Esztergom is the seat of the Hungarian Catholic Church this is where the Sate - the Kingdom of Hungary was established in 1000AD by king Stephen (thus it become the Royal Seat for two centuries) - who was later Canonised by the pope - hence he become King Saint Stephen. The current population of Esztergom is approximately 25,000. It is... More

A beautiful cathedral we saw on a Danube Bend day trip out of Budapest. The most beautiful view of it was when you went over the bridge to Slovakia and saw it from a distance over the river.

Home of the mother church (Catholic) of Hungary and where St. Stephen was crowned in 1000. The current building dates back to the 19th century. Very impressive. The treasury upstairs was filled with all sorts of artifacts that must be worth millions. All I could think of is the good that would come from using at least some of the... More

The 'headquarters' of the catholic church in Hungary, a most impressive structure with great acoustics. As handsome as the building is - it is even more grand if you take the time to drive across the bridge and take a look from the Slovakian side.

The rain was pouring down, but we made it to this huge church, imposingly set on castle hill. If you're looking for dignified serenity, this won't be your place of choice. The massive grey pillars inside and out set the tone. The slabs of red basalt and dull red marble occupied the eye all around. Massive frescoes photographed convincingly, but... More

Nothing prepared me for the scale of this Basilica; it is vast. Do visit the crypt if you have time because it houses the tomb of Cardinal Mindszenty who inspired many people of my generation because of his opposition to Communism in Hungary and for his pains endured 16 years of asylum in the American Embassy in Budapest. The position... More

We bought a ticket, not just to the basilica but to also see the treasury, go up to the cupola, the panoramic room and the crypt. I enjoyed every aspect of all of it. Being able to walk around the outside of the copula was great. Fantastic view of the Danuabe on one side and the town and countryside on... More

Larger than the Basillica in Budapest. All of the special occasion Masses are held here (not in Budapest) The Treasury has fabulous items on display, but none of the descriptions are in English. You can view bullet holes in some of the paintings in the sanctuary. They have been preserved from WW II Alter has the largest water color picture... More
