About
History of the Inner-City Parish Church Budapest The foundations of the church lie partly on the remains of a Roman building. A military fortification, Contra Aquincum, used to stand on what is now Március 15 Square with the commander’s room stretching beneath today’s church. Archaeological excavations between 2014 and 2016 revealed the remains of a stone building with many separate rooms and brick flooring, part of which could be heated. The fort commander’s room was actively used until the middle of the 4th century. The ditch in the centre of the room was part of the hypocaust. In the 11th and 12th centuries the stones of the Roman fort were reused to build a Romanesque church, whose original foundation walls are still visible today in the crypt. The church was then converted in the 12th century. A wall of the church erected at that time is preserved in the northern tower and is the largest extant Romanesque wall in Budapest.

- petergoode2Hendersonville, North Carolina516 contributionsA church full of history, beautiful exterior, specific unique interior featuresMy wife and I were completing our Viking Danube Eastern European cruise, and upon departing the ship, were taken on a bus tour of several highlights of Budapest. Evidently it is standard operating procedure for them to include a visit here. I fully endorse many of the prior reviews posted here. Specifically, the church provides for a nice exterior photo op, but otherwise, it is primarily noteworthy for its history...which is SO WELL described in a prior review, that it would be superfluous for me to repeat it. The interior of the facility is nowhere nearly as ornate as many Roman Catholic churches tend to be, but its painted ceiling is definitely unique, and they have done a nice job having scattered see-though glass floor panels allowing for visualization of prior church ruins. They have done the best they could vis a vis trying to restore the frescoes which were aggressively painted over during the mosque years. We did not realize there was an admission charge, evidently Viking deals with this directly with the church. Our guide admitted that since so many of had seen many religious facilities over our prior years of travel, not to mention this tour in specific, she asked us to NOT consider it an "ABC"...evidently a sarcastic reference to a cynical visitor who might classify this as "Another Beautiful Church". We are glad we visited.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 October 2023

- TravelingSoccerLoonSaint Paul, Minnesota5,970 contributionsPhotogenic Church with 1000 Years of HistoryPhotogenic church located on March 15 Square. Named Budapest Inner City Parish Church or officially The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The church has a 1000-year history plus it stands on ground that was once a Roman fortification. However, the church has been restored several times in different architectural styles. Originally Romanesque, Gothic aspects were added, and it was restored in a baroque style after a fire in the early 1700s. At one point it was even used as a mosque during the Ottoman rule.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 August 2024

In Budapest there are a lot of churches, however this is particularly interesting since it is erected on the spot where from the early 1000 there was church standing.
So it has seen history passing - being a catholic church most of the time but also serving as a mosque during the Ottoman occupation of Hungary.
In this church the patron saint of Budapest - St. Gellert (or Gerhard in german if you like) was buried in this church (if you go with a guide it will be very interesting to learn about this).
The architectural styles are mixed - since through the centuries it was refurbished and modified but you can recognize gothic and baroque styles for sure. So those of you who are into architecture will find it very interesting.
From the perspective of visiting when I've been there a big sign was up - open 0-24 however strangely it was closed ... hence the not perfect score on the review ... otherwise for sure its a piece of the history of Budapest that is worth visiting.

The Inner Parish Church is a baroque and gothic style church that can be visited on the Pest side of the Danube River, just a few minutes walk from the famous Vaci Utca street in the heart of the city centre.
This is a church with a longstanding history. A Roman style temple was originally here until it was decimated at the hands of the Tartars during the Mongol invasion.
In the 14th century, the original Inner Parish Church was built here. This gothic style church was seized during the Turkish occupation but eventually handed back over to the Roman Catholics, making this the only Christian Church on the Pest side of the river during that time. A fire in 1723 destroyed the original church, which was then rebuilt between 1725-1739 in baroque style popular during that time.
Subsequent centuries of restorations and rebuilding of much of the church after it was heavily damaged during WWII has resulted in the church presently having a mix of both baroque and earlier gothic features, which you can see today.
Inside the church, we liked the classic gothic vaulted ceiling. The vaults are coloured but in a minimalist manner compared to the likes of St. Matthias Church at Castle Hill. There is a nice pulpit and nice painted wood-panels found within the church. You can see everything quite comfortably in no more than 10-15 minutes. They do ask for a small donation (camera fee) if you intend to take pictures.
Outside the church, you can see a decorative baroque style entrance portal as well as an attractive church facade, which was a fresh coat of paint in 2010-2011. The church sits on the March 15 Square which is a fair place to stop and rest your feet. Unfortunately, it is also almost directly adjacent to the Elisabeth Bridge constructed here in the 1960s.
Overall, we found this to be a good church visit if you intend to be in the area and enjoy seeing historic churches. If short on time, we'd recommend saving your time for nearby St. Stephen's Basilica and St. Matthias Church found at Castle Hill on the other side of the river, which are better churches to see. However, if you have time on your hands, this is a decent church to visit.

It is hard to miss this church as it is so close to many other attractions downtown. The restoration work has now finished and though not the most impressive church in Budapest the reason it is worth visiting to to see the different periods of history that have left their mark. As with many other places either read the information provided by the main entrance or read up on the church before hand. As you walk through the church note the baroque and neo-classical side altars, Once in the gothic sancutary try to glimpse the revealed and restored medieval frescoes and the Islamic mihrab, from the time the church was a mosque under the Ottoman Turks. Sit a bit in the pews and imagine as the church grew and changed throughout the centuries. You can also see a relic, an arm bone I believe, of St. Gerard, in a glass case in the new, rather odd chunky altar. For those interested in Mass, there is a beautiful Traditional Latin Mass at noon on Sundays. Sadly modern times have defaced the church with two flatscreen tvs being stuck into it, one in the lovely carved wooden pulpit, the pastor must be crazy. All in all worth a 20 minute visit.

While this church is easy on the eye when it comes to its exterior, its interior is not particularly interesting, nor justifies the entrance price.

Throughout its history, its purpose, under the guidence of the Fraciscan Order, foundered by St Francis of Assisi, this holy place of praise and worship, has endured numerous "trials and tribulations" It stands still in the 21st century, bringing to its community and the wider world that visit this beautiful and historic City of Budapest, and Country of Hungary, in its message to those that enter its doors, the true meaning of peace, tranquility, hope and love.In the word Catholic, we acknowledge within its meaning "all embracing" which is a world for which I pray, and trust others who visit this holy place, join me in just not the historical significence of this place, its message, but feel embraced moved and enriched, motivated to-wards making continuous in our daily lives acts of deeds that make our world universal and all embracing.

The renovation of this church and the adjacent area finally got ready in 2016. The result is excellent. The Romanesque church with the eastern section in Gothic style dedicated to Mary again serves the Roman Catholic community of Budapest. Special attention has been given to make ancient foundations visible in the nearby park.
Particularly beautiful I found the colorful arches near the main altar. The niches with side-altars are perhaps less successful additions.

Now the undercroft has finished being refitted the church is accessible which it hadn't been for while. It has some interesting Roman ruins - the underfloor ducts for the Fort HQ of Contra-Aquincum dating to 350 AD. The undercroft also contains some Baroque figurines of the Apostles and a reliquary containing a relic from the true cross given by one of the popes. At ground floor level there are various monuments and statuary. There is also a lovely painted iconostasis. It was converted into mosque when the Turks ruled Budapest and the mihrab is still there. Lizst conducted orchestras here for several years. The staff are very helpful

The church building is sited on roman ruins, around 200 ad, so check out the ruins in the crypt.
There are also frescos dated to the 14th century and at one time it was a Turkish mosque.
Not enough history? Franz Liszt played here for 7 years.
A wonderful quiet place of solitude.

We really liked that church as it looked totally different then the other churches and buildings in the area. The colors are very vibrant and reminded me a little bit of the south of France churches. Very beautiful and unique architectural design!
