About
At an altitude of 1611 metres, the mountain pass at Vrsic is the highest in the eastern Julian Alps and provides a natural link between the Savska and the Soska valleys. You may wish to have a relaxing cup of coffee or even stay the night at the Ticarjev mountain hut, which is located at the top of the pass. There are five mountain huts on Vrsic offering you rest and refreshment. Just off the main road winding up Vrsic, at an altitude of around 1200 metres rests the Russian chapel. Whilst ascending Vrsic, you can admire the natural rock-carved face of the lovely maiden Ajdovska deklica and a natural rock-window created in the face of the Prisank mountain.

When coming from Austria, the village of Kranjska Gora is the gateway to the road up to Vrsic pass. It's narrow, full of hairpins and oncoming drivers. But what a view! from the bottom to the top there is scenery all around. Massive walls of dolomite tower above you as you climb towards the pass. Stop when you can, take photos and enjoy this. The road can be busy in summer but on a sunday in Feb, traffic was light and we could concentrate on the view. I highly recommend this road trip and finish it off like we did, with a pizza in Tarvisio.

We drove this in June and it was beautiful. We stopped at a few places along the way. The driving was slow because of 50 hairpin turns. It’s not for a beginner driver, but it wasn’t too bad and there were posts, sort of like guardrails in some places.

Great drive up and great drive down. Take your time and pay attention, and don’t worry, there are plenty of stops along the way. Nice history concerning the Russian POW’s who built this road. Gorgeous scenery, but take a guide book so you’ll know where to pullover and what to see. Not to be missed.

The road is easy to drive on - wide enough for two cars, good quality road surface, barriers and was quiet in September. Not hair raising at all. Fantastic views. Easy parking at this time of year. Don’t miss the Russian Cross (corner 3) and Russian Chapel (corner 8). Lots of portaloos on the way.

If you are in the Julian Alps or Soča/Isonzo Valley, make sure that you also drive on the Vršič Pass as it connects regions of Gorenjska (Upper Carniola) and Primorska (Slovene Littoral) and it is the longest and the highest mountain pass in Slovenia, with the average incline of around 7,25 %. Drive is memorable (not higher as 1611 meters on the end, but with great views around) and fun. It unites nature beauties of Slovene Julian Alps (the highest mountain range in Slovenia) and some history as there are memories in the middle of the pass to the "Julian Alps discoverer" Julius Kugy with his memorial (from Trenta side) and Battles of Isonzo when many Russian captives built the road before snowslide buried them (therefore, it was made Russian Chapel for them on the Kranjska Gora side of the pass which also Putin visited a week ago). At the beginning of the pass you can see a very nice Lake Jasna from the Kranjska Gora side and nice rapid Soča/Isonzo emerald river from the Trenta side. There are some places in the middle of the pass when you can stop with a car for a while, there are also total of 50 bends along the way (which on the Kranjska Gora side are still covered with cubes on the road, meanwhile on the Trenta side it is all covered only by (relatively new) asphalt. When you reach the top of the pass, you can park your car/bike/motorcycle and go hikings on the hiking mountain paths as many of the most famous Julian peaks (Triglav, Prisank, Škrlatica, Jalovec) are near the pass.
In the winter, the pass is many times closed (or drivable only with additional chains on tyres), especially in the case of snow. Therefore, I recommend that you drive and visit it in the summer, late spring or early autumn. After you drive the pass, you have some nice attractions on the both sides. On the Trenta Side you can visit Bovec (with rafting on Soča or see Kanin mountain with renewed cable car), Most na Soči (with memorable boat Lucija cruise), famos historic train viaduct of Bača pri Modreju or Tolmin (if you are metal fan for Metal Days or Narnia fan since it was shooting of one fime there), more far there are also Škocjan Cave, Predjama Castle and great coastal city of Piran. On the Kranjska Gora side, you can go to the famous Planica Valley (known because of ski jumping and flying), Podkoren - Kranjska Gora World Cup ski slope, Slovene hiking museum in Mojstrana, more far there are also Bled and Bohinj Lake with great views of them on the Vogel ski resort and Bled Castle.
For conclusion, it is much to do in the Slovenian Alps (it is also safer in the summer as in many European cities as terrorists are not attacking people in mountains and small countries like Slovenia, it is cheaper in money as in the other Alps) and Vršič Pass is surely one of the must-do things if you are there to have some great memories. Enjoy the ride and good luck.

What a drive! Set off from Bled (@ 45/50 mins away.) Hairpin turn after hairpin turn punctuated by some stunning views....we were out of the car more than in it seemed as every turn had incredible views. Stopped at the Russian chapel @ turn 8 or 9, as well as several other places including the obligatory stop at the top @ 1611m. Down the other side to Trenta & back to Bled via Tarvisio in Italy & Kranska Gora. Well worth it!

The pass across the mountains is quite dangerous; there were not many cars but a lot of motobikes. The view is stunning but you have to be very carrefull because the road has sometimes holes in it, in some parts were under reconstruction so inhad to literally go off road and it is pretty tight also. It is worth to take it if you are not in rush, have enough gasoline and dont need to go to the restroom (you cannot even park along the road for the most of it).

Having read about this amazing road on Dangerous Roads .org I thought it was something not to miss. I can confirm the drive up this mountain pass is breathtakingly beautiful. Having read Dangerousroads.org article on here I left early in the morning of Friday the 26th December 2014 from Kranska Hora for the summit.
Taking in spectacular views of the Triglav mountain range to my left I carefully manovered the cobble hairpin in my Peugeot hire car. There are several viewpoint cafes at various points.
The Vršič Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 1,611 m (5,285 ft) above the sea level, located across the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia. The cobbles road to the summit is the highest road in the country.
The road to reach the summit is known as Ruska cesta ("Russian Road"), renamed in July 2006 to honor the Russian prisoners of war that were forced to build it. The mountain road from Kranjska Gora (810m) across Vrisic (1,611m) to Log v Trenti (620m) spans 24 kilometres of 50 hairpin bends, 24 on the Kraniska Gora side and 26 on the Trenta side of the pass. Each turn is numbered.

The 50 hairpin curves may sound challenging - and if you meet f.ex a bus, they are - but the route is easy enough for a regular car. There are some very steep places, where you need to take care. Keep an eye for approaching buses, since when they turn the hairpin, they need ALL the space. So, give them ample room to maneuver.
There is a very nice little cafe on the right side of the road, when you are driving up from Kranjska Gora. Very tasty (home-made?) ice cream.
The views are simply stunning. In a busy summer day, the parkings may be quite full, but usually you can find a place quite easily. The highest point is a good starting place for hikes, where you can experience higher mountains without going very far (this comes in handy if you travel with small children and elderly people). There is a restaurant and a small souvenir shop, too.
It is also a very good place for travellers with dogs. Dogs are allowed in the Triglav national park, but you must keep them on a lead. Remember to bring water with you, since it can be quite hot during the hottest summer weeks, even up here on the mountain.

We recommend the hikes to Visoki Mavrinc and Slemenova Spica. We spent 4 days in the Julian Alps and the Slemenova Spica hike was our favorite.

VISIT THE ŠUPCA VIEWPOINT ON THE TRENTA SIDE
From Vršič Pass, continue your drive to the Trenta Valley. But just across from the pass is another beautiful viewpoint where you must stop: the Šupca viewpoint is the final major viewpoint on the drive.

We r a family of 8 includes 60 yr olds 30 yr old and an infant .i want to show my parents the vrsic pass n soca river. And take some walks. Is it ok to drive park somewhere and hike a loop? Any suggestions where to park? And which trails to take?
Written 12 August 2015
Your question has been answered very well, but I wanted to add that as you have young and old in your group, you should always ask a local or someone walking in the other direction about how easy the path is. Some are much more difficult than others! Many of the locals speak very good English and they are all very friendly.
