Pleasant place - mid week best time to visit
Picturesque town centre, just very pleasant to wonder around. We had lovely weather, warm and sunny which enhanced our visit no end. I think it would be challenging in poor weather - its very much an outdoor experience. You need comfortable shoes too - cobbles everywhere. Plenty of bars and tattoo parlours, a legacy from Riga being a prime stag and hen do destination perhaps. Not much in the way of shops selling interesting or quality goods. Although we did stumble across a few shops selling lovely jewellery and locally made crafts and clothing - and all quite expensive. We were there mid week which I think is the preferred time to visit, it was quiet and peaceful. We did return to Riga at the end of our trip and it was a weekend. The atmosphere had changed. It was very busy, quite congested and there were lots of gangs of young men bar crawling and some being quite rowdy. It was still warm sunny weather and some of them were in a state of undress! Might have been the residue from the Wales v Latvia match maybe or stag parties.

    Beautiful Old Town
The old town is so stunningly beautiful, the architecture of the buildings are breathtaking and the streets are all cobbled. There are lots of things to do and see but be prepared to do lots of walking! We walked on average 7-8 miles each day, so make sure you've got comfy flat shoes! We visited from Tuesday - Saturday and at the start of our holiday it was fairly quiet but on Friday it became much busier, we spotted typical stag Brits aboard which broke the lovely ambience of the city somewhat (I am British by the way). A few things to do which are a must: St Peter's Church and tower (stunning views), House of the Blackheads (beautiful!), canal boat trip, Three Brothers, Black Magic cafe plus lots more. We will definitely come back as we loved it so much.

    Superb City Break
Spent 6 days in Riga with friends and enjoyed soaking up the atmosphere of the Old Town. The area is a UNESCO Site and certainly deserves this status. The buildings are magnificent and well maintained. Many are free entry and where payment is requested, it is minimal. The many cafes and restaurants serve food to a high culinary standard and we soon found that sampling the menus of the various restaurants was a great part of our holiday in Riga. Discovering the quirky restaurants in cellars and basements was an evening adventure in itself. Some also had entertainment so arrive early ie 6pm.

    Highlight of the trip
Old Riga is the highlight of a visit in Latvia. It is compact that most of the interesting attractions in Riga could be found here and walking distance from each other. Packed with restaurants and bars, Old Riga is a place you will definitely enjoy.

    Warm place to visit
Nice and "warm" place to walk around. Good services and food. Relatively easy to navigate. Some nice looking streets and sights. As a one negative thing, we had big group so, it was hard to find breakfast place that would fit us all from old town.

    Great city to visit.
Feeling like in a small Vienna. Quite empty for May month but it was raining. Great places where to spend evening. Impressive Vinyl lounge bar near by main square name Livu.

    Beautiful old town
We loved Riga old town. It was great to explore all the beautiful, parks, streets and it is very compact city. We loved popping in to the many bars, shops and restaurants. There’s also a great market near the bus station with plenty of stalls and food venues within. Transport is easy due to train and bus stations. There’s not much of interest across the river apart from the massive library. Prices for food and drink are reasonable.

    To trzeba zobaczyć
Trzeba zobaczyć największą wśród krajów nadbałtyckich średniowieczną Katedrę z XIII wieku, Bramę Szwedzką i Basztę Prochową oraz Zamek Prezydencki z XIV wieku. Polecam Stare Miasto w Rydze.

    Undiscovered Gem… inexpensive too!
Fabulous medieval city center! Well worth booking a tour to learn the history of this fascinating city. Riga has three UNESCO sites : the old medieval city center, Alberta Street which is filled with gorgeous, restored, art deco buildings, and the Central Market. The Central Market is a group of repurposed zeppelin hangars from WWII. It is now the largest market in Europe and features food, fish, vegetables, fruit, clothes, shoes, leatherwares, etc. In Pavillion number 2, there are bars and food halls. There are numerous museums and several beautiful cathedrals. The city is built around a beautiful river and park. It’s perfect for strolling, and picnics.

    What a beautiful city
The whole city of Riga is just beautiful. The city is best seen on foot as the cobbled streets meander this way and that. The city has plenty of churches and other amazing buildings but also plenty of places for food and drink. A stunning place.

Old Riga, has architecture to look at that is best seen on a bright day. There are several shops to pop in and out of including the standard coffee shops which are ever popular in cities these days.
When we visited there were a few market stalls selling local souvenirs.
The cobbled streets add to the atmosphere of the old streets and in the evening there was a busker singing opera on one of the corners

Old Town Riga is simply a magical place to explore. So many fun shops to find Latvian goods, awesome restaurants and our favorite coffee cafe, Double Coffee. The cobblestone streets take you back in time, There are museums to visit and several cathedrals to spend time in. The old farmers market is fun to wander, but don't expect the stall workers to be very friendly :) Another great place to visit is across the river from Old Town. The National Library is beautiful inside and even has a cafe so you can enjoy a cup of coffee. We love Riga!

My husband and I traveled here for only 3 days during our trip to Europe. Riga was such a splendid surprise. The history and beauty are beyond description. The old city is so easy to discover with hidden alleys and medieval taverns to have a rest while enjoying a beverage. I can only imagine how beautiful it is in the summer. I had the very best potato pancakes at a small cafe. There were such lovely shops and restaurants to explore we know another visit will happen. You will not be disappointed to put Riga on your bucket list

I visited in September 2022. The old city is very compact and walkable. There are lots of attractions and restaurants. Riga has regular train links to other towns in Latvia. Beware cyclists and e scooters. If you take a bus anywhere you MUST get a ticket beforehand at a Maxima or Narvessen store. My experience is that you can only pay the driver on the N22 bus to and from the airport.

Riga is a beautiful little city. It reminds me a bit of Vilnius Lithuania. I found the food to be very similar. People here bit outwardly friendlier. The city is beautiful with lots art inspired building. Many restaurants and stores and the food is delish esp. the pastries.

To me it is not too busy. It's more laid-back, maybe it's the time of year I visited. (See my post on Riga on my site caribbeansolotraveller.com)

Riga is a a city I would recommend .

If you like old cities and a variety of architectural monuments, you should not miss the Old City of Riga. Many buildings have, depending on the era in which they have been built, magnificent ornaments. And nearly all of them in very good shape.

Visited Riga for a long weekend without any expectations. Now I’m convinced, it’s one of the greatest cities with a great architecture, a great atmosphere and just a great ambiance😊😊

Discover the different squares with a lot of restaurants and bars with live music. Look at the street artists making art with fire , the opera singer , the street music bands and so on.

Riga has a beautiful old town with a few nice corners. The buildings look authentic and the old town had a nice vibe to it when we visited after Christmas with all the decorations still up.

Overall we found Riga a bit disappointing though and the old town is relatively small and outside of it it gets way uglier real fast.

Riga Old Town has its roots in the Middle Ages when Riga was an important Hansa Town with its own port.

While walking the narrow cobblestone streets, you can admire stunning Medieval-era buildings. The Old Town is also famous for its old churches and cathedrals, such as Riga Cathedral and St. Peter's Church.

The buildings are constructed during different periods of time. The over 500 buildings were built in various architectural styles – Romanticism, Gothic, Mannerism, Baroque, Eclectic, Modernism, etc.

Today, Old Town Riga has become a popular entertainment district. You can find here many restaurants, cafes, bars, and nightclubs.

Many hotels can also be found here. For a tourist, it is advisable to stay in the Old Town or near to it.

A visit of Riga Old City will bring you back in history. Most of the buildings were built in the 1900s and survived -or carefully have been restored-. They will point out the long and interesting history of the country but also link the visitor with the present time.
