Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Well worth a visit. It is deceptively large on 3 floors and has a variety of interesting often visual exhibitions. A little way out in places, but that's only to be expected from a contemporary art museum. We particularly the exhibition on the Slovenian punk movement, whose music was surprisingly good!

The museum is not very big and accordingly the price pretty reasonable. Could be a bit more interesting if it had less pictures and more actual installations maybe.. Nevertheless, I discovered some exhibits I very much enjoyed and the museum building is well organised. I'm glad I visited MSUM.
Also might be helpful: the current exhibition "Neither Human nor Animal" includes some videos of which content (animal slaughter..) the visitors should be informed, because it could be disturbing to some.

I was there with my little sister, who really isn't into art and I felt quite sorry for bringing her there. We only visited the temporary exhibition since we weren't interested in the "communist art section" and I didn't really like what I saw except for one artist's work. This is the first time I go out of a modern art museum so unsatisfied of what I saw.
I felt quite oppressed with the staff looking constantly at us in every room (we were alone in this part of the museum). This is something I am more used to see in big museums such as the louvre or the British museum of art, where I don't even see them with all the people surrounding me but in a such small museum with little visitors it felt strange.
I don't say it is a bad place to visit since temporary exhibitions change all the time and the staff was very friendly when addressed but the current exhibition (june 2016) isn't really worth visiting.

Trust me when I say I usually get tired of modern art quickly; especially when they get in that mood of “if you don’t understand its complexity, then art is not your thing”, but here everything makes sense and the exhibitions actually make you feel something. This is GOOD modern art, that has a meaning and something to say.
It also has important topics: war, rape, disability, stereotypes, etc., it is protesting about something all the time, I love that.
It’s important to mention that the building it beautiful, the staff is kind and the exhibitions have the perfect size (not too big, not too small).
I recommend it.

Very nice museum with lots of beautiful pictures. It might not have english under every picture, but they are totally worth looking at, if you love art. Very polite staff. With your ticket from here, you can get 50% off the ticket at their other musem, from what they told me.

I doubt in visiting this place due to some negative critics on TripAdvisor. They probed wrong. It is a great small museum. Of course it is contemporary art, so it is not all easyness.
The exhibit about postwar Slovenia public art and its political and social situation was eye opening. And invited to a profund reflection on the aesthetic and symbolic role of monuments. Many of them have been destroyed or ignored in post-soviet Slovenia.
Other exhibits were more conceptual, but all interesting.
I strongly recomend its visit.

I left this museum feeling depressed fron the exhibits and upset with myself dragging my husband through here. I go to art museums in every city that I visit and have never before been to one where I didn't find at least one inspiring thing. The graffiti outside is better (and free!)

Been to several European museums of modern art, alone and with family. Normally each of us found few interesting pieces of work, which kids sometimes still remember and discuss.
Not the case in MSUM: we left after 30 minutes, because 80% of installations is praise to former Yugoslavian (communists) regime - so pathetic.
Overall a very boring experience, and NOT recommended!
Finally, the guarantee that I was there for the first and the last time in my life, was a red sticker on the wall of neighboring building at Metelkova "city": Immigrants welcome, tourists f..k off !
So much of European mentality, culture and values in Slovenia.
ps. as other reviewers pointed out, every our step was closely guarded by staff present in each room - how relaxing ... :-(

Not a very thought provoking museum, at the time of my vist I was not impressed by the installations, one or two were good. It would be better with a bigger variety of Art works. Also felt uncomfortable by the people who sit and look after each level, who follow you around as you look at the art. I would give it a miss if asked. The modern art museum is much better.

Having visited over 50 museums from all over Europe I've never experience anything close to this pathetic. It was impossible to focus on the art as the entire time I was there I was stalked by 2 members of staff. Essentially I was paying 5 euros to be treated as a criminal/petulant untrustworthy child. At some point I thought it was a piece of art being played upon me, yet asking both the stalkers and the front desk both were convinced this is normal behavior.
As for the art, though there were three interesting pieces within the museum, I'd already seen two of them in Warsaw modern art museum 5 years ago and a temporary exhibition in Amsterdam 3 years ago. There are many other museums in Ljubljana that you can to visit that are bigger, cheaper, better organised and have more original work. Avoid.
