- Danks KnowsShoalhaven, Australia2,261 contributionsStunning CastlePredjama Castle is a castle in Slovenia. It is near the small village of Predjama. Built in 1274 at the mouth of cave, it was extended over the next three hundred years to what is there today. The cave system the castle is built into has an entry/exit above and below the castle. The castle is visually stunning and viewing it is certainly a WOW moment - the history and displays I’m the castle are excellent and it is well worth the visit. It costs 12 Euros to enter the castle.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 12 October 2023
- Ljubica BLondon, United Kingdom7,751 contributionsBeautiful views from the castleThis is just an amazing castle …. A dream place full of adventures and surprises in side … bring comfortable shoes and with some grip this place is natural wet … there is not lifts…. The castle is full of hidden corners that takes you to a nice natural cave. You need a car or a tourist bus to reach this place . You must pay for parking per hour. The castle is in the world Guiness records of the largest castle built on a cave. They have audio Guia in many languages. People were polite and nice.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 24 October 2023
- ifigeneiaAthens, Greece93 contributionsHolidays in SloveniaOne of the most beautiful castles.i have visited. Really worth visiting it. Impressive, in an amazing area . We had tickets also for the cave, so we had a small discount. I didn't like that you paid both parkings (for the cave and then for the castle) and you didn't have choice to park somewhere else. Also the tickets were expensive. Despite of these , I believe that it worths.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 November 2023
- WanderingOttersonsDenver, Colorado1,476 contributionsCompletely unique and coolHome many times are you going to see a castle built into a cave/hillside? Not only are the cave walls part of the walls of some of the rooms, but they also designed it and built channels to funnel the water inside the cave to collection points for usage. It's just so cool. The ingenuity of the place is fascinating well beyond the visual of it. Which is also cool. The museum inside is interesting as you follow the numbers through. Definitely get the audio guide here as you would miss so much otherwise. It can get pretty tight inside at times as this was not designed for large amounts of people at once and there are many areas that can be a little tricky to get around. Like the very uneven and tall steps cut out of rock that can be wet and slippery from water in the cave as they steeply wind up to a small lookout that dozens of people are trying to traverse at once. The best views are from outside, looking at the castle but you need to go in to experience this.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 December 2023
- Katie SmithBaumholder, Germany78 contributionsOne of our favorite castles in Europe so farThis is one of our favorite castles in Europe so far. We visited as a family of 5 with kids aged between 11-18. Our ticket was part of a combo ticket with the Postojna Cave. We spent €186 for entry to both and for an English audio guide at the cave. When you get to Predjama, you park in a paid lot and walk up a steep but short path to the castle. There are bathrooms and snack options leading to the castle. Once at the entry, there is a QR code to download the app which has the audio tour. There were about 27 listening stops in the tour. We LOVED the tour. It was so interesting and it was easy to imagine what it may have been like to live there. There were a lot of stairs in the tour so beware and take your ibuprofen in advance if your knees aren’t agreeable. We spent about an hour exploring. Make sure to make a wish and ring the bell!Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 March 2024
- iidaliinas19 contributionsCool castle, possibly the most interesting we've visited. Perfect timing with no crowds.Audio guide was filled with interesting facts and stories, but not too long for a child (8) to listen and pay attention. The castle is just so stunning it's easily worth the trouble of getting there! Also, we had some nice home food with a good price in a restaurant in front of the castle. Would definitely recommend!Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 April 2024
- gregsf11San Francisco, California844 contributionsGood rainy day activityAlong with the nearby caves, we thought this would be a good rainy day alternative. Going inside is quite worthwhile, actually, no matter what a certain expert on Europe may claim. Is it the best castle in the world? No. But going inside gives you an appreciation of how it's built into the cave. The architectural features make it unique.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 May 2024
- Suzie GCape Town, South Africa204 contributionsInteresting and educationalI am more inclined to visit nature than churches, castles, etc. With that said, this castle was one of the highlights of our trip and I am so happy we went inside. The audioguide shares interesting stories and facts about the castle, we really listened to every single one. It is fun to walk the whole castle. I would definitely recommend visiting.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 May 2024
- Fiona GFloreat, Australia132 contributionsVery well set out and great audio guideWe weren’t sure what to expect with this visit to a UNESCO listed cave castle but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. An audio guide was included with our admission ticket and there were clear numbers for each room so you got the information for the correct area. To further enhance this, the descriptions, whilst thorough, were short so you weren’t standing around waiting for it to finish before moving on. The way they set it out meant you almost went in a circle rather than continually doubling back. Some of the stairs were steep so it is not recommended for people with mobility issues.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 1 June 2024
- r.parker99103 contributionsUnusual and interesting castle well worth a detour.A small, but well presented attraction well worth the detour to see. Well interpreted and discreet staff will help and assist with any questions etc. Great photo opportunities. If you are pressed for time do this instead of the Postojna Cave nearby its far better experience.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 June 2024

We purchased the combined ticket ($83 for 2 adults) and took the 10 AM Postojna Cave tour before visiting this castle. After paying an attendant 5 Euro for parking, we used the clean restrooms, then followed temporary signs along the back lawn to the entrance; the normal road was under repair. We were provided an audio guide and followed the wall numbers for specific information on each of the rooms encountered. This is a realistic structure remaining in its original 15th C form, somewhat cold and forbidding and totally built for defensive purposes where the owners could even retreat to an outfitted cave.
This was a very worthwhile combined tour.

A castle is build into a cave so his arhitecture is stunning. With the help of audio guide you get much better insight of how life was in the castle at that time. You can also drink a beer or have a nice lounch with the view on the castle. If you make arrangements with the tour guides in advance, you can also see the cave and meet the mysterious creatures living there :)

This castle was very unique. The location was within the cave on the high cliff. There were many rooms inside and we used the audio guide to get information about the whole part of the castle. There were many stairs inside the castle. Please use comfort shoes or sandals.

We made the drive here from Bled and man o man it is truly amazing!!!! Such a beautiful castle constructed using the natural walls of the cave, it makes me wonder if we’ve advanced our building techniques that much... simply stunning!
I’m happy to say, after seeing it on tv and in movies it still managed to live up to the hype.
There’s plenty of free parking, and entry is about €15 each. Well worth it in my book! The free audio guides give you ample information about the rooms and their uses as well as the history of the castle. Take an afternoon and see one of Slovenia’s greatest attractions!

Our methodology for visiting the castle was somewhat different than most.
Our guidebook had suggested the stunning location of the castle was the main attraction, so we were interested in finding a hiking route that might lead to it. We found such a route, the Dragon’s Path circular trail on the Visit-Postojna website tourist website.
The 7.2 km loop trail starts along a rural road just outside the small village Smihel pod Nanosom and ends at the same point, at a monument that tells the local legend of a Dragon and the local lad who slew the dragon. A short walk through the village leads to a community water tap, and into the woods for a pleasant forest walk. It took us maybe a hour to get to to to the castle, and the way that the castle just seemed to appear out of nowhere on the trail gave us a sense of what it might have been like to happen upon the seemingly impenetrable forest on foot 500 years ago. Very cool.
A few places to stop for refreshment at the castle was a welcome sight.
We could of course visited the interior of the castle, but as a stand alone attraction ( not done in conjunction with the Postojna Cave tour) the 15 Euro cost seemed a bit steep.
Our only issue was the lack of signage for the trail; there really isn’t any. A map from the website is helpful, and allowed us to reach the castle no problem; we just followed a sign with a picture of a bike and the number 3. On the return journey, we continued to follow the same signs, which was a mistake; it took us onto some local roads walking through the countryside, and we later learned was not the intended route. Pretty views, but it lengthened our return journey by 2km, an extra hour of time. No big deal, we enjoyed the walk anyway, but some better signage would be most welcome.

Iconic rock castle, the largest rock castle in the world, is also in the Guinness Book of Records! Castle is 10 km from Postojna Cave and I recommend to buy combo ticket with all park attractions, you will have it cheaper. And you just must visit also Postojna Caves and for the best experience I recommend to stay in Hotel Jama just at the caves.

Incredible castle built within the rock of the mountain ! i have never seen anything like it ! Crazy atmosphere and great stories. Good audioguide around the castle. On the négative side : an outrageous 18,50€ per person to visit the place !!!! And another 10€ for 2 hours of parking ! We did not visit the caves ( it’s usually a combined ticked) due to lack of time. It’s a true rip off, being European, that kind of price is very rare, and uncalled for. Especially while we know for a fact that the same castle ( as reviewed on trip advisor) rises their price 2€ / year.

It has been more than seventy years since J.R.R Tolkien published his first book “The Fellowship of the Ring” and fascinated to millions of readers from then on with his Middle Earth. However, it seems to be that we can find some magic places of Tolkien’s world in real life. I am referring to the Predjama Castle in Slovenia, the Helm’s Deep of The Middle Earth made reality.
Predjama Castle is a renaissance castle built within a cave mouth in south-central Slovenia, in the village of Predjama. When I visited this place some years ago in my end-of-year trip, I was quite sceptic about Slovenia due to the lack of awareness of this country in Spain. Nevertheless, I was absolutely wrong. Not only did I love this marvellous and wonderful place, but we discovered and enjoyed its gastronomy or traditions among many other aspects.
Consequently, from my point of view this is an ideal destiny, which, if I were you, I would take seriously into consideration. Finally, if you decide to come, I have some tips for you. First of all, I suggest coming in summer because this is a fresh place a bit cold, more appropriate for summer season. Moreover, you’d better always take a light jacket with you, though the day is hot in the morning, the weather can change here quicky.
To sum up, visiting this castle was an enjoyable experience for me and I am sure that I would be for you as well, I hope this post help you.

We visited the Predjama castle in combination with the Postojna Cave and would definitely recommend getting the combo tickets which are especially for young people or students a great deal. We would actually suggest going to Predjama first and then visiting the caves as the caves are less crowded in the afternoon and the busses back to the central point are getting rare in the late afternoon. It was a magical experience and you get a free audio guide with your entrance ticket. The castle is stunning and the way the history has been made accessed is great. As the steps in the castle are ofen steep or even dangerous i wouldn’t suggest going with kids that are too young. Otherwise, great experience and lovely scenery.

Predjama Castle seems to be much larger in the photos I saw online before visiting. However, it's location is still impressive. It is much less crowded than the nearby Postojna Caves, and the visit was more enjoyable. There was a short audio guide to follow around the castle, but most did not have any special exhibits. For me, the most impressive part of my visit was the part of the castle that is actually built inside the cave. I would recommend spending about an hour there.

Hello, I am into collecting pressed pennies (smashed pennies, elongated coins/pennies), which are when you enter 1 euro and 5 cents, and the machine puts a new imprint on the 5 cents and it’s a really good souvenir, and I saw that the castle has a pressed pennie machine. Can somebody please tell me if this is true?

Buonasera, volevo capire se fosse possibile raggiungere il castello partendo dalle Grotte con auto propria.
Perché sul sito parla solo di navette e taxi.

It depends on how interesting you find it. You get an audioguide which takes about 1 hour if you walk and listen to all of it. You can of course spend as much time as you like there, but I would say about 1 hour.

On 14th November we are driving from Rovinj to our hotel in Ljubjana . We are planning on visiting Skocjan Caves at 10am then heading to the Castle and possibly the Caves in afternoon before heading into the city. Is this plan possible ? Should I pick one of the caves or just do both of these two as they are on same general site. Thanks

Grazie
