It's a great statue near Vajdahunyad Castle. The design makes it far more striking than many other statues in Budapest which are designed with beauty in mind, whereas this, has a completely different feel. No less beautiful in its own way, but no other statue made me uncomfortable haha

An unusual bronze statue made by Miklós Ligeti, near the Agricultural Museum, in the City Park. It is difficult to take a picture alone, as it is surrounded by tourists who want to pass the pen for luck. Anonymus lived in the twelfth century (his true identity is unknown) and wrote the chronicle Gesta Hungarorum (Hungarian works).

Tucked away in City Park, this cloaked figure is both eerie and captivating. No face, no identity—just this shadowy figure holding a pen, and somehow, it pulls you right in. There’s something about it that feels ancient, like a ghost of history just standing there waiting to spill secrets.

You walk up to it, and it’s like you’re in the presence of something bigger than you, something timeless. Tourists come and go, but this statue? It stands there with that mysterious aura, not giving anything away. The legend says touching the pen will give you writing genius. Now, whether that’s true or not, I’ll leave it up to you, but it adds a cool little twist to the experience.

It’s simple, yet powerful. Definitely worth the stop if you’re strolling through the park.

Very popular photo motif in the capital of Hungary.
The statue of Anonymous is a bronze sculpture by the Hungarian sculptor Miklós Ligeti from 1903. It ‘honours’ the hitherto unknown author of the Gesta Hungarorum, a chronicle of the Magyars from their settlement in the Danube Plain in 896 to the Middle Ages. It shows Anonymous as a hooded figure with a book in one hand and a pen in the other, and is located in front of Vajdahunyad Castle, a historical complex that houses the Agricultural Museum and the Museum of Decorative Arts.

The statue of Anonymous, 1.9 meters high, is located in the Vajdahunyadvár area of Városliget, opposite the gate of the Agricultural Museum, and has been completed since 1902. The life of the modeled Hungarian historical figure is still full of unknown places. He is bound to Béla.

Cool monument. He turned out to be very eloquent, even a little sinister. I became interested, and at the same time I learned that Anonymous is not only a common noun.
And about the fulfillment of desires for those who rubbed their pens - this is at the level of a joke. I don’t think anyone takes these “signs” seriously. It’s just such a tourist tradition, in every city you rub something))

Love Budapest. My 3rd trip there and highly recommend. This was my first to this park where I came across a statue called Anonymus. At first I thought it was the Grim Reaper because the face is shrouded and dark and hard to see. But evidently it is a scribe from the 11th century and the statue was sculpted in 1907. I took several photos but my favorite is the close up of his face under his shroud. Attached.

It is located in the Vaindahuniand Castle there in the park. She is holding a pen and our guide told us that the legend says if you touch it you will learn the secrets of the one you love. I read elsewhere that it's luck.. Whenever everyone says something different..

This rather sinister statue is my favorite in the park. It is of the most widely quoted person in the world.

The real Anonymous lived in the 12th century and his true identity is fittingly unknown, but he is believed to have been a notary of Béla III of Hungary, who wrote the chronicle Gesta Hungarorum (Deeds of the Hungarians).

Arriving in Vajdahunyad Castle you can not, not see three beautiful statues. Especially Art aficionados could enjoy the sculptures of Winston Churchill and George Washington. Both, surprisingly, made it through the Cold War unscathed. But the most famous statue is the statue of a monk, sculpted in 1903 by Miklós Ligeti. Very little is known about this monk whose name is even unknown, so he is now referred to as Anonymus (Latin for anonymous). This mysterious monk lived in the twelfth century as the notary of King Béla III. He is credited as the writer of the first book of the Hungarians, the 'Gesta Hungarorum'. Touching the monk's stylus is supposed to bring good luck with your studies. It is amazing. You can feel its strength. Valuable visit.
