The story behind this unique architecture tells of its Latvian owner who was denied membership in the powerful Great Guild; to show his displeasure, he built two cat sculptures on his roof with their backsides facing the Guild and their tails straight up to finish the insult.

it's the cat house... this building has become the unofficial symbol of Riga. The house itself dates from 1909 . Part of a popular legend ... not much more into it. The 2 black cats point nowhere in particular, but are constantly posing for the...More

Nice, but not as spectacular as expected. In the middle of the Old Town, which, by the way, is really worth visiting.

As visiting goes, I noticed cats on many of the souvenirs. So I asked my wife. So we asked a person or two for directions and were soon standing in front of the cat house. I enjoyed it. It's a pretty cool place.

Considering the cat is the symbol of Riga I was expecting this house to be more impressive. It is on a street corner and we nearly missed it, then looked up and saw the two cat statues, which were quite small

A unique landmark of Riga, with an interesting story behind those two black cats which raised so proud on the top of the building.

I saw the Cat House on the post card and decided to go and see it myself. I asked the Tourist Information Center and it could easily be found.

This Art Nouveau building is located in the Old Town outside the crowded tourist areas. We were walking around and found it by chance. Since I´m attracted to Art Nouveau I looked up and was surprised by the black cats... quite a nice surprise!
