A blend of unattractive buildings
Jun. 2019 • Couples
The square houses the main parliament building on one side and on the other, one of the first office towers built in the country. Some sculptors in socialist realist style cap off what is a quite unattractive part of the city.

Visit Mandatory
Dec. 2018 • Friends
Ok it's a square but it's so diferent from other Ljubljana attractions that a visit is mandatory. So huge, so great and so big that we feel that's another city.

Not pretty
Sep. 2018 • Couples
Large but rather plain-looking square, too comunist-looking. Scattered statues are really nothing much to see.

Blend of Pyongyang and Gruto Parkas
Aug. 2017 • Solo
It's hard to believe that this ugly and unpleasant square is located just a few meters from the much more beautiful Congress Square and old town. It's even harder to believe that it used to be a lovely garden all until 1960s when the "wise" local government concluded that Ljubljana might have urgently needed yet another North Korean style concrete square. Except during very rare events or protests you might notice that nobody hangs around this uninspiring place and that everyone seems to pass it as quickly as possible.

The eastern and northern sides of the square are dominated by the Maximarket department store and the national parliament, respectively, both in a typical socialist style.

The southern edge of the square is dominated by two buildings. The lower one is HQ of the infamous NLB bank, among locals also nicknamed as the "laundry machine" and "famous" for many corruption scandals where billions of € have disappeared.

There are two communist era monuments at the western edge. The larger one is dedicated to the communist revolution (among the bloodiest ones in Eastern Europe!) and the other one to Edvard Kardelj, the main ideologist of Yugoslav communism, massive killings and "self management" socialism that had devastated the country's economy.

There is an expensive parking garage under the square, accessible from the Šubičeva street. If you'd really like to park here, you are warmly recommended to try a cheaper one under the nearby Congress Square first.

Too communist-style
Jun. 2017 • Couples
Given the history of Slovenia as a part of communist state it's not strange to see communist symbols, but those found on this square are not at least pretty like some else are.
The biggest drawback is a huge gap in architecture between this square and almost everything else in Ljubljana.

Square is not parking place any more
Jan. 2017 • Friends
Place is a paved area between parliament, fine shopping mall, biggest bank, congress and cultural center and another huge building. It is not communist architecture – too small, no classicism, no realistic sculptures around. On small figurative monument and some abstract sculptures are far away from pathetic socialist buildings and sculptures. People visit mainly the shopping mall (Maximarket) or the bank (Ljubljanska banka), some go to the concerts or to the exhibitions in Cankarjev dom. You can walk over the square in five minutes; you need ten more to see the sculptures and an hour or so to visit all the shops. You can find all, from fine chocolates, clothes to rare old books. Parking is under the main ground.

Soviet style square
Nov. 2016 • Solo
One can imagine mass rallies taking place here during the communist era. It's a large square, nothing too much to see in itself, but for the history of the place it's still worth a visit. A few communist style monuments to admire.
