The area
Address
Neighbourhood: District I / Buda
The historical center to a city with a multifarious and intricate past, Buda has some of the most outstanding buildings in Europe and an enviable natural landscape with stunning views onto the Danube. Centered around the Royal Palace, it provides a glimpse into the golden years of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the lives led by the aristocracy at the time. Matthias Church, beside the palace, hosted many events attended by the royal family and was the chosen place for the coronation of Franz Josef, one of the Hungarian Habsburg kings. Having admired the palace and the church, a visit to Buda will be unforgettable by the stunning and memorable panorama over Pest offered by the seven towered Fishermen’s Bastion.

Some stones and this anonymous tower remain of the ancient Church. To climb to the top about 200 narrow steps. At the top there is a beautiful view. Not suitable for the elderly, heart patients and panzoi. Cost about 5 euros.

Originally built in the 13th century in gothic style - it stood in this place for several hundred years. It has been expended and modified , with baroque elements . It was an impressive building -as it can be seen from the size of the bell tower that is still standing today.
During WWII it has been severely damaged by bombs - still even that the roof collapsed here and there the external walls still stood.
The end came in 1950 - when initially renovations started, but shortly after the decision was taken to demolish the church and only the tower remained - today is know mainly and Buda Tower.
Apposite of the tower there is a restored arched window - gothic style with beautiful stone decorations - and it is impressive in size - although it is a good chance than the original actual building window was bigger.
Now, what can also be seen inside the ruin perimeter and it can be interesting is the bronze cast of the coronation mantle of the Hungarian kings.
Also you can climb the stares of the tower - it is free of charge for those who have a Budapest card - however mind the opening hours of the tower - for us it wasn't interesting this time to climb (a little shy of 200 steps to the top).
When you are in the area , and if you are interested by history , for it can be a very good experience. Visiting the ruins is free of charge.

The remains of the church are to be seen with the remaining Buda Tower now accessible via a spiral staircase. Small charge, but amazing views.

Lovely exterior remnants of the church, and very interesting history explained in English placards inside. Incredible view from the top.

Interestingly, there are hardly any ruins to be seen on the castle hill - apart from the remains of an old church. Therefore, it is very striking and worth seeing. The display boards with information were very well done.

There are actually only a few remains of the church, but the tower has remained miraculously intact from the various sieges and bombings. You can climb to the top and enjoy a decent panorama overlooking the parliament and the Danube.
