Description:

National Museum of Slovenia is the oldest and the largest museum...

National Museum of Slovenia is the oldest and the largest museum institution in Slovenia. It was founded in 1821. The museum palace in the very centre of Ljubljana was built in 1888 and was the first building in Slovenia, assigned exclusively to culture. The permanent archaeological exhibition reveals the unique past of Slovenia. Among other great exhibits you can see the earliest musical instrument in the world, the 60,000-year-old Neanderthal flute as well as the situla from Vače.

The museum is nice, especially for young children, but if you've been to such museums in cities like London or New York, there is no comparison.

Firstly, the museum has two parts: historical and natural history. Both are done with love, care, are very easy to follow and provide quick overview of the Slovenia's history (though there will be some repetition if you visit the castle before the museum). Secondly, at the time of our visit there was a fantastic exhibition about freemasonry!

Check all the Slovene treasures in National museum: artefacts from prehistoric period (Neanderthal flute, Halsstat bucket ...) or all kinds of remainings from Roman empire or even Egipt mumie and off course much more.

National museum of Ljubljana is situated in city center near Tivoli park. Inside are many of interesting exponents, but for sure is the most breathtaking one, the Egyptian mummy from the 5th or 6th century BC

I visited just the main building near the Parliament. They can get five stars for archeology and really interesting old whistle, Vaška situla and Roman antique. Less interesting is presentation of newer history. Second museum in the same building, Prirodoslovni muzej, has also some fine presentations. Entrance fee is not high and museum has fewer visitors than expected.

This is a truly excellent museum with both historical and archaeological parts. The bronze Roman statue is magnificent and one of the few surviving. The skeleton of the woolly mammoth is also impressive.

I thought the museum was absolutely first class. There were odds and ends of Roman, Greek, Egyptian etc.stuff, but if you want those you go to the original site; so I didn't even bother to look. On the history of the area and the Slovene people it was excellent and mostly explained in English as well as Slovenian. That was... More
