After reading the book "Beneath Shade of Grey" and seeing the Nova documentary about a hidden tunnel in the forest outside Vilnius, I wanted to see for myself. Before driving out to the memorial, I visited the remains of the ghetto in Vilnius. Very little evidence remains of the Jewish population in Lithuania after world war 2. This memorial is... More

Very quiet, and we were alone which highlighted the tragedy of what had occurred. You can feel that tragedy walking around. Worth visiting if only for the reminder.

I know most people go in the summer, but we went today. It was a quiet, peaceful atmosphere, as opposed to what happened here. We need to remember so that it doesn't happen again. We were alone which made it more memorable.

We saved our visit to this memorial for our last day in Vilnius, when leaving for Trakai and Riga afterwards. We had a rented car and the memorial is on the way to Trakai, west of Vilnius but be careful not to miss the exit. It is not good signposted, so if lost ask a local. Anyway when there, it's... More

We drove about 17km from Vilnius to the car park. It has space for several cars but only one other there. The museum was closed on our visit but through the shutter we could read the explanation in English. We then walked the paths to each of the pits used for the atrocities and saw the many memorials erected. It... More

This memorial is on the site where up to 100,000 people were murdered during World War Two. There's a small museum which contains very good background information, eye witness accounts and some film. There are several memorials to see around the site and it is set in some nice woodland. I found it very moving and I was really glad... More

After visiting the Genocide Museum in Vilnius (which I highly recommend), we decided to take the train out to Paneriai to visit the memorial and museum. We expected the visit to take one hour max, but we were so engrossed in the museum, and guide and walking around the memorial, that we spent almost four hours there. The train drops... More

The forest looks so peaceful which belies the atrocities carried out here. There are various memorials throughout the woodland and some of the pits remain. The museum is small but very informative and the video is a must see. You are visiting this place to pay homage to those who died and to remind yourself that this must never happen... More

Definitely worth a visit. I'd also visited the Holocaust Museum (Green House) and done a Jewish Walking Tour that morning. So combining all 3, I got a good understanding of the Lithuanian Jews fate.' Quite by chance I'd happened to pick 23 Sept, which was the 75th anniversary of the liquidation of the Vilnius ghetto. So I stumbled upon a... More
