Walking down from Saint Mattias Church towards the National Archives Building and our bus stop back to Pest we discovered the oldest Lutheran church of Buda. It was originally built in 1846, in Dísz Square, but had to be relocate when the Ministry of Defense took over the area. The new church, school and a pastor's house was built on the corner of Viennese Gate Square in 1895. Unfortunately, during siege of Budapest in 1945 the church, school and a pastor's house were severely damaged by the bombardment and only the outer walls escaped destruction., With the coming of Communism error the school could no longer be rebuilt, and the church lost all its original splendor. But after several renovations and transformations it has taken on some of its former Neoclassical glory. In 2008 the paved area in front of the church were renovated along with double loft entrance the tall slim square tower that points gracefully to the Heavens above. As it was not Sunday we could not go inside the church and check out the new altar. At times during the summer they have Organ recitals here. Check what’s on in Budapest. TIP: From here you can catch the public bus back to Elizabeth square

The oldest Lutheran church of Budapest was built in 1808 in line with Protestant Puritanism. The cleancut neo-classicist design placed the cross not onto a spire but on a tympanum resting on four Doric columns. The only striking ornament of the interior is its marble altar and altarpiece above it, a paraphrase on Raffaello’s ‘Transfiguratio’. The church together with a nearby nursery, secondary school and library is known as the Lutheran island of Budapest.
