I loved the little town of Szentendre. It was a nice change from the bustle of Budapest. Our food at Karina restaurant was lovely, but we bought a chess set at the Marton Es Tarsa toy souvenir shop and were quoted a price. We walked away to discuss it and came back and said we would take it. I changed the color of the board.. same figures, same size, just red instead of brown. The man carved it for us and the woman helping him took the price tag off and wrapped it. When we got on the train, we realized he charged us almost twice what he said we could have it for. And he seemed so nice… beware and always check your receipt. It soured my entire experience with that town.

Take a bus/metro to Batthyany Ter in Buda. At the ticket office ask for same day return tickets for the H5 train to Szentendre, the end of the line. On Sat. 15 Sept. 2018, because there were disruptions on the H5 train line, we purchased return tickets by train & bus. It was a bit confusing hopping from train to bus, then from bus back to train to compete the trip to the town. We just followed the crowd….90% of our fellow passengers were going there too! Perhaps the H5 will provide non-stop connections when you go.
We were very happy we decided to take this break from sightseeing in Budapest. The shops and restaurants scattered along 5-6 streets are plentiful, have lower prices and more variety than we saw in Budapest: jewelry, clothing, art galleries, crystal, ceramics, handicrafts, antiques, household items, dolls, lace, embroidery, spices, liquor and wine, chocolates, marzipan and souvenirs. We opened our wallets and made many purchases. We left Budapest on the 10 am train and after visiting shops, restaurants, churches and museums, were back at about 5pm.
TIP1: Pay W/C located at the Info Office on the right as you enter town.
TIP2: Great gelato, only 300 HUF ($1.08) per scoop at Fagylatt Ice Cream in the white building at the end of the main square next to the church. Intense flavors for chocolate, mixed berry and lemon.
TIP3: Split a single classic Langos, fried bread w/cheese, sour cream and garlic spread, at Fantazia Langos just 1400 HUF (only $5) including 2 soft drinks. Turn right after the church, go down toward the Danube, you will see the small shop on the right just 100’ from the end.

Our tour group came by this little town after our Danube River Cruise with lunch and it was about a good 30 mins drive from the city. This was an optional tour (where each one of us had to top up another 35 Euro to come here for a 1.5 hour visit) and at the end of the tour, most of us felt that it was not worth to pay 35 Euro to come here (maybe 20 Euro would sound more reasonable).
This hungarian little town is famed for its handicraft, paintings and art craft and true enough most of the shops here on both sides of the pathway, besides selling some Hungarian souvenirs and gift items, were mostly selling handmade products like handicraft, wood crafts and structures, paintings, magic wooden boxes besides a number of shops selling crystal or jewelry items. Well, on the day of our visit, quite a number of shops were not opened. It was sunny and unless you were in a shop, there wasn't a place for you to shield from the sun or the rain should it drizzles.
First impression? Open or makeshift markets in any centre square!
As we walked into the town from where our coach was parked, bear in mind that the footpaths were made with rocks and so it was quite difficult to walk. Be careful too.
As our guide told us, shops inner in the town would be selling more expensive than those in the front for similar product items which we disbelieved initially. It was much later that when we started comparing prices, true enough and the price difference could simply be more than 5-10 Euro at least! So buy the items you want at the front shops.
As we walked deeper into the town (somehow like tracking as we realized we were walking uphill), we came by some cafes, restaurants, candy shops (with a museum inside which unfortunately we did not have the time to visit and was also chargeable). There was also a small fountain and a church in the center of the town and explanation of them were provided by our guide.
It was quite crowded when we arrived as we saw big groups of Chinese and Korean tourists, speaking loudly as they walked or when bargaining for prices.
It was a touristry place where most of the products you see here could be found elsewhere in the city and perhaps even cheaper. Like I mentioned earlier, unless you are into handicraft or arts, there is really nothing much to see or do here.
Perhaps only the shophouses and some buildings here were quite unique, decorated with lovely flowers gave us a feeling of being "out of city" and "proximity to the rural area", made us feel less pressurized and peaceful!
And definitely not worth for us to spend so much to come here as we could go elsewhere for sightseeing or shopping that offer better enjoyment and satisfaction.
Can skip it and you will not lose anything or miss much in Budapest for sure even without visiting this place!

If you love to shop then a visit to Szentendre is a must. It is a quaint town which boasts an abundance of excellent stores all selling local arts and crafts. The prices are reasonable. You can purchase beautiful jewellery in a wide variety of styles. Hats, scarves, coats and handbags. Local pottery, glassware and exquisite linen. There is a Marzipan Museum and of course Paprika in all forms and packaging. There is also a man who makes intriguing secret boxes. I could go on and on. Just don't forget your credit card.

The square is a symbol of the sad, poor state of rural Hungary. The streets are lined with stores and stalls of trinkets and paprika, staffed by staring, smoking men and women without sparkle. The place is a hopeless, dusty tourist trap. I can’t speak for whatever attractions may exist in the town because our tourist bus gave us little time. A blessing, I think.

I really loved the main square, and it is really nice in New Year's eve (they have a huge Christmas tree). Lots of little souvenir shops, and it is great to walk along the Danube. Don't forget to buy and try some marzipan!

Not just the square but the whole of the village center and the riverside is a lovely place to spend a summer afternoon. Lots of window shopping, plentiful places to eat, and several places to get a good ice cream. Don't miss taking the tiny alley up to the hilltop church square where you can visit the Serbian church.

I would love to stay here for a long weekend! It is charming, beautiful and has lots of fabulous artists selling their work. I had a smile on my face for the hour that I was here! Just a neat little village!
