One of many churches of this era making up the Eger skyline, this church is worth peeking in. It is not as cheerful inside as the basilica but that does not make the art not worth admiring. In contrast with churches in many places, entry is free and worth exploring.

Located in Dobó Square the church really does have beautiful frescos. No entrance fee and only a handful of people walking around on the Sunday morning we visited. There are limited signs in English and I suspect a tour would have added to our experience. Recommended.

...like all Catholic churches in Hungary, it seems. This one has an incredibly ornate altar and intricately decorated images all over.

Minorita Templom (a.k.a. Minorite Church or Saint Antony of Padua Church) is on Dobó István Square (Eger's main square). The Franciscan Order of monks built a church in central Eger in the 13th century. Out of humility they refer to their order as lesser or “minor” in Latin, hence the name Minorite. The church was converted into a Mosque during the Turkish occupation (1596-1687). When the Turks were expelled, the General of the Imperial forces gave the church back to the Franciscan order. The church was rebuilt (architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer) and dedicated to Saint Antony of Padua in 1771. It is a fine examples of a Baroque church, both inside and out. The main entrance is flanked by pairs of Corinthian columns, and the curved pediment is inscribed, "For God nothing is enough". The inside is gilded and flamboyantly decorated with columns, paintings, statues and an intricately carved main alter. Ceiling frescoes depict scenes from the life of Saint Anthony. The main alter picture illustrates Saint Anthony's vision of the Virgin Mary floating on clouds, holding baby Jesus in her arms. On the eastern side of the church is Saint Hedvig Secondary Girl Hostel, and on the western side the Town Hall. The church is open daily with no entry fee, although a donation of 300 HUF is suggested. There are daily masses.

A fine example of baroque churches in Hungary or Central Europe. It can be easily found in the heart of the city.

An average Hungarian Baroque church. If at Dobo square worth to go in and take a look. Beautiful fresco.

While the outside of this "church on the main square" was well maintained, the interior looked a tad shabby. That being said, it was a joy to sit in a pew and relax. One of the ceiling frescos reflects the church's patron saint preaching to fish. Made us smile. Although here is a donation box, there is no charge to enter. Refreshing.

A good place to see some pretty church decorations. Not as impressive as the Basilica though, much smaller and because of that has a nice, humbler atmosphere.

Very hard to get to because of construction. Key to finding is it park your car and go walk to square as cannot reach church by road. Magnificent altar and artwork. You will not be disappointed! We'll worth your time.
