Victory park is quite a walk from the old town and there is not much there to see. Pretty much just statues no Information and not so well looked after. I would skip this attraction.

The park itself is pleasant enough, but the only reason to make a special trip would be to see the Soviet war memorial. It displays the usual characteristics of all these communist-era statues: it's monumental and overbearing in scale, with the usual heroic figures to admire, in this case the victorious Soviets in the second world war. It's clearly designed to impress from a distance as you approach it from the old town.

The fact that it serves as a war memorial has probably safeguarded it, along with the large number of ethnic Russians living in Riga, who would understandably be appalled if it was razed to the ground. But it doesn't seem very loved or cared for and seemed to be in use as an unofficial youth club. It's been there for 30 odd years but I don't fancy its chances of lasting another 30, at least in its current form.

It is a pretty park but it looks like a controversial spot. It is nice on a sunny day and good for families but there is not much to see there really.
