About
The history of Hungary and its people through the ages is covered in many magnificent exhibits and works of art. Count Ferenc Széchényi, one of Hungary’s most eminent aristocrats offered his collection of books, maps and medals for the benefit of hisbeloved country in 1802. His example had been followed by many- the Palatine himself, aristocrats, citizens, fellow Hungarians and even some counties! What we call today the Hungarian National Museum had evolved from these donations. The construction of one of the most beautiful classicist palaces of Hungary began in 1837 based on the plans of Mihály Pollack. By 1846, exhibitions had beensetup in the building. On 15th March 1848 the revolutionary youth of the era declared its ideas of freedom from the stairs of the museum. These ideas then formed the basis of societal reforms and modernisation taking place in Hungary.

- heath19 contributionsBuilding is amazingThe building was amazing but it was lacking in the world war 2 information. Also found the guards stood in front of the exhibitions which was awkward. Really enjoyed the silver with the Greek mythology but that’s personal preference.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 March 2024
- Sparkles207 contributionsBeautiful building and wonderful displaysWe loved our visit to this Museum. It’s an incredibly stunning building both inside and out. The information is displayed both in Hungarian and English and takes you through the history of Hungary. It is in not too much detail so it is enjoyably digestible: you don’t feel like your head will explode by the end like it does in some museums. We also loved the idea the more unusual way it was laid out and displayed - maybe focusing on the more unknown parts or highlighting things you may not know about. We loved the 1848 area and the bit about Soviet occupation and post that era. The coronation mantle is also beautiful to see in all its glory. There is also reduced ticket prices for adults travelling with children.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 March 2024
- MN_WalkersMinneapolis, Minnesota618 contributionsWell organized museumVery high quality museum. The exhibits give you a walk through the history of Hungary and the peoples of the Carpathian Basin from the earliest known residents through the fall of the Communist regime. It was interesting to learn about all of the different peoples who migrated through this area. There is also an impressive exhibit on silver. Very good English explanations throughout. We spent about two and a half hours.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 April 2024
- greatxpectationsDarwen, United Kingdom184 contributionsLearned a lot about the History of the formation of HungaryPre booked and printed paper tickets so didn’t have to queue at entrance. Interesting communist era rooms with typical living quarters under that regime. Most interesting for us was the history of the creation of the Magyar Hungarian people of whom we knew very little. Typical museum with cloakroom which is free with a nice cafe area close by . Easy to findVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 April 2024
- Bill F23 contributionsA pleasant surpriseI selected this as a "time-filler" option for our family vacation in Budapest and we used it on a rainy day. I get "museumed out" easily so didn't have high expectations but I was very pleasantly surprised. We took it causally and just wandered through the galleries and read displays that caught our eye. Its very well laid out and easy to navigate and digest. The displays and artifacts are interesting and we ended up covering all the rooms over the course of about an hour. The docents were weird about our jackets for reasons I don't understand (they didn't speak English and we don't speak Hungarian) but they wanted us to either wear our jackets (it was a bit hot in there) or check them at for free at the basement cloak room, which we did... I'd recommend you just do that at the onset as they had invited us to do when we bought our tickets. Anyway, at only 3500 HUF (about $9.50) for (more for the special exhibitions), it's a good value and a nice option to kill an hour on a rainy day.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 May 2024
- MarineLille, France46 contributionsReally interesting place to discover Hungarian historyAt first, I only wanted to see the building, and then I decided to go inside and see if I could see some exhibitions. I got a ticket, and it was definitely worth it; quite cheap for the amount of things you get to see, and it was truly interesting! The building from the inside is also quite spectacular, and you can take all the time you want to visit each room. I learned a lot about Hungary and its culture. Once you're done, you can enjoy the park surrounding the building, which is free, and allows you to rest a bit, with several benches in the shade. It's quite peaceful. If you buy the ticket on the machine, don't hesitate to ask the receptionist for additional information about which collections you're allowed to visit; they should give you a pamphlet with a map that will be quite useful. Also, most of the important elements are translated in english, so don't be too worried about this. Just a warning: backpacks are not allowed except if they are really small, so do go to the wardrobe to leave it here before starting your visit. I wasn't given this information by the receptionist, which led to an extremely awkward five minute conversation with an employee trying to use google translation to make me understand this (it wasn't his fault at all, it just made me anxious and made the beginning quite rocky, nothing bad).Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 2 July 2024
- familytraveler5926 contributionsDon’t wait on line use ticket machinesI liked the museum but it could be much better. First of all, if there is a line, use ticket machines to the right before the desk. Poor signage means people wait on line when they don’t have to. Start on the main floor to the right by the cafe. I think many people miss this important part of the museum. Again not great signs. This starts with pre-historic artifacts and continues with artifacts from the various tribes that inhabited Hungary. Each room has a paragraph about who the new invaders are but the descriptions aren’t great. FYI if you are hot, this is the only area with good AC. This section ends with king Steven’s conversion to Christianity. Then proceed upstairs for the bulk of the museum. Ending with the Soviet era. End back on the main floor where you go into a closed room to see the coronation mantle. I wish this museum had a good audio tour it would make it much better.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 August 2024
- FrankieNew Milton, United Kingdom31 contributionsFascinating exhibits, but a staff member made me leave a room before I’d viewed the artThe building itself is beautiful and the exhibits are fascinating. I found the layout very easy to navigate and found most of the staff were friendly enough, but one older gentleman was very rude to me. After going around one exhibit I came out into a room with a few paintings so I went to walk around this room and view the paintings but this member of staff pointed at the door and said it’s that way. I explained I wanted to look at the art and he said no and pointed at the door again. After visiting the fine arts museum yesterday and encountering plenty of rude staff I wasn’t surprised, but I was upset. I guess it just baffles me that despite having paid for the full pass, I was made to leave a room without being able to view the art. It is a shame how negative experiences such as that can taint the overall experience of the museum.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 15 September 2024
- outofedinburghEdinburgh, United Kingdom70 contributionsLots of beautiful exhibits. We came here on a wet day and it was the ideal place to spend a few hours. It’s a beautiful building with well laid out exhibits that detail Hungarian history from very early on until the fall of communism. Lots of beautiful and interesting objects as well as easy to follow information. We did almost miss the Coronation Mantle as it is behind a closed door to keep it in good condition. The staff member was very happy to let us in to see, we just had to ask! And don’t miss the Roman exhibits in the basement, really interesting to see.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 September 2024

Visited the museum recently. Firstly, I want to say that the actual collection is good, the interior is pretty and you do learn about Hungarian history. However, I definitely would not visit again because it has some of the worst staff ever in a museum I've visited. The first issue was the main entrance was closed (which is fine as long as it is clear where to go in instead) but there was literally no signage outside the museum on where to go and no staff were able to help us. Eventually we found a side door which apparently was the temporary entrance (but said staff only on it which was confusing) and then went on a trek through the museum trying to find the ticket desk which was signposted but rather confusingly so we mistook the cloak room for the ticket desk (up the stairs to the left if you were confused like we were. Once we did eventually find the ticket desk the man on it was incredibly rude. He didn't say hello back or smile and when we tried to pay he just kept rolling his eyes as if it was a massive annoyance for him. He gave us our tickets and turned away, no offer of any information about where we should go or any galleries that were available. Most of the other staff around the museum were similarly miserable. This ruined the experience for us so would recommend to people to give this museum a miss unless you don't mind feeling really unwelcome.

It was the 1° time I was intimidated in a museum. They failed to inform at the ticket desk that a exclusive ticket to take pictures was necessary. My visit was going well until the security guard approached me. What an embarrassing situation.
It was possible to buy this complement, yes. However, I was at the second floor, my wallet in the underground cloakeoom and the ticket desk at the ground floor. Why bother.
I just lost interest in what the museum was showing. Dear Museum directors please train your staff better or include the photo ticket in the total price.

I came here to get my history fix during my visit to Budapest. I saw it on recommended on Lonely Planet stating it gave a wide range of Hungarian History all the way up to the end of Communism. When we arrived, there was no clear instruction on where to go. After asking the first desk we saw, we were told the prices of 1450 HUF for Students and sent to the cashier desk. We were met by a rude cashier man. Who didnt even greet us as we walked up to the desk. After a short discussion with little words exchanged. He informed us we couldn’t have a student ticket as we were English. Where he referred to us as the words ‘Brexit’ and ‘Non-European’. We didnt query this too much and happily paid the adult price of 2900 HUF. But were overall upset about the poor customer service and poor manners of the cashier who could have dealt with our situation much better and friendlier. Once in the museum we felt very watched, with multiple security guards and museum staff following us from room to room. With one even questioning our nationality in a distasteful manner as if we were causing a problem for them. Along with this, they continuously asked for our tickets in majority of rooms we entered despite the museum mostly operating in a one way system thus meaning theres no way we could have entered without tickers previously. Overall, our experience felt very uncomfortable, unwelcoming and untrusting.
On the other hand, as a history student who specialises in 20th century Eastern Europe I found the early history very interesting with an amazing variety of artefacts. However, the 20th century history felt twisted and covered up with interesting takes on the events and build up to WW2 and I couldn’t see much on the Hungarian uprising! To add to this you had to pay extra for the permission to take photos so left with nothing to show for our visit.
For the price you pay this could be an amazing experience and informative but unfortunately our experience was made difficult and uncomfortable because we were British despite us showing a genuine interest into the Hungarian history and culture.

The museum itself is worth the visit. Lots to see, great history, fascinating and educational. What was unclear to me was the rule regarding photography. There was a separate photography pass which I understood as tripods/handheld cameras (there were many, many people with tripods). There are some amazing artifacts in there (a piano belonging to Beethoven, etc). For about half the experience, I was able to take pics with my cell no problem. In the second half, I was followed around by an attendant who 1.) made me wear my coat (I had taken it off because I got warm about half way through/some rooms are cold some are warm, etc) and 2.) told me I couldn't take any pictures with my phone without the photo pass ticket....so, that was weird.

We brought Budapest cards so we could access most visitors sights. A large number of displays were being updated so you could only access selected areas. All areas had a large focus on stone work that was discovered. This is not an area I have interest in and the whole museum has stone works displayed in each exhibition.

We bought the tickets, and tried to leave our coats to the cloakroom, but the lady working there was extremely rude, and started yelling at us in Hungarian, which we did not understand. We tried to go upstairs to ask someone who speaks English for help, and we were told that "this is Hungary, we speak Hungarian". The problem itself wasn't big, but the way they handled it was awfully rude, wouldn't expect someone yelling at me in a national museum. After this we didn't want to stay, so we left and paid for nothing. So do not expect them to speak English or be helpful.

In short, this is a worthwhile museum with great exhibits and artefacts. The only thing that put us off was the uninviting mood from the young woman selling tickets. She blamed us for not telling her which tickets we wanted, then sulked as she changed the tickets (she assumed that because we are tourists, that would wouldn't want to see the special exhibitions and firstly charged us for the permanent collection). She also didn't tell us that if we wanted to take photos, we would need a permit. So we ended up having to go back to her after we dropped our bags off ... And again, we wasted time in line, which is saying something when the line was really short and we were in it for close to 20 min. This was on a Saturday, so perhaps she was just in a bad mood ... which sadly she put my husband and I in too.

We decided to "take refuge" in the museum given the freezing cold, we had read on the internet that the entrance fee was around 5 euros. Unfortunately this was not the case, the cost for the complete visit was around 15 euros, 10 euros for the other 2 exhibitions, one temporary and one permanent.
We chose the permanent for 10 euros, which told the story of Hungarian history with historical relics.
Unfortunately no audio guide was available, the captions of the objects were only in English or Hungarian. The museum officials did not speak English, only Hungarian or German, so it was not possible to communicate.
I would have really liked to have an audio guide to be able to hear the various stories in Italian.
We found the cost excessive for the quality of the visit.

The national museum is worth a visit as it has some very interesting exhibits including a large collection of Roman tombstones.
However, most of the staff didn't seem to have much, if English and were quite rude. There were no floor plans available and we almost missed the Roman section, we only spotted it as we went to collect our bags. As we came out we realised we had missed an entire floor out due to the lack of floor plans and signs.
I normally enjoy visiting the national museum but found this one less enjoyable. Also as Hungarian is not widely spoken it might help to have more signs in English or staff who spoke it.

Hi, We have a group of 10 adults that would like to visit on Sunday in mid May.
The admission on the official web sites says the entrance fee is 1600 HUF per ticket, but I'm a bit confused, because it also says 1200 HUF for Adult group members?
So lets say if we wish to have a small group tour with an English speaking guide (10,000 HUF) how much is it total for our group of 10??
Written 11 April 2016
This is u r best answer
By the webpage of the Museum, if you require an English guide, you have to pay a 10.000.-HUF fee for guided tour if you are 7-15 persons ( less person is 8.000.-HUF, more is 15.000.-HUF), plus 1100.-HUF/adults or 400.- HUF/child fee.
