- Danks KnowsShoalhaven, Australia2,261 contributionsCompact tourist locationLjubljana old town, like most old towns is the tourist hot spot. You will find the usual; town squares, river, churches, bridges, town halls, boat trips, markets, restaurants, cafes and bars. Ljubljana old town is compact and relatively small but it has everything you need. You can see everything within a day and it is all easy flat walking. It is picturesque and when I was there not too crowded. There are also markets most days. A great tourist location.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 12 October 2023
- WanderingOttersonsDenver, Colorado1,476 contributionsSmall but fantastic old townWe’ve been to lots of old town areas across Europe. This one is decidedly smaller than most others as it is a smaller city. It does, however, not lack in charm and a great vibe. We found ourselves coming here several times just to hang out and chill. There is a very relaxed atmosphere in town, even with the tourists. As Slovenia is not a huge tourist area (hopefully that will stay the same at least a little?), there is unlike so many old towns, a great blend of local and tourist. Sure, you have your shops to cater to the foreigners, but you also have local businesses and people just doing their daily lives. There are tons of food and drink options along both banks of the river cutting through the town. You have the castle on the hill, towering over the town as well and also the dragons everywhere to be seen.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2023
- Bonnie S7 contributionsWould love to go again.Very walkable town with cafes everywhere. Nice riverfront. We stayed near the Dragon bridge. Many restaurants of all price levels. They were roasting Chestnuts which I haven’t seen since I was a child. We had great weather too. They were having a wine tasting festival in the Castle. We extended our stay an extra day to take it all in. Took the FlixBus to Croatia. The combo train/ bus depot could use some work.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 October 2023
- CDocking53 contributionsgreat for a sl different city breakA lovely city with a big cafe society and car free old town. Lots of students and very vibrant with some nice little shops - obviously a lot selling souvenirs but generally of a decent standard. Great wines and a few places with more authentic dishes. Probably a weekend is enough to explore it as not huge but perfect city break being just 2 hours from Gatwick. Really friendly people on the whole.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 November 2023
- Tommy599Two Rivers, Wisconsin863 contributionsIntrestresting old townBecause much of the city was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1895, Ljubljana (Slovenia's current capital) has a unique architectural style that has integrated surviving historic structures with more modern designs. The work of Joze Plecnik, a 20th-century architect and Ljubljana native, is everywhere and incorporates Roman, medieval, Baroque, and Habsburg elements. City population = 100,000. Very interesting arrangement with this city, with the old section being closed off to all motorized traffic between 10 AM and 10 PM (they have automatic road barriers that go up from ground level), so the streets are open only to presidents and bicycles. We were informed: Most of the buildings survived the earthquake (several years back) and all is now called “the historic part of town (Old Ljubljana)”. There is a very nice river that runs through the town, one interesting spot is where there are three stone bridges at one single location spanning the river. We stopped at a Potica bakery and had a nice tasting of the Slovenian traditional nut breadVisited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 November 2023
- Lynn St2 contributionsStrolling along the riverOld town was light up with trees, Christmas theme decorations and wonderful wooden shops. We went to a different restaurant everyday for our week stay. Every restaurant we chose we enjoyed. We never had a bad meal. Coming from California wine country, we can be a bit snobbish about wine, but again we never had a wine that was not deliciousVisited December 2023Written 8 December 2023
- stephens473Nottingham, United Kingdom443 contributionsFabulous place to explore. What a fabulous place , so much to see and do. The highlights for us were The Dragon Bridge, Three Bridges , Plecnik House, Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, Preseren Square and so many more. We strolled through the shops and cafes on both sides of the river and spent 2 full days out of our 7 exploring the Old Town. Definitely one of the best places we have visited in a long time. Everywhere is easy to get to by foot , all on the flat but Taxis are ridiculously cheap. Everyone we met was so friendly and spoke perfect English , well worth a return visit at some point. Put it on your bucket list.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 11 February 2024
- C_and_H_11Dublin, Ireland783 contributionsWould Definitely Return! The fully pedestrianised centre of this beautiful capital city was a really wonderful surprise. With the absence of traffic it was really pleasant to walk along the river & through the many streets with beautiful buildings in all directions. There was a wonderful atmosphere & it was very quiet & peaceful as there was no noise as in other cities. Great coffee shops, restaurants, food & craft stalls & very friendly people. We were just there for a day while touring through Slovenia but would definitely return in the future for a longer visit & highly recommend taking a trip to Ljubljana.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 March 2024

We were here for only an afternoon & evening & wished we could have stayed much longer. This city is beautiful, with a great family-friendly vibe, affordable prices, amazing restaurants & bars, the river with boats & great shopping. The people were all very friendly & its easy to get around with only English. We were shocked to see that even on December 30th, they seemed to be celebrating like Christmas was the next day. Christmas stalls were open & there was great food, hot chocolate & glow wine everywhere. The lights, trees & decorations were nice, & it felt the most Christmassy of any place we visited on our trip to 7 countries. We'll definitely return here again in the future & stay longer. Can't say enough good things about this city & would say it is a "must see" in Europe.

We visited several towns and cities during our vacation in Europe, but this is the one place I most want to return to. We barely had more than a day there, and it definitely wasn't enough. Though there were certainly a lot of people walking about the city, it didn't feel crowded. It felt safe, clean and very pleasant. There are so many beautiful cafes to sit outside and enjoy a meal or a drink. The market was small at the end of the day, as people were starting to pack up, but it was absolutely still worth shopping. It is a wonderful, historic city, but with all the modern amenities you might want.

Ljubljana old downtown is a must when you plan your trip of the balkans. The castle is OK but you have to go up there see the view of the Alps at distance, breathtaking. I had the best time at the wine shop, they served us a wonderful local wine, really good, with pumpkin orange marmalade and a fresh cut of jamón serrano - AMAZING. If you can, walk down to the main square area. It’s fun.
The main square then starts with a farmers market, the cathedral and the stroll along the river.
As you cross the dragon bridge, look for the small souvenir stores to the right, one of them carries many local artists stuff including t-shirts with unique dragon designs, earrings, pottery, hand painted stones and many other things.
Then walking along the river you will see many charming gorgeous spots to photograph. Including the view of the castle from below. I loved the jewelry and shoe stores! Kid friendly, fun especially with the dragons. Many eatery/bar/cafe options. Not super wheelchair friendly.

We have visited Ljubljana twice now, and I think it is my favourite European city! It has some beautiful architecture, and the walks along the river with lovely buildings and restaurants both sides make it very special. It is quite a compact city to walk around, with plenty of nice restaurants and bars all around. The castle is up on the hill and can be seen from everywhere. Tivoli Park is a huge area of park and woodland, popular with local hikers, and is a lovely place for a nice long walk. The bus and train stations are a short walk away, so it is easy to get from here to other places such as Lake Bled.

Doing a tour either by bike or walking would be recommended but just wander around and look. So beautiful. Also suggest visit during the day and then in the evening as when the sun goes down some of the buildings look so much more stunning

The area quite big and spent hours to go around. This is a pedestrian area. We could see the old building with Slovenian style, take a boat on Ljubljana River, relax and dine in cafes or restaurant, shopping at some shops and even only sitting and watching people walking around. Ljubljana Castle also located in this area. This place was really show the Ljubljana people's lifestyle.

Very beautiful historic center and UNESCO heritage. You can easily tour it in half a day but I recommend staying longer because the center is truly full of life and allows you to really enjoy the city. Take your time for a snack, a beer or an aperitif in the many places along the river at absolutely reasonable prices and don't just stop along the river because the streets and squares around are really very beautiful

One of the most mesmerizing capital cities in the world. Infact, Slovenia is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe, untouched and unexplored. I couldn't get enough of clicking at the same points again and again. The amazing cafes and restaurants next to the river. The beautifully decorated shops. The castle view from the centre. Colorful buildings. And most importantly, it is not crowded like most of the well known European capitals where you can't even breathe properly, forget a nice picture, no matter how beautiful the European capitals are.

We spent three days in Ljubljana in order to visit the sourrounding region. The small town has been a susprise with the old city centre which is very well maintanied. nowadays the streets along the river are totally polulated by numerous restaurants and pubs, which provides an image of a really dynamic, alive and young city. the view of the rock with on top the ancient fort is impressive, mosto of all from the three bridges. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the opan air market on saturday morning, and to have lunch in one of the bistro restaurants next to it (under the colonnade parallel to the river. It's a lovely city for a short break, really close to other attractions.

Buona visita!

Salve a tutti.
Buon viaggio

Looking for a good hotel in or very near to old town. Planning a snowywinter visit.

We stayed at the Grand hotel Union, very good hotel. Has a small pool, aswell.
Ljubljana is small, so this is five minutes walk to old town, but at a quiet street.
Have a lovely stay!

We were there in September. The only Christmas markets we have experienced has been in Budapest. I agree with other travelers......just wear good walking shoes and allow plenty of time to enjoy the Old Town section.

if we stay in an air b&b in the old town area at the end of June, will we find any parking nearby?
Written 2 May 2019
We found some parking places about 500m away from the center where we could park for free. But it was week-end.
Written 31 October 2019
would you recommend staying in a hotel in the old town?
Written 10 March 2019
Depends on when and how you are travelling. High season parking could be expensive and problematic in the old town if not available at the hotel. I stayed in an apartment 15 minutes walk from the centre which was perfect for my needs. But if you prefer hotel accommodation then I see no reason why not to choose one in the old town. If close to the river the cafes and bars could be noisy late into the night in high season. Hope this helps.

Oi Bel,
