- Pat Stokes.20 contributionsThe Lipizzaner Stud Farm at Lipica. We travelled with Riviera to Lipica Stud Farm. We had a brilliant guide who worked there, and he showed us around two stables and gave us the most wonderful information about the famous Lipizzan horses. We could have listened to him for hours, and then we were treated to a performance by the gorgeous horses who are in training. It was a 5 star performance and a dream come true for myself. Thank you everyone.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 16 October 2023
- pamfromcamCamarillo, California23 contributionsEnjoyable day among the Lipizzaner horses.Wonderful day at the farm. Seeing the beautiful horses in the fields was awe inspiring. We enjoyed watching the training session also and learning more about the horses and how they were saved during WWII. We also watched a dressage session which was impressive. Much more interesting if you have read the book The Perfect Horse first.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 30 June 2024
- JimRiestererEdina, Minnesota5,993 contributionsAmazing whir horses-where it all beganWe had a wonderful day at this large, historic place dating from 1580. In fact they were hosting a celebration of their 444th anniversary on 15 Sep 2024 a few days after our visit. We arrived in about an hour driving from Portoroz and got there in time to take the noon tour in English. Our guide took our group of around 20 around the property, into historic stables explaining all the history behind these amazing animals. Afterwards we had a nice lunch in the hotel before heading back inside the arena for the 3 PM show. (Be sure to check the schedule-only offered a few times a week-we saw it on Friday). While you can’t take any photos or video it was amazing watching the 45-minute show set to classical music. Cost for entrance plus show was 25€ pp plus 3€ for parking which you can pay at the main ticket booth (bring your license plate info) instead of the dumb machines by the parking. You can spend as much time as you like wandering around. There’s a small museum and even a church (former bishopric). Highly recommendedVisited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 September 2024

Lipica is worth visiting, horses seems nice and well cared for. The museum is slso great. The guided tours are informative and worth 45 min of time. Otherwise staff seems unsatisfied and they talk bad things over eachother infront of visitors. The food offer is poor: a fast food tent with only two workers. The coock touches fresh meat and then the vegies for salad without washing hands! At the other side there is an overpriced restaurant with unfriendly staff and old desserts.

The stars of the show are of course the horses so gentle and kind. We paid for a general tour which included a guided tour and our guide a young man was knowledgeable and funny. The training session is extra so we didn’t pay for that part and we were rebuffed at the training area but didn’t know what it was as we just wanted a look around. Most areas have a no public not allowed notice so difficult to see all parts. The 4 out of 5 is quite high but these stars are for the horses and our guide. Don’t bother with the restaurant just outside as we waited ages to be served so ended up leaving.

So to me, the attraction of our visit was seeing the horses in action, either by seeing a training session or a performance. We had arranged 5 days in the area, and the website said no training or performances Monday, but the rest of the week there would be one or the other.
Not wanting to screw things up, on Tuesday I phoned. Oh, the website is incorrect I was told. This week, training on Thursday and Saturday, performance on Sunday. So we planned for our visit on Thursday.
On arrival at the ticked booth we were told; no performances or training today, nothing in October. But we phoned to confirm we said. Impossible the lady replied. You could use a photo of this lady as a dictionary definition of indifference. It was basically tough luck.
So as not to waste the journey we bought the tour anyway. At the start of it they told us this week there would be training on Friday and performances Friday and Sunday. Accurate? Who knows; all our travel plans were committed for the remainder of the week.
The tour itself was OK, but I could see stables at home, and while the horses look to be fine specimens, not being a horse person much, how am I to know? Same for the museum; as add on to the main attraction they are fine but not a reason to come here. They also did a workshop, where one of the trainers brought out a horse and described some finer points. All good things, but they can’t make up for not seeing the horses in action in my book.
These guys need to up their game. I get that you change your schedule in slow times, but boy, you need to make sure you communicate, and in this internet age, on your website is how you do that.

Hello,
I visited the farm this week. The farm was very impressive and of course the horses were magnificent. But my visit left me with a bitter taste. I'm not a young person and my friend has difficulties walking. We were very surprised to find that there are no solutions for this category of visitors, like a small electric cart or a mobility scooter or even a wheelchair. It's a pity because the entry fee is substantial enough to cover such cases, which I'm sure aren't too many.
We couldn't enjoy our visit because of this and left with a heavy heart.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the farm. The Lipizzaners were amazing. We were able to view a practice session. It was very interesting. I wish only it was allowed to take photos. We visited the Riding Hall, Stables, Museum, Hippodrome and Chapel. It’s quite a complex and was well worth the time.

We went out of our way to see these beautiful white horses but were thoroughly disappointed as we had not done our homework. There were no performances and could only look at them from a distance. We had to do a tour with a guide that looked and sounded like a true Communist. She even wore this horrendous uniform. Her information was learned off rote, she had no personality and it was obvious that she was bored with her job. There was a visit to a rather interesting museum on the premises but we were given only 10 minutes but we had to be accompanied.
I thought that she would whip me when we asked for more time. This was an expensive waste of time and money visit. If the stud farm advertises a performance and you are in the area, go by all means but my suggestion is to see them in Vienna or in a proper theatrical venue somewhere else. This place is heavily promoted but it was the biggest disappointment of our 6 week trip to Europe.Spend more time at Postojna Caves or go to Predjama Castle, they are amazing..........

Cordiali saluti

Hello, we are going to the Lipica horse farm in May, my question is related to the show. Is the show only on certain days and time? Do we need to get tickets in advance? Do the horses actually dance? Sounds amazing. Thanks.
Written 17 February 2018
Yes it is advisable to get the tickets in advance. The horses do dance they do a wicket tango and quick step, and not mentioning the fox trot.
