Top ways to experience Gellert Hill
The area
Neighbourhood: Gellért Hill
If you want to treat your camera to some amazing scenery, Gellért Hill is a must on your itinerary. A funicular journey from the Chain Bridge along the hillsides provides a fast connection between Buda and Pest, hoisting visitors to panoramic vistas. Once on top of the hill, you’ll find the Citadel dominate the landscape with its imposing 19th century construction, a site that’s hard to keep your eyes on without being distracted by the phenomenal view over the Danube and the eight bridges crossing. Once on Gellért Hill however, one mustn’t miss the famous Gellért Baths. Budapest is renown for its thermal waters and its baths, and the Gellért Baths are housed in an impressive art nouveau structure. Its interior design, with its many mosaics, recalls the preceding relationships the city has had with healing springs and saunas, traditionally used within this neighborhood since the Ottoman Empire.

- GCKJANebraska649 contributionsLovely views of Budapest from Gellért HillWhile the Citadel is currently closed (2023) the path leading up Gellért Hill is accessable and the views are absolutely worth the hike. It's best to take your time and bring water. It's not difficult, the path is paved and there are some stairs. Be sure to take your time and bring water. We like to start at the Gellért hotel, go up to the Citadel, and then down to the waterfall.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 October 2023
- RobertBudapest, Hungary13 contributionsBeautiful placeYou must go up here if you haven't tried it yet. Currently (January, 2024) the Citadella fortress and its area including the statue of liberty is closed due to reconstruction. You can still walk around, or explore the narrow paths around the mountain in the nature, while having a beautiful view of the city. If you don't want to climb, you can take bus nr. 27 from Móricz Zsigmond körtér. You may explore here the Garden of Philosophists, the waterfall, the cave temple, or have a good coffee or ice cream at Fuge delicat shop.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 4 January 2024
- Rob29 contributionsAmazing views! The views are absolutely amazing! It can be quite a climb up the hill and steps, so if you have any mobility issues this could be tricky. If you can make it to the top it is worthwhile. The citedella is currently closed for maintenance so you are unable to see this. Not sure how long these will continue for, so best check I advance. At the bottom of the hill, there is a place to get a well earned drink or ice cream after.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 August 2024
- Tinkabell48Porthmadog, United Kingdom64 contributionsGreat views, shame about the rubbish. The views are amazing from the top, a reward for the slog up the steps and pathways. The citadel itself was sadly closed off due to renovation work but we were still able to enjoy the vista above Budapest. The one disappointment was the amount of rubbish strewn around the area considering it's a UNESCO site. There were cigarette butts, plastic cups, general rubbish all around and some tissue paper clearly used by visitors 'caught short' without a toilet. Surely if it's a heritage site then it should be cared for and maintained, not utilised as a rubbish dump for people too lazy to carry their own rubbish back down with them. The situation is not helped by the overflowing bins that had not been emptied by the local authorities. There was a general feeling of neglect which was a shame for a site that has the potential to be a more enjoyable experience.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 August 2024

There is no doubt that the view from the hill is breathtaking and you can admire the whole city. However, you can admire a similar view from Buda Castle without spending time and effort reaching the hill. The statue is beautiful but you can probably admire it from the bottom of hill as well. Be careful of the tourist trap that some men have set - one man will encourage you to play a similar to three-card Monte and he will make you feel that you will win. However, I noticed that some people from the crowd around him they work with him to try to put pressure to tourists to bet a lot of money. AVOID HIM ! I witnessed some tourists losing a lot of money!

The walk up to Liberty Monument at the top of Gellért Hill does require an above average level of fitness but it’s well worth it. Take it slowly and stop numerous times to admire the emerging view! There are a variety of different paths to get to the top especially if you want to avoid too many steps! We were lucky to get there at sunset; the colours were beautiful as were the views both up the Danube to the Parliament Building and down to the new National Theatre and beyond. We came up one side of the hill (from Elizabeth Bridge) and headed down the other side to Liberty Bridge which the extensive network of pathways allowed you to do very easily. Well worth the effort of the walk up and it would be just as spectacular during the daytime as well

Gellért Hill is the place to go for the best panoramic views of Budapest. From the top, you get unrivaled views the Danube river and both sides of the city- Buda and Pest. Depending on where you are in the city, one of the best to go there is by taxi and have the taxi driver wait while you explore, take in the views, and take amazing photographs. It's also worth a visit as it is listed as by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

To say reaching the top in 30 degrees of afternoon heat and humidity was a trek would be an understatement. To say I was more than delighted that I did, would also be an understatement. The views are spectacular. The views are spectacular. Panoramic. There is an energy about this place that is hard to explain. It almost feels like you become revitalised after every viewing point.

I was just walking down the street and we stumbled onto this hill by accident! The sights are breathtaking and its certainly an experience i wont forget! Its a little bit steep but its not too strenuous . The day we went it began to rain very heavily so we managed to hop on one of the red tour buses. Even despite the weather we had a great time. I would definitely recommend visiting!

Excellent view but was a bit disappointed to find that after a steep 30 minute hike the monument was closed/blocked off due to construction works. There were no warnings about this at the start (or at any point) of the hike. The view was still worth it though, just don’t expect to get close to the statue until the construction works are complete.

What a fun hike!! Given, it’s a little slippery after the rain, not recommended for people with mobility issues. But you do get a nice viewpoint of the city and all it’s nice sights. There’s even a small playground half way up!!! We went when the top of the citadel was closed due to construction so that was a major bummer but the views of the city makes up for it.

A steady incline walk to the top was greeted by building work and scaffolding, which caused an anti-climax as the monument was not open. It is however, a rewarding experience to reach the (almost) summit and see the skyline view of the city but I would say if you wanted a better higher view and something more to do at the top, you'll have to wait until it's actually open.
There are no actual directions so just choose a path that suits you as all of them lead to the top.

From the dropoff point it is still a hike to the top. The top is crowned by the Hungarian Statue of Liberty but its the views from the top that impress. The view is stupendous. This is a must stop if you want good photo memories.

Lovely views from up here. This is on the Buda side of the river.
The hop on /off buses stop here for 30 mins so you can walk up and take photos so if you’ve already seen it just get off your bus and get on the one at the front as that will be leaving soon!
There are a few places to get a hot / alcoholic drink at the top near the statue.
Definitely worth a look.

Is it possible to drive up? Is there any parking area? If yes, what's the fee?
Written 8 July 2018
Yes, you can drive most of the way up. There is a moderate-sized parking area that can get very congested due to tour buses etc., but the spots turn over relatively quickly.

What is the elevation at the top of Gellert Hill?
Written 14 January 2018
Yes it is worth it. Everything in Budapest is worth it. Some of our best pics are from up there.
If you are fit enough you will be able to climb the steps, just take your time. Lovely views all the way.
We are both nearly 60 and walked everywhere in Budapest, we did not want to miss anything.
The only time we used transport was too and from the airport.
Budapest is fantastic.
We would go back.
Enjoy!

What is the elevation of Gellert Hill
Written 14 January 2018
Not sure exactly a guess over 200 metres. I paced it walking up on the footpaths and it took what seamed like an hour, but I did take in the views on the way. Get the Berlitz guide book to Budapest as it gives tons of information.
