Top ways to experience Jewish Quarter
The area
Neighbourhood: District VII / Jewish Quarter
District VII is the very heart of Budapest and houses the city’s Jewish Quarter. Its streets are lively and colorful, its buildings narrate different histories in an assortment of architectural styles, and its cafes and bars are frequented and loved by the enthusiastic crowds. Grand and magnificent, the striking star of the district is the Great Synagogue, the largest in Europe and one of the biggest in the world. Distinctly Moorish in style, crowned by the twin onion shaped domes, the Synagogue is the very emblem of District VII and one of the main attractions in the capital.

We stayed a few blocks away and found ourselves going here every day and night as we passed through to other parts of the city. This is where the bulk of bars and restaurants are located, and where people go after dark. We always felt safe, definitely check out a few of the ‘ruin’ establishments in the area. Fun neighborhood.

We visited Jewish quarter on a hot weekday morning in August. Started from Synagogue where they asked 25 euro per person for the ticket ( 50 for us as a couple) extremely high in my opinion. World class monuments ( Acropolis) ask for less . We did not enter . We walked in the narrow streets of the quarter following a proposed, from a reliable site, walk route. Nothing really exciting , dirty , places smelled in many cases, no atmosphere. I do not know what happens during the night probably it gets better and vivid . Strongly not recommended during the day in a city like Budapest with so many beautiful places and sites to visit .

There are two different aspects of the Jewish Quarter - the historical aspect and the eating/drinking part. I liked both. If you are interested in the history of the area I would highly recommend a guided tour of some sort - otherwise you will miss many hidden treasures. The Dohány Street Synagogue is a must see - second largest synagogue in the world with the history behind it. If you're not interested in the history, it's a hopping place for restaurants, shopping and drinking. Lots of "Ruin" bars (trendy and fun) as well as specialty bars for polinka, vodka and craft beers.

We have stayed in Jewish Quarter and we loved it. There is always something to do depending on the individual preferences. There are street arts, small parks, synagogues, many shops including the ones working 0-24 or very late and of course the ruin pubs. The district is famous for its nightlife although you don't have to be a clubber to enjoy the area. If I ever back to Budapest, I'd love staying in Jewish Quarter again.

Budapest's Jewish Quarter also known as District VII is an amazing blend of history and tradition and also provides for some of the most energetic nightlife that you will find in the city. You will find here the beautiful Doheny Street Synagogue built in the 1850s in a Moorish Revival style and it is the largest synagogue in Europe. However, this is also the neighborhood to find Budapest's famed "ruin pubs" that have been created from old, abandoned buildings. It's a hip scene with the perfect combination of grit and style. The first and most famous of the ruin pubs in SzimplaKert which is well worth experiencing. However, there are many other options including Mika Kert which is a laid-back beer garden creating a great ambience.

One of Budapest's smallest neighbourhoods, and in our opinion the go to place for visitors, lovely narrow streets to walk down, many restaurants cafes and markets to enjoy.
Places to see:
Dohany street Synagogue
Szimple Kert, Budapest's first Ruin bar, weekends it opens as a market.
Street art and murals
Gozsdu Udvar, (courtyard), a long stretch of bars and restaurants, a market of weekend.
There are plenty more sights these are just to name a few

Aaron our guide was from Budapest and was extremely knowledgeable about his country. The tour and his insights gave us a lot of history and details you wouldn’t have found out by just walking around without a group. The people in the group asked lots of questions and Aaron was great. Definitely book yourselves on one.

An amazing piece of Budapest both historically and to simply walk the streets. There is so much history here and recommend joining one of the walking tours.
We used Guru Walking Tours - Aaron was our guide for the WW2 Jewish History tour. EPIC! Aaron was SO knowledgeable and passionate about the area.
If you're a history buff or simply love good food and want to see an interesting part of Budapest this is the place. Night life abounds as well!

Lovely place to go and see.
Lot's of history.
Bit expensive to get in.
It was closed on the Saturday so we walked around it looking in.
Lovely looking building.
Lot's of restaurants and bars around to visit.

Budapest had a thriving and prosperous Jewish community before the end of World War II, and for most of the war, the Hungarian government was able to keep Nazi Germany out of the country and Hungarian Jews and other minorities safe. However, the last year of the war, the Hungarian Nazi party took over the government and in one year did as much proportional damage as the German Nazis did in the previous 12 years in Germany and the rest of Europe. The Budapest Ghetto is reviving, though, with reminders of its old past and the hard times it went through. A big part of it is street art, murals on the walls on otherwise nondescript buildings. Walk through this neighborhood. It is a testament to the resilience of the human race.
