About
Vilnius Cathedral is one of the oldest Lithuanian churches. It was mentioned for the first time in recorded history in 1387, the same year as the Christianization of Lithuania. The Cathedral received the title of St. Vladislaus, because it was the baptismal name of Jogaila, the Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland. The main altar features a painting portraying the death of St. Stanislaus, the patron of Vilnius Cathedral and the Bishop of Krakow. St. Stanislaus chastised the Polish King Boleslaw II the Bold for his cruelty and injustice, and eventually he excommunicated the King. In retaliation the King murdered St. Stanislaus during a Holy Mass. The painting was done by Pranciskus Smuglevicius, a famous Lithuanian artist.

    Look at the side chapels.
Worth seeing for the side altars alone. The one to the right of the entrance I believe is St Casimir and that is very impressive. The area behind the altar and the colour of the marble are particularly striking. The chapel on the other side of the church half way up has an interesting reliquary also. Myself I prefer the orthodox churches but this is admittedly very imposing.

Cathedral Basilica of St Stanislaus and St Ladislaus at a cathedral square in Vilnius
The Cathedral Basilica of St Stanislaus and St Ladislaus of Vilnius is located in the Old Town of Vilnius at the Cathedral Square, in the very center of the city, on the site of a former pagan temple and next to Vilnius defensive castle. This cathedral is the earliest established church in Vilnius, a symbol of Lithuanian baptism and it is the seat of the Archdiocese of Vilnius. The coronations of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania took place here. Many famous people of Lithuanian and Polish history are buried in the crypts and catacombs including Lithuania’s patron saint St. Casimir, Vytautas: a ruler of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and his wife Anna or the heart of the Polish King and Grand Duke of Lithuania Władysław IV Vasa, the rest of his body is buried in the Wawel Cathedral in Kraków. You can witness here various styles, including neoclassicism, and the earlier centuries are clearly visible in side chapels that feature various architectural styles which used to be popular in Lithuania. The lower half of the cathedral’s belfry is in fact a former defensive tower of the lower Vilnius Castle. Tiles of different colors mark the places on the square where the defensive wall used to stand. Next to the Cathedral The National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania is situated which is the 2nd most visited museum in Lithuania- 598 192 visitors (2019).

    Significant Cathedral of Vilnius
The cathedral has some interesting history because it was established while paganism was still very popular so when the king who built it died it became a place of pagan worship before becoming Christian again. You can check out artifacts from this time including a collection of pagan items at the nearby Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania Museum as well as royal artifacts from the crypts. We spent about 15 minutes inside the church just walking around and admiring the artwork and unique features. We would have spent more here because we were interested in seeing the crypts but we found out that these are only open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for English tours and a booking needs to be made in advance. We included the cathedral in a self guided walking tour of Vilnius because there are many attractions nearby. There are also many good restaurants to the south and east of the cathedral. Between the cathedral and bell tower there is a "miracle" tile where you can make a wish if you stand there or spin three times. This tile also marked the beginning of the human chain for the Baltic Way from Vilnius.

    Vilnius Cathedral
A spectacular church, a must-see in Vilnius Old Town. The outside looks like an ancient Greek Temple (you can get a better view of the decorations from the top of the Bell Tower). The inside is also good to see especially for the side altars and the chapel of St. Casimir. To get to see the Crypts of the Cathedral, you need to reserve a place on a guided tour from the Cathedral Bell Tower information desk.

We attended mass here on a Sunday night and were impressed by the large crowd. While we could not understand the language, we were fed by the beauty of the place. Being rebuilt in the classic style, there is not much of the past baroque influence. There is a special chapel, however, dedicated to the patron of the city. It is quite elaborate and worth the search.

Tall and wide, deep and spacious. Katedra is a lovely Greek-Roman classical exterior which has been built, rebuilt and rebuilt so many times that it's hard to point to one architectural style once seeing the whole story. Inside, the scope and size of the floor and ceiling gap is impressive. It's a large church, very large. I never treat it like a church though, spent too many years studying and attending such places to hallow or revere them. To me, its a public landmark for the community to appreciate. It is one of the most visible and famous symbols of the city and a must see for any traveler.

Popped in for a visit - and managed to gatecrash a wedding! But there were quite a few other tourists present and it’s clearly a common thing here as the priest didn’t bat an eyelid.
The cathedral interior is quite plain but the exterior is spectacular. The area around the altar is quite decorative and there is a chapel full of statues near the front entrance.

This shrine is a symbol of Lithuanian baptism. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Stanislaus and St. Ladislaus is built in the very centre of the city on the site of a former pagan temple and next to Vilnius’ defensive castle. The building currently reflects the Classicist style, but its walls have traces of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. Also next to it, there is another symbol of Vilnius - a 57-metre tall bell tower whose history takes back to the middle of the 13th century - the city’s oldest clock at the top of the tower chimes its bells to invite people to mass.

It is believed that a pagan temple has existed here at the foot of Castle Hill since ancient times. The Grand Duke of Lithuania Mindovg built the first temple here in the middle of the 13th century, but after returning to paganism the temple was lost. The Christian Church of St. Stanislaus was founded with the baptism of Lithuania in 1387 by the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Jagiello. Later, Grand Duke Vitovt and his wife were buried here. The temple was repeatedly burned and destroyed in wars. The building acquired its current classic appearance towards the end of the 18th century. Since then, three statues have risen above the façade: in the middle is St. Helena with a gilded cross, on the left is St. Stanislaus, and on the right is St. Casimir. During Soviet times, the sculptures were toppled, and the building housed an Art Gallery and a Concert Organ Hall. At the end of Soviet power, the temple was returned to Catholics. In modern times, the temple has been restored, the sculptures on the facade of the cathedral have been restored.

A neoclassical building. Unusual, as unusual is the tower of the bell tower detached from the cathedral. Nothing detracts from the fact that both buildings are beautiful. The 1783 cathedral has statues of Tommaso Righi on the outside. The tower has medieval foundations, but it is not well known what its original function was.

Probably one of the strongest symbols of Vilnius, the cathedral.

Beautiful, pure white coupled with its tower, the cathedral is in the heart of the city.

It is a must to visit with its chapel. I also advise you to come and attend Mass.

Construction that has changed its purpose over the centuries until it was consecrated as the Cathedral of the City.
Its façade recalls the temples of the Greco-Roman era in its grandeur and its large statues (that of Saint Anne with the cross overlooks the Cathedral itself)
Even the altar with its presbyteric recalls the shape of ancient temples.
The chapel of San Casimir is very beautiful.
The organ that rises above the entrance door is also impressive.
