Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is right by the cruise ship docks and most people just walk past on the way to or from the cruise ships. Some people go for a walk and look at it but really don't know about it. I am not going to tell you - but read about it and then think about the time it was built and why and the waste of it all....a modern day ruin!

Soviet architecture at its finest - unfortunately rotten. Many ratings here are wrongly assigned: it's not the Town Hall or the Old Town: it's the City Hall, an assembly hall (underground because the stairs and plateaus go over it) and at the end offers a Herrlish view of the Baltic Sea towards Helsinki. Ame end - for whatever reason - a helicopter landing site. Soviet architecture of the finest, worth seeing, not completely harmless, because everything is no longer maintained.

Situated in Town Hall Square (obviously!) in the centre of the Old Town, Tallinn City Hall is a beautiful 14th century stone building with a terracotta tiled roof, an impressive steeple, a glittering gold weather vane and hilarious green dragon gargoyles. Unfortunately when we were there, it was closed to visitors.

We ate here and drink some beers. Sitting on top of the building it feels like you are in Soviet Russia at the baltic sea. The views both on the sea but on the old town as well are really good. There are a lot of people sitting here and it is a pleasant way to spend your summer evening.

Worth a visit for a few reasons. One is a fantastic restoration project over a half century. Next is the foundations of municipal democracy in an authentic setting ( next to original). The third is a museum display of costumes of the period and exhibits including the oath of office for those office holders of centuries ago which is needed today!

I was born in the Soviet Union and have a special nostalgy for the "good old days". This place is particularly picteruesque and atmospheric with the awesome views of ocean and old town.
Don't hesitate to buy some beer and food to eat at the pyramide's top.

This concrete structure was built for the 1980 Olympics in USSR. It is no longer is use (was a concert hall more recently) and is dirty and rundown. But fascinating if you want a glimpse of the past. We enjoyed a quick walk around and the views of the sea.

This huge structure is a fine example of Soviet time architecture. It is big, ugly and made of concrete. And it is useless now and I'd assume about to be demolished.

There are, in Tallinn, three high profile constructions that have in the 20+ years since the collapse of the USSR have outwardly retained the appearance of being the product of soviet design and architecture: the Television Tower (still functional), the Maarjamäe Memorial (perpetually sacred) and Linnahall (useless).
Not entirely useless .... Poseidon Nightclub is located somewhere inside (presumably in the concert hall) and the upper level does provide some new angles of views of the harbour and old town
Linnahall occupies prime seafront land.
I suspect that but for the twin challenges of deciding with what to replace Linnahall and financing the immense cost of breaking up and removing the vast quantity of concrete used in its construction, the site would have been redeveloped years ago.
I was fortunate to attend a concert at the Linnahall in winter 2004, arriving not only when there snow on the ground but also during a blizzard. At the time, as the Tallink 'metallic' redevelopment Sadama street had not yet occurred, Linnahall was not overlooked by taller buildings close by.
The overwhelming analogy I had then, as the this enormous but low profile loomed out of the falling snow was of one of Hitler's artillery emplacements that still dot the coast line of the English Channel. This analogy was enhanced by the gloom of the functional, sharply edged corridors that led to and skirted around the vast bowl of the concert hall. There was no attempt in the design of either the exterior or the interior decor to display artistic pleasure, joy or delight.
The solitary impression was a display of SHEER, UNEMOTIONAL POWER to awe not only the native Estonians but also the foreign participants and visitors to the sailing events of the 1984 Olympics that were held in Tallinn.
Ii certainly impressed me. I cannot remember anything about the concert.

I was driving around Tallinn and found this long lost treasure. It's a a shame that it has fallen into such disrepair over time. Graffiti and broken glass are all around. Still, it's worth the time to check it out and walk around.
