- MN_WalkersMinneapolis, Minnesota618 contributionsA worthwhile visit, but not a typical palace. The castle itself isn’t all that impressive. It has been heavily renovated a number of times, was left as a ruin for years, almost demolished and then restored. It hosts the Slovakian national history museum which is pretty interesting, but that’s all there is to see inside. No period rooms, or furnishings, or things one often encounters in European castles. You can enter and walk through the castle grounds and gardens (which are very pleasant), enjoy beautiful views of the Danube and the city of Bratislava, and even enter the castle inner courtyard itself without any charge. There is an admission charge for the museum, which is the only way to get inside the rooms of the castle or to get up to the main tower. We thought that it was a worthwhile visit — particularly for the grounds and the views — and that the museum was interesting. If you walk to the castle from Old Town, the shortest way is up the steps which start on the other side of the bridge across from St. Martin’s Cathedral, but it’s a lot of steps. It’s a bit longer walk if you take the walk along the road that circles around the castle from the north (Zamoca) but that’s a gradual incline — not steps. There are WCs and a restaurant on the castle grounds. The museum took us about an hour. Walking the grounds and gardens was another 45 minutes.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 October 2023

You will see the river below, town and landscape from the castle. Them wander through the peaceful lanes. Enjoy a bit of shopping, a coffee, or a delicious meal! - CarolDM1900Montpelier, Vermont3,343 contributionsBest Views Over Bratislava -- Via Steep, Narrow StairsWe were last here a few years ago and found that experience mildly interesting but not exceptional. This time was very different. First of all, the whole place seemed brighter and more beautiful, with everything looking newly painted and polished up. Everything just gleamed. Secondly, the castle now offered a host of interesting and very well curated new exhibitions that featured high-quality English translations, among the best I've seen lately. Real effort appears to have been made to create displays that are appealing and understandable to the wide of visitors who walk the steep hill, hoping the end result will be worth it. Now, it definitely is. I have to add that one of the most charming experiences here was being able to walk through so many narrow, steep (whether up or down) "atmospheric" pathways to move around the castle. It was rather like a game: "hey, wonder where THIS one will take me?!." The big payoff came, of course, when we finally reached the top and saw the beautiful of castle turrets and the glorious views of old Bratislava opening beyond, all the way to high hills beyond the urban center. Among the exhibitions we saw, I found the small one with photos and biographies of Slovak partisan-patriots who died for their country to be very poignant and memorable. That, and all the gold: there is just heaps of it here, all very highly polished, a treat for both the eye and the imagination. If you are travelling with children, be assured that they are welcome here, and there is a small place, just for them, that I think they will enjoy.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023
- LovetravellingUnited Kingdom48 contributionsOk to visit but don’t expect a lot to do and see.Ok to visit while in Bratislava There is free entry to the Castle grounds and gardens and the view of the Danube but not too much there to do unless you pay a visit to the museum. It’s still worth the trip in my opinion. There are different routes to reach the castle either the reasonable steep one from the Historic district or the route bus which is less steep and takes you to the main entry.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 November 2023
- CatlynKTallinn, Estonia71 contributionsA good visitThe castle is an interesting visit and definitely recommend it. There is a lot about the history of Slovakia and Bratislava, interesting materials and a lot to see. One downside is that it could definitely use a more structured visit system (a route, for example) or better mapping. But otherwise, definitely worth a visit.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 November 2023
- Georgie TSunbury, United Kingdom412 contributionsIt's some climb but worth itWe were on a day trip from Vienna and the Flixbus stops conveniently at the base of the castle hill. Before you start the climb, you have to walk across the bus station to get to the footbridge which crosses the busy main road. Once on the other side, ignore the steps (unless you're fit!) and take the road to the left of the pretty yellow house. It's a fairly steep slope but nowhere near as bad as the steps. As you climb, there is a great view of the UFO Bridge crossing the Danube. Once you're through the gate you can again choose a set of zigzag stairs or a slope to walk up to the outer courtyard. The ticket office is on the right and is not that obvious on a bitterly cold day when they have the door shut! Once inside the castle, there is an attended cloakroom or just to the left in an alcove, there are lockers which you will need a Euro to operate but it is refunded. The first area has displays about the history of the castle and it's restoration. However the gorgeous white and gold staircases lead you to beautiful state rooms with collections of religious figures, nativity scenes and artifacts that have been found at the castle and it's environs. A trip up to the tower is yet another steep climb but worth it for the fine 360 degree views. Finally there are gardens and statuary but given the sub zero temperatures and a strong wind, we didn't linger.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 December 2023
- Alex GMaribor, Slovenia80 contributionsWorth a visit! Not just outside, also inside it’s cool!We walked to the castle on foot. Its like a 15 minute hike and its really nice. On the hill you can look around the castle for free. Inside you have to pay for the museum. If you have the bratislava card, the museum is included, so you don’t need to pay. Inside there are many interesting things to see - history of Slovakia…Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 29 December 2023
- steventhebeardLinslade, United Kingdom55 contributionsGive yourself plenty of time but worth itThe castle, it’s views and grounds were a really nice surprise in their splendour but I recommend you give yourself plenty of time as the castle is huge. I walked over several floors from underground foundations including Roman, to the top of one of the towers. The walkways were never ending with room after room to explore and several times not knowing if I was making my way round in any particular order however that said it was well worth the visit with some fascinating history!Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 16 January 2024
- Tony McMahonLondon, United Kingdom393 contributionsGo underneath the castle to see amazing ruinsOutwardly, the castle is mainly from the 17th century onwards but go inside and down into the basement and you encounter the medieval and even Roman ruins beneath. I was surprised that nobody else seemed to realise this. There's even traces of the Celtic fortress that was once here, destroyed by Roman legions. At ground floor level, it's a bit bland and that might put people off. They should rethink the exhibits to draw visitors in a bit more. The shop and cafe were closed, which was disappointing.Visited January 2024Travelled on businessWritten 27 January 2024
- Jem JLeighton Buzzard, United Kingdom287 contributionsSimply fabulousThis visit was a must and we weren't disappointed. Simply fabulous. We visited on a particularly cold and snow covered day. But I think that just made the experience even better. We didn't book a tour and just made our own way around, everyone was so helpful and friendly. We stopped in the little cafe while there and the hot chocolate is highly recommended. This landmark is a must if you visit Bratislava.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2024

The views from the castle are amazing and whilst the signs are somewhat confusing, we eventually found our way to the ticket office. It is relatively cheap to enter (€14 for myself and my daughter) there is plenty to do if you like art and exhibitions.
The first thing to mention is that the castle is effectively a reproduction as it was extensively rebuilt after falling into significant disrepair. It therefore has an odd “sterile” feel to it but much of main structure (including the amazing staircase - the largest baroque style one in Europe) is how it would have looked to the inhabitants. Much of the space is now made up of galleries and exhibitions with a smallish section set aside to cover Slovak antiquities. Many areas had artwork by modern Slovak artist.
For me the highlight was the section on the Velvet Revolution which I found to be exceptionally well done and very moving. I have travelled to Berlin a lot and this was a better (albeit much smaller) coverage of the events than the Checkpoint Charlie museums etc

Personally I have long felt Castles on hills are often more impressive from afar than up close. Bratislava Castle falls into this category. It is nice, though certainly not grandeur considering it once housed royalty but worth the visit on your travels. After all, Bratislava is a small city and you should certainly be able to cover most, if not all, of the main sites in a short weekend break.
The castle grounds are free to visit, including the Baroque Gardens which are well-kept but again, not fancy. Currently there is quite a bit of ground/restoration work with can spoil some views and photo opportunities a little. E sure to check ahead. While wandering the gardens be sure to take in the views over the old town and UFO-shaped SNP bridge, arguably the best spot to observe the sprawling neighbourhood south of the river and the modern developments going on in the eastern part of the city.

The museum was very big with lots of different topics. Not all of it is interesting but with the amount of exhibits you can skip the bits you don't find interesting. The staff were very friendly (the security guy checking tickets) and best of all the student price is less than half the full price :)

More of a museum here than a castle. (with entry fees)
Just the exterior of the castle grounds left, a small-ish castle compared to the likes of Scotland etc however looks great none the less.
Lots of building works taking place all over the grounds on the outer banks so beware of this. Worth a short walk up at least.

The castle looks stunning from the outside and the views are great from up the hill. The entry to the museum within the castle was only 4€ for a student so not bad. However the museum was very unorganised and confusing, and the castle itself has been renovated so has probably lost some of the charm it might have had. Wouldnt visit the museum again as it was quite disappointing but definitely go up to admire the city from up above!

I visited here and enjoyed it, but wouldn’t recommend it if you only have 2 or less days in Bratislava. It takes quite a while to get to, and is a hike up. If you’re not in good physical shape it would be difficult. For me, I’m not in the best shape and I was so out of breath. It was 35 degrees Fahrenheit outside and I had to take off my coat because I was so hot from walking up.
The view is incredible though, especially at sunset. The sun sets right over the river and it is absolutely stunning. The castle itself isn’t much to see, but the view of the city makes it worth it.

If you are in Bratislava, you can't miss this place. You can see stunning building from everywhere. It's only 10-15 min walk from town centre and it's worth the walk. Views from the castle are stunning, but castle itself not that impressive. There is a lot of work going on, so it's looks like a big building site. We only spend about 30 min there, but you also can visit museum and a restaurant located in the castle grounds if you wish.

We couldn’t go inside as it was closed due to Covid restrictions but we wandered around the outside enjoying the views of the old town and the river Danube. You can also cross the river for some good photos of the castle. One interesting point is they put symmetric gates on either side of the square at the front. The ones to he left however are on t(e edge of a small cliff so presumably guest they didn’t like exited this way!

The Castle is worth a visit. It’s a 10/15 minute ascent from the Old Town with several ways to access it (we preferred the stairs by the river side of the castle). It’s pleasant to walk around, though it was fully renovated in the 1950’s and ‘may’ have lost a little of its mystery/history. Sunset is a nice time to visit as you can look out of the City and the Danube and get some good photos

I can't imagine visiting Bratislava and not making a stop at the castle. In fact we would recommend this as a first stop as the views out over the city and the Danube are splendid and help one gain a perspective of the city. Being able to see both Austria and Hungary from the ramparts is particularly interesting. To hear our guide share her story of venturing into Austria when the Iron Curtain collapsed was eye-opening as she pointed out the close proximity of the city to the border. The castle is very clean and includes free restrooms (not something to take for granted when on the continent).

Hi Is there a place to store bags at the castle ? Thanks.

Yes there is paradise. It is immediately on entering. Bags coats can be left with a constantly supervised employee. Its free and is an excellent service. Recommended.

How high above the river is the castle
Written 2 September 2018
Sono circa ottocento metri a piedi, a seconda del giro che si fa. L'altezza non è tantissima ma sufficiente per una buona visione, direi circa 200 m di dislivello

High above the river with great views and I would take the word of the previous responder on the exact height.
There is public transportation to get there although we visited as part of an organised city tour. Walking there takes you up a steep hill

Hi, Pilot040402. What would you like to know about this attraction?
Hi there I was just wondering how long you would recommend staying in Bratislava?
I am also looking at doing the 'Grand city tour' through Viator which takes me to the castle with a half an hour tour I think :/ do you recommend this or have any advice on my trip to Bratislava
Look forward to chatting,
Cheers
